A few Appleseed Instructors have voiced their concern over the USGI M16 protective bags. I was just following the list of equipment instructions on the Appleseed website that literally says bring a trash bag or towel. I don't see how a trash bag is more safe than the USGI M16 bags but I always have regular trash bags in my truck if they are a requirement. Im not one to argue safety rules. I'm a stickler for it in my classes and I have instilled it into my boys. If they tell me not to use the USGI M16 bags, I won't use them. I wasn't concerned about getting the rifles dirty or wet. I was just following instructions. I selected the M16 bags because I had them and thought it would be neat.

Where I am no instructor would have a care. If the Wx is bad they would likely remark on your preparedness. I did a Winterseed earlier this year, single digits and snowing. Those who had covers (tarp pieces, blanket pieces, fleece towels) had drier and happier hands during drills & AQTs. I just fold my mat over my rifle and unfold it when a course of fire starts. Mid-Atlantic when it's 45 or colder, and humid or rain/sleet/snow, that's pretty raw and wet & cold hands are known for not listening to your brain's signals.

I built a dedicated .22LR upper and lower with the CCMG barrel and bolt as well. The Better Mag adapter allows use of the 15-22 mags so bolt hold open also works. I also used the Bore Buddy reliability kit, It’s been ultra reliable and I’m using it in practical rimfire matches and steel challenge.

I’m a Tippmann Arms guy, I’ve owned cmmg, S&W15/22, and settled on Tippmann. Manual of arms are identical to centerfire AR’s and magazines are smooth. They will take a lot of your AR parts. The customer service is awesome and very helpful. I ditched the 15/22 due to the out of battery detonations next to my kids face in two different guns that took S&W forever to own up too. Didn’t trust them anymore. Each to their own, Tippmann out of box ready to go!

The Tippmann s are good guns. I'm not going to discount your experience with the 15-22, but I will say this. All rimfire semi autos are dangerous. Any of them can and will fire out of battery. I can't count how many rimfire semis have blown up on me as a Gunsmith. Seen it with every brand. More with the 10/22 than any other brand. Fortunately when it happens it's usually not a big deal if people are wearing eye protection. It may blow out an extractor and damage the magazine.

The 15-22 is such an awesome trainer rifle. A new one that i picked up that i'm also highly impressed with is the Tippman Elite M4-22, the elite version of these gun uses all aluminum receivers, aluminum mlok handguard and aluminum buffer tube. They make it in 16" and 11" and some models have a stock folder on them too. I've put several hundred suppressed rounds through mine and i have only had a few stoppages. I also bought several more mags for it and those seem to run great too.

I have a number of police officers that have purchased Tippmann Arms M4-22 's for training. The Tippmann are mostly MIL-SPEC and easy to setup as your patrol or duty gun. Point being that LEO's and other agency's have a high degree of confidence in the M4-22 for it's reliability and ability to setup like a standard AR with minimal modifications.

I am an Appleseed instructor. You may have a problem with putting the rifle in those bags. While your rifle is on the line, the muzzle must be kept over the line while your body is kept behind it (until instructed otherwise). It's gonna be hard to hold that bag open and slide your rifle in without flagging your own hand or pulling your muzzle behind the line and flagging somebody else. When we have inclement weather, wr just usually fold the shooting mat over the gun until it's time to shoot (and I am in Wyoming, which is an old indian word meaning "bad weather") Last note - if your kids have good eyesight, they'll benefit more from using iron sights before they move on to scopes. Scopes can be a crutch when it comes to basic instruction, unless you have problems seeing the target. Good luck at your shoot, you'll have a great time.
@bbainter7880
@bbainter7880 Жыл бұрын
Edit to add - the instructor may ban the bag entirely, as it makes inspection of the rifle for clearing the line hard, maybe impossible. And once the line is declared safe, you can't touch the rifle again until told you can do so. If I was running the line, I wouldn't let you use them. No hard feelings, and with all due respect, but if you are really that worried about rain getting on the guns, lube them up well and clean them as soon as you get home. Even my wife's custom wood stocked 10-22, I lube all the metal and wax the stock and don't worry about weather too much.

@@bbainter7880 I sincerely appreciate the advice. The M16 plastic bags were more of a novelty thing, but if they don't work out it's ok. We do have shooting mats that will work as you described. Im not one to argue safety rules. I'm a stickler for it in my classes and I have instilled it into my boys. If they tell me not to use the bags I won't. I was just following the list of instructions on the Appleseed website that literally says bring a trash bag or towel. I don't see how a trash bag is more safe, but I always have some in my truck. I wasn't concerned about getting the rifles dirty or wet. I was just following instructions. I selected the M16 bags because I had them and thought it would be neat. I'm going by the list. I took a Project Appleseed class during the Patriot Day weekend this year. It was a very informative class, not only in history, but in the basics of shooting a rifle well. I generally think I'm a decent shot, and I went with an open mind, but the class was humbling and just showed me that I have much more to go on the journey of being a rifleman. It was a difficult time during the class, as it was outside and hot and I wasn't shooting well, but it's one of those experiences where you look back at it fondly at all the things you learned and experienced. If anyone has a chance to attend a Project Appleseed class, I would strongly suggest you do so. Whether you are, do come prepared for the weather.

This was great, Chad. You & your boys will have a great 2 days even if the weather is foul. If you haven't been to an Appleseed before, you should think about finding shorter magazines for the prone and seated/kneeling positions. Prone especially can be awkward with a 30rd. Black Dog Machine 10rd are perfect for prone & sitting. Appleseed's web info may say something about this, I don't remember. PS -- About your accurized 15-22s & the proof targets and the guy in the comments who asked about the CMMG conversion in a std 1/7 or 1/8 twist 5.56. Not a snowball's chance in hell that a 5.56 w/ CMMG conversion will send rounds in such tight clusters. Most folks struggle to make their AR shoot that well with ammo appropriate for its bore and twist rate.

Sean, Thank you for the advice. I did purchase nine, 10 round mags for the event. I figured the 25 rounders would be a problem. I like USGI 20 rounders when I'm shooting my centerfire AR's because they don't protrude as much. That gives us 3 magazines per person. Think we need more?
@seanoneil277
@seanoneil277 Жыл бұрын
@@SchooloftheAmericanRifle You are welcome, I'm glad to repay some of the wisdom-sharing you've done for me. 3 mags of 10rd per person I think is fine for the transition stages / seated / prone. You can use std length mags for the standing stages/drills. I haven't seen a .22LR AR pattern magazine failure at any of the shoots I've gone to, but I have seen 10/22 rotary box mags get bunged up at Steel Challenge matches. The Black Dog mags are reliable, though, in my experience, and I would not go crazy with redundancy if I used those. Some folks talk about obsessively pre-cleaning .22LR ammo (remove mfr wax/lube) and then lightly oiling each round before loading into magazines, to keep the paraffin out of the magazine. I think if you're not using Armscor (the waxiest of them all) on a below-freezing day, you'll be fine.

I’m SO pissed off that I got my Granddaughter an M&P22 braced PISTOL for Christmas. It fits her perfectly and she absolutely loves it and has put close to 3k rounds through it but NOW the ATF wants to make her a “felon”! I hope that the new brace rule is overthrown so that my Granddaughter and all the other young kids learning to shoot with braced .22 pistols can stay out of prison!

Loved this video!!! That is one of my favorite 22’s. That is what I’m teaching my 6 year old daughter to shoot with and she has a lot of fun with it. I’d love to get that charging handle because I too wanted the radian and ran into the same problem. I even contacted them to see if they happened to have one anywhere but no luck. Where did you find your charging handle? Excellent rifles and excellent video. God bless American!

The Tippmann M4-22 does blow the 15-22 out of the water. Comments I get from customers who have owned both are 'The 15-22 feels like a toy compared to the M4-22, and the M4-22 is much more reliable'.

I would like to have your opinion about bedding a volquartsen carbon fiber barrel in a 15-22 receiver. What formula of loctite or similar would you use if I wanted the ability to remove it to deep clean on rare occasion. since on this set up high heat cannot be used bc of materials barrel and upper are made of.

Would you recommend the S&W 15-22 over a CMMG conversion bolt? Which one is more reliable? Mil Spec bolt and parts?
@SchooloftheAmericanRifle
@SchooloftheAmericanRifle Жыл бұрын
I would suggest a dedicated .22 upper over a conversion bolt. Conversions can block the gas system and cause the gun to blow if too much lead fouls the bore before cleaning. I still prefer the 15-22 over a dedicated upper.
@seanoneil277

CMMG conversion bolt in your regular 5.56 rifle will work but the accuracy is not good. For .22LR at least 1/11 twist (if you have a really old 5.56 barrel) and better 1/12 or 1/16 twist gives better accuracy/stability. It's less relevant at 25 yds than at 50+ but it's still not optimal. I've shot Rifleman w/ a T/CR 22 and with a dedicated .22LR upper on std AR lower. Between the two I tried a CMMG conversion kit and didn't like the accuracy. The CMMG bolt you get with the conversion kit is just like what you'd use with dedicated .22LR barrel, except you swap the collar. The .22LR collar is not too expensive. So you could try the conversion kit and then use the bolt, + swapped collar, for a dedicated .22LR upper. The S&W 15-22 will be far more accurate than a CMMG conversion in a 5.56 barrel with 1/7 or 1/8 twist. Either way the fundamentals you learn will be great. But to see how things really get optimized as your fundamentals improve, start with an accurate rifle. So either build a .22LR upper or buy the S&W. Or buy a 10/22. And figure out what ammo your rifle likes, from among what you can get locally (or quick enough online), so you improve your chances of seeing what your skills improvements are. I find Norma Tac-22 very reliable and pretty darned accurate. Eley Target also. But your rifle might like something else, plenty like CCI Mini-Mag. Be sure to keep your rifle clean. You'll be surprised how quickly the soot and wax/lube will build up when you're buzzing through drills on day 1 and AQTs on day 2. Also, I don't know about local to anyone else but where I am you can certainly use 5.56/.223 in your regular AR-15 for Appleseed. It's louder, and a lot more expensive ammo-wise. And a little harder than with .22LR when the times are tight -- like courses 2 and 3 of the AQT. Chad knows more than I do about the Q of Mil Spec and .22LR. AFAIK, the Ciener/Atchieson (what CMMG patterns its bolt after) bolt was used by Army for AR-15 training when the barrels were 1/11 twist. But Ciener bolts are hard to find and I don't think mechanically any different from CMMG.

@@SchooloftheAmericanRifle I thought conversion bolts were used with both AR15 uppers and dedicated 22LR uppers with one part difference on the conversion kit between the two. Many recommend just firing a few .223 rounds at the end of the day to clean out the gas port after using a conversion kit. A 2nd reason that many recommend a dedicated 22LR upper is they find the groupings from an AR15 barrel to be not very good with 22LR at 100 yards. The groupings may be okay at 50 yards. I have a conversion kit but no dedicated 22LR upper but would like to assemble one myself someday. I did buy a 15-22 recently due to low price of 388 from Lanbo's before 75 rebate.

What’s the purpose of the rear sight under the LPVO? Since it can’t be used. Amazing video as always.
@kathyarmstrong649
@kathyarmstrong649 Жыл бұрын
If the optic fails then all you need to do is remove it with its mount, flip up the rear sight, and you're GTG. No rummaging around trying to find your rear sight.
@raykettel1837
@raykettel1837 Жыл бұрын
As Kathy stated, the rear sight along with the front sights are backup sights in case the optic fails. I think many use a quick disconnect mounts for optics so they can be quickly be removed if they fail. I think I heard in this video that QD mounts were not used. The QD mounts typically cost more and weigh more so some do not use them. In some competitions one may remove their optic during the competition if it fails but may not add one so having a backup sight installed, even if blocked by optic, can be useful to have pre-installed and sighted. This may be an option for 3 Gun. I don't know anything about Appleseed rules. I assume one may be able to pull out a tool to remove an optic during a competition so QD may not be needed. In a defensive situation one may not have the time to find and use a tool to remove a failed optic. Some like to use an offset open sight as a backup without the need to remove a failed optic. Some in 3 Gun use offset red dot rather than dial their LVPO down to 1X.
