I remember these times all too well. I lived right at the next stop heading into the BX. 3rd Avenue -149 St. Stayed at my great grandmother's house, I had a good view watching these Redbirds make their way out of the ground. Memories...

Ah the trains of my youth, I lived in the Bronx for the first 11 years of my life near the Burke Ave (2) train station and I used to ride the Redbirds all the time! The front window was no doubt the best. I like the R142s of today but the Redbirds, man I miss those quite a bit.

The redbirds were seriously on their last legs though. They also didn't have functioning during the summer time. I know because I was there riding the 2, 4 and 5 trains daily. LOL!!!

Love this stop! The 5 makes a lot of noise leaving and entering the station via the Grand Concourse Curve whereas the 2 leaves and enters swiftly in both directions.

Yeah. Never liked the R142s. I do like the R142As and the 143s though. R142As fixed so many of the R142s issues. R160s on the other hand are just way too bland for me…

Thanks for your comments, DJKosmonaut. Yes, 149th St. is unique among all the NYCT subway stations and I was glad to get the opportunity to film it from the overpass. I got the video that day because there were workers doing work on the overpass and the gate was open for them, so I went up there and captured that moment in time.

Great video. That's one of the most interesting and at the same time most terrifying subway station of the NYCTA. The sound of Number 5 screeching up and down those curves is intense. How did you get up to the overpass? They closes that off back in the mid 80s. Anyway, thanks a million for that. Great it has the old Red Birds with the R142s.

By 1995 before and after graduating from High School l remember seeing sets of the R26/28/29 cars from the 2 train then switch over to the 5 train even when these cars start to fall apart they didn’t put any new welding but some did and freshly repainted them, there were like that since the overhaul program began since 1985 to 1987 to be graffiti free R33M of 1986 then by 1988 to 1991 freshly rebuilt by 207 St. overhaul shop then assign to the 5 train, by 1995 most cars assigned to the 2 line, 2 sets went on the 6 line and remaining sets assigned to the 4 as well too by 2001 to 2003 all Redbird cars that had retire too soon should have been remain for another 40 more years too!

I never rode the redbirds on the jughandle, but I'm sure the noise was unbearable, especially if the windows were open. Notice at 3:06 the rear rollsign said "Dyre Avenue" because it must have gone around the SF Loop so it was originally at the north end, and I guess the motorman had to change the sign at Eastchester on every weekend run. I noticed because they were mainlines, the internal lights stayed on because they were replaced in the 80s, but it's strange how the external lights blinked.

The elevators would have to be on the uptown tracks. I only point that out because the main entrance would be on the SW corner of 149 St. As the original headhouse-----Mott Avenue Station, had the escalators
