I can't be the only one that appreciates your replies. It's very nice of you to take the time to answer our questions. I do hope things are okay in the marina. London is just awful at the moment, autumn doesn't look so good in the city and the COVID restrictions seem more petty than effective. Riding along beside the canal is just lovely
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stephen, nice of you to say, I do try and respond to all but it is becoming increasingly difficult. All is fine in the marina thanks, I'm sorry to hear it's not so good in London. The restrictions are getting too complicated, especially where tiers adjoin each other in towns/villages. Very difficult for many people. Cheers, take good care of yourself.

I enjoyed seeing what the weather is like there, at this time of year. It is much more enjoyable than where I live (the leaves have been gone for a few weeks and snow is on the ground). I also got to learn a lot about British roadways (I looked up motorways vs double carriageways vs single carriage ways). Very educational entertainment. Thanks.

I'm glad you enjoyed watching, another viewer was also asking about dual carriageways and motorways, so I'm pleased there is interest in the road trip videos. Weather wise, I expect we'll be joining you eventually, not sure whether there will be any snow where I am, that's still a couple of months away, if at all. All the best Alan, cheers.

Enjoy your allowing us to peek into your life. I thought your van ride was turned around by some magic in your camera recorder. You were driving on the wrong side of the van. But when you turned the camera around to the on-coming traffic I saw you were driving on the wrong side of the road! The oncoming truck was on the wrong side of the road and luckily you missed him!!! Back to you and you were not shook up a bit!! ....I crushed the remote before I remembered....y'all drive on the wrong side of the road....or we (US) drive on the wrong side. We drive on different sides of the road. Wheeew! If I could ever visit your beautiful country, there is on thing for sure--i could never drive a car there. So so different. You were so calm. Ha! Gday Alan I think the wooden brush is better than the plastic. In regards to the video the best habit is to drop everything off the card. You can't change the numbers so format the card each time you've copied to keep them in order. I copy rather than cut so if something doesn't work you still have the files then when I'm happy I've got it all I put the card in the camera then format the card.
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin. It's very rare that I would format a card. I don't understand why you would do it. I copy across to my computer and back up to an external hard drive, so I always have two copies until the time the finished product is produced and eventually the computer data will be erased. I keep a lot of data on the cards and there's no way I would delete any of it until I needed the space. The only issue is the peculiar GoPro numbering system, which is badly thought out. Sometimes I do need to empty that card, it just depends what film I've taken. I think formatting the card might lead to the numbering sequence starting again, which would be a very dangerous practice for me. Many thanks for your thoughts. Cheers
@journeymanadventure4 жыл бұрын
@@MyNarrowboatVenture Alan, I got into the habit a few years ago when working as an adventureguide. Partly because when your doing diffrant groups it is easy to get them mixed up. So I'd drop one groups files into a folder then format the card so I know it's clean for the next job. I also worked on a couple of films where it's standard procedure to drop the files at the end of the day, format the card and charge batteries so we're ready to go. I've also talked with tech guys who say when you copy files there is still background content that can cause card corruption issues. It doesn't hurt the card so I guess it's like fully cleaning the fridge before restocking. My folders are named for each film then I use separate folders within that are dated so I can stay in sequence. For you formatting should help with the numbering.
@janicegilliland62534 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, I'm not technical so I don't always understand some of your repairs or fixes, but I do enjoy the scenery on the canals or roads. I did a week long narrow boat cruise a few years ago with my sister, and we still talk about how much we enjoyed it and want to do it again. Best wishes.

@@janicegilliland6253 Hi Janice, thanks so much for commenting and supporting my channel. I'm glad you enjoy watching my cruising videos and hope it's not long before you get the chance to have another cruise yourself. All the very best Alan
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
@@journeymanadventure Sorry for the delay, I knew I had to reply further but couldn't find your comment and by chance I now have. I keep a folder for each day's filming in the same way you do. When you re-format a card the numbering sequence starts again, believe me that causes big problems for me. The reason is that when I'm editing, I will often use film clips taken on other days, so for ease, will copy clips from one folder to another, if the numbers are the same that causes problems. I've also had issues where the numbering sequence starts again at 10,000. This is because some photos are grouped by topic and not by date, so you could have photos in the same folder taken years apart. Cheers

Road trip, yay!! Thanks for your well wishes, Alan. Over here in the States we're experiencing a spike in cases. Where I am in North Carolina in-school classes haven't restarted from the summer recess and it's putting a lot of strain on families with parents who both work. I enjoy watching your vlogs and I actually prefer this type of varied content. I follow a few narrowboaters and sometimes the content can get very 'samey' watching bushes go by, but you mix things up enough so that doesn't happen. Good work.

Hi Alan, great swans, you know they eat duck food, apparently they cant eat bread as it chokes their insides. I got told that when I was doing it. I watched a swan choke on bread but it started drinking water and it went down. Loved the road trip, as you said we get to see some of the UK. Take care 💙🙋♀️
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Hi Katelyn, sorry but I thought I answered this message a few days ago (or maybe I answered one like it). It has just appeared (again?). Some years back, the public were told not to feed bread to the swans. The result was that the swans went hungry. It is important that the bread isn't stale, as that will cause problems. If you follow this link, you'll understand why feeding bread is actually acceptable. www.theswansanctuary.org.uk/cause/official-statement-bread-queens-swan-marker/ Hope that explains. All the best Alan x

@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
@@KatelynsAdventures707 Hi Kate, thanks for both your messages. A very different approach, especially regarding angel-wing. All the bread offered must be eaten and it mustn't be stale, at least that's what's said over here. I recall that after the alert some years back not to feed bread to swans, there was concern that they weren't eating enough, so it was said you can feed them bread, if you have nothing else suitable. Swans are often found in areas where humans congregate, so presumably they adjust to a diet of bread.

My Narrowboat Venture hi Alan, yes I’ve always feed bread to them until recently when one swan was trying hard to swallow it and 2 people nearby told me off for feeding them it. They reckoned you feed them duck food, but then when we were kids we always went to the pond and feed the ducks left over bread. Guess we just do what our own country’s tell us to do. Our swans gravitate to people as well I think for food.

Thank u Alan that was very interesting 😀 when u opened the first package as u took the contents out l shouted "shaving brush" then thought what do u want with one of those lol😂😂, l had no idea u could get companion brush replacements. Please for give me for being nosey but at the beginning when u were talking in ur boat what was that multi coloured thing behind ur head by the side of the microwave it had a few pegs on it? My eyes were fixed on it ahaha.
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Simon, glad you enjoyed the video. So many have now said they thought it was a shaving brush! Good question about the multi coloured thing. All I can say is it' seems to be made from recycled materials and is probably intended as a rug but I use it to hide the side of the microwave. All the best, take care.

Great vlog Alan, loved the road trip bit, wow what a fab life you have a Narrowboat and a Motorhome will you winterise the Motorhome or do you use it alot over the winter months, have you done a vlog tour of your Motorhome we could look back on or would you consider doing one. Oh how I love to see your vlogs when not expecting one and has the WAZE ever took you down roads not really any good for your Motorhome as a caravanner I might look into that. Well Take Care Keep Safe And All The Very Best To You Alan.
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, I use the camper as my regular vehicle, so it won't be winterised. I haven't done a vlog on the camper though others have asked. It is something I'll consider. I've not had any problems with WAZE like you suggest though I was surprised some months back, when it didn't realise a main road was closed due to a sink hole appearing and then it wasn't aware of road works in Exeter, all on the same day. It would be helpful to be able to programme in height and width, as it has tried to take me down roads with width restrictions. All the best, take care Alan

what video camera do you use and how long does it run and what storage chip or is it direct to a lap top. I ask a lot but if you don't ask!.
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, my main camera is the Sony AX53. I'm not sure off hand how long that runs for because my filming with it is sporadic and I've never had an issue. I also use a GoPro at the bow, which runs for over 2 hours. I record to SD cards or micro cards. I have various of different capacities. All the best Alan

Well I have to rethink the idea about my sister.When she saw my last comment about the tiller she said "I didn't know he had a garden?!" So if I mention a weed hatch she will ask if you have a plow! By the way, I am cuter and smarter but married. Oh well.

Nice vlog Alan, how often do you get out in the motorhome? Enjoyed the road trip happy to see more of the area if you are moored up for the winter. Here in France waiting for announcement from Macron tonight putting us in to full lockdown again. Sad times.
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks Graham. I haven't used the camper, as a camper very much, as with all the Covid issues I've not been far this year. Also, boat cruising is much cheaper. I note you now have another lockdown from Friday and as you say it is all very sad. Hope you manage to cope alright. Cheers

What is the difference between a carriageway and a motorway? Display humbug. No clue.😄. Accident was probably a poor tourist overwhelmed by roundabout.
@MyNarrowboatVenture4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynn. It’s to do with speed limits and the number of lanes. Dual carriageways have two lanes in each direction, motorways tend to have three and a hard shoulder. All that is changing, as some motorways now have four lanes, no hard shoulder and safety refuges. These are quite controversial, as there have been fatalities due to the lack of a hard shoulder. There are also restrictions as to what vehicles can travel on motorways and at what speed. Some motorways have two lanes. Brief but hope that helps. All the best Alan
