@Gamer3427 Жыл бұрын
It mostly comes down to the cost vs profit aspect. They could invest more money into proper lock design, and charge a bit more as a result, but they probably just care about keeping it in the price range that an average "buyer" would think it was worth while. Most average buyers won't bother to check about pick resistance, but might look up information about the rest of the design and how long it lasts. So long as it sounds good on paper, that's enough for the average consumer. Spending more to make it better wouldn't benefit the company, financially, and companies tend to not care about their consumers. Particularly since most people might only replace their locks once or twice over the years, (if that often depending on where they live), so repeat customers aren't too important.

There's two reasons for the random buttons before entering the code. One is the wear pattern/fingerprints you mentioned. The other is that if it's outside, rain might sometimes trigger the touchpad. You don't want the rain entering codes at random - especially if your lock starts giving delays after a few failed attempts.

A third reason is that it makes it harder to identify the code from a distance by observing the relative positions of the visible key presses. If you're unfamiliar with this lock type, the extra randomness before each actual code will make analysis messier unless you watch several code entries.

I spent 30 years in the home and commercial security field. I can count on one hand the number of locks picked to gain entry into a structure. There are too many faster ways that garner less attention. Now, Locks on things IN the structure need to be secure and difficult to get through. The cabinet needs to meet the locks ability. Trailer kingpin and coupler locks need to be good to work effectively. Far and away, the MOST common entry was to kick in the front door. One noise. Entry gained and the door closed before anyone can look out and see what happened.

My front door would take far longer to kick down than it would to pick the lock. It also helps that we have a aluminium screen door between it and the outside which would need to be pulled outwards which would make far more racket than any thief would want to cause (just closing the screen too hard makes a racket loud enough to hear down the street during the daytime lol). I think the most common method of break ins around here is forcing or smashing a window with the hopes that no one will notice the breaking glass noise.

Precisely why it's worth spending a few bucks to "armor" your doorframe and door. Pretty much nothing short of a bulldozer can get through our door - it would be easier to demolish the wall beside it.
@MaethorDerien Жыл бұрын
Exactly, the reason pick resistance doesn't matter is because it is literally never used to gain entry. Now bump and jiggle keys and lock guns are more common but as long as your lock is good against those pick resistance isn't an issue. People don't realize that often the front door isn't even the main method of entry. They typically target the back door, garage, windows, etc. That is why I put up cameras because a visible camera is probably the best deterrent you can have. The second they see the camera they are going to target a different house.

In fact, as a follow-up video, it might be interesting to look at all the electronic locks in your collection that were good enough on the build quality that just need a new core (and the ones where you CAN actually replace it). Case in Point: Yale's electronic deadbolt (with Zigbee or ZWave integration for home automation) has an "okay" mechanism, lasts a few years of daily use, but the key-bypass core is CRAP. If all else fails use the doggie door. I am still looking for or working on building a fully automatic insulated doggie door. Like a real door that slides open like the ones at the store, just much shorter. Depending on the set up one can just force the door open. i want to install about a 2.5x2 opening with either motion sensor or rfid on the collars and it is easy to train my dogs to use the door. He has one right now. The one I installed was built by me. The one that I had installed was pure junk. This one has held up for a couple of years. It needs a rebuild out of plastic along with some rubber o rings and magnets and a 2nd set of doors. To help keep the wind down. When he goes out he pushing a flap. When he comes out he pushes the same flap that pushes another flap with a hole in it. This double door helps to keep the wind out. I want to re make it with some type of plastic sheets and using a router I can cut out a o ring seal and then route down areas for magnets and steel pucks to keep it tight against the door. The magnets that I use now are strong yet because it was made out of plywood it does warp a bit. I have even thought about going to a friends shop and making it out of 1x4s and run them in to the planer and build the hole thing right there so that it all I have to do is come home and screw it on. All painted and sealed up.

I could never understand people leaving a key "hidden" somewhere outside. I'd rather learn how to pick my own locks and do that to get in. Also no one gets a copy like some people give one to a neighbor for example. My thinking is that if it's an actual emergency then the fire department can get in by whatever means they need to. I'm not going to make it even easier for other people to get in discretely (meaning not having to break a window for example).

Another way to avoid getting broken into is not leaving your garage door opener remote visible in your car. It should be hidden the the glovebox. A thief will see the remote clipped to your visor, break into your car, steal it. They will also steal your proof of insurance papers, because it has your address. Yes, this really does happen.

In corporate buildings with combination locks at every door, the combination doesn't trigger the bolt directly. All door locks are networked to a central security computer. When the employee want to enter the room, the combo is sent to the central computer, which autenticate the request and send a signal over the Ethernet to the door lock and open the door. This way is possible to authorise every person to a different set of rooms, and to know which employee entered what room without video surveillance. Now, having mechanical backups in this corporate scenario is a choice for each company, but every security consultant will advice against. As shown by LPL, the backup entry is usually the weak link in the security chain. Thank you for the video LPL! Greetings, Anthony

As long as a bump key or jiggler can't open it easily, it is good enough to stop most. Can you use a magnet to make the mechanism trip? Few burglars are going to go to the time and effort to learn to pick locks. The question is: how good is the construction to withstand being kicked in or jimmied with a large screw driver. You can always take it to a lock smith and get security pins installed if you are worried. Most lock smiths don't even pick if you call them to open a door when you've locked the keys inside. They just drill it and make you buy a new lock.

I always say, look around, if you don't see bars on people's windows, crime is probably statistically so unlikely as to be not worth worrying too much beyond not putting a key under your welcome mat. If you do see bars, ask around to find out what sorts of criminals you might need to be concerned with. High skilled pickers are unlikely to be thieves, but low-skill attacks like bumping and raking are common in some areas.

I was burgled by someone using a bump key - I only worked that out when I ended up on this channel by accident after looking for information on locks. I was ignorant - I didn't realise my locks (cheapest of the cheap 25 years ago) were easy to bump. After seeing LPL in action did I buy expensive locks? Absolutely not. I bought a better lock - one resistant to the common attacks. And slightly better than what everyone else on the street has. But not an extravagant 'I have expensive stuff to protect' lock. I now know an ex professional burglar. I asked about entry methods - he said.....unlocked doors, open windows (he was a slim build and quite athletic) and then brute force - kicks to flimsy doors and bricks through windows. No tools, no skill and maximum speed. Bumping/snapping is high end or for areas where brute force attacks no longer work - lock picking is for show offs or diamond thieves.

@@pd4165 Every burgler has their favorite methods based on where they are, what has worked in the past. Bumping is very common if you live in an area where the two burglars both bump locks. Burgling is not a high % profession. Less than 1 / 1000 people could try to make a go of it. So you have to be aware of what's happening specifically to your neighborhood. Some neighborhoods have no bump / raker thieves. Some have no crowbar thieves.

how do you know which lishi tool to use for any given lock? is it just a matter of memorization?
@mxspokes Жыл бұрын
It's a matter of just looking at the keys, Kwikset and Schlage have different bows and are the most common keyways in the US. This is a Kwikset Bow, so you would try the most common lishi tool for Kwikset, which is the KW1 shown here.

Maybe manufacturers should make the lock body, but leave the lock cylinder to a different market to fill. That way, an otherwise good lock will not be compromised in more ways than one.

Please may I say that I’m not sure I agree with your implication that pick resistance is equal to build quality. I live in the UK, and break-ins are as common as anywhere. The police regularly give advice on home security and especially locks but I have NEVER heard of picking being an issue. Your excellent and entertaining channel demonstrates the art of lock picking, and you are mega-skilful at that but, over here anyway, break-ins are down to brute force, drilling, snapping etc. Whilst I agree that pick resistance is nice, I would buy a lock that had build quality over pick resistance any day. In addition to picking the lock, which you smashed, I’d quite like to see you crack it using brute force (like everyone else) before you judge the lock.

@LockPickingLawyer aside from visual aesthetics from the picking resistance, if you were to rekey and re-pin it, what are your thoughts? Is there a glaring error with the electronics? (I live in a mobile home, I ain't buying it, I'm just curious)

Maybe the physical part could be replaced for something better? Seems silly for such an expensive lock, true. But if the other stuff is good, a means to upgrade the weak point would at least look good on them.

Another reason for random digits can be for the heat signature. Decent IR can see which numbers on a pad were last pressed, provided someone just used it.

If you're buying the Amazon Basics lock, you don't have anything valuable enough to attract someone who can afford to and knows how to use IR.

Something like this is better inside a house not securing one. At that point the level of security it offers is perfectly fine. But the question would be why? At the end of the day this is just not engineered for real life. You can get better security for less investment.

There is one lock I'd love to see you try to pick... Unfortunately it's not sold to civilians.... I only know about it because I went to school on a u.s. military base in South Korea So the school had these locks... They were a right pain in the ass to open with the correct key... But I guess that's the price they paid to make it pickproof... At minimum you would Need a new lock picking tool that doesn't exist.... Simply due to the unorthodox nature of the key

Do you think if rekeying the lock with better pins would make it a better lock or do you think it has other vulnerabilities that can be taken advantage of if pick resistance was better?
@TysonJensen Жыл бұрын
Given that it has an anti-bump feature, I'd want to see if it also resist raking, and to see how it does against a simple brute force attack. The point of a deadbolt is to force the attacker to really work at it, but I fear a simple hammer to that front plate and you could probably open it with a screwdriver. Or not. No way to know other than to take it apart and see what's actually in there. If the only way in is high skilled picking attacks, well, the FBI is unlikely to be stealing my stuff anyway.
@thelockpickingspoon9074 Жыл бұрын

Why not randomize the location of the numbers on the pad? It’s expensive enough to have a screen that supports it. I wouldn’t buy on for the annoyance factor alone.
