I bet everyone involved with Scandal has it especially horrible because they performed one of the most iconic 80s songs (The Warrior) yet the rest of their only album and the band itself is so obscure the song is more commonly misattributed to Pat Benatar than them So they don't even get credit for their one hit wonder

Definition of One Hit Wonders from Wikipedia: "A one-hit wonder is any entity that achieves mainstream popularity, often for only one piece of work, and becomes known among the general public solely for that momentary success." This doesn't mean they didn't have other hits or weren't great bands. This only means that if you go up to 50 random people, most of them will only know one song from these bands.

It’s like half of these bands came straight outta a college dorm basement, dudes who could play a little, accidentally came up with a catchy hook one night while “riffing “, laid it down on a cheap 4 track bought at a garage sale somewhere in Yuma, got the college radio station to start spinning it, and got lucky a producer was on campus to see their daughters swim meet, heard it, bought it, milked the shit out of it for a couple years in commercials and back end movie soundtracks, and than you can buy it in the dollar bin at Walmart, a vicious cycle to be sure.

Not everyone gets to reap the benefits of a full music career. If you as the musician understand your place in the industry, you can milk it too, and leave with some grace. A single perfect radio song can be enough to retire alone. Be in a band for a few years to fuel funding for some side projects, or just a straight up college career in something else. Way too many garage bands don't even get that opportunity, and fail before they made their money, and have to start over.

There is a fundamental fatal flaw in this list. The description states "A one hit wonder breaks the Top 40(ish) of the mainstream chart only once, with their career generally overshadowed by that one track" First, that is NOT the generally accepted definition of a "one-hit wonder" in the US. It is a Top 40 hit on the HOT100 chart, not the Mainstream chart. These are different charts that Billboard puts out. In fact there are at least two different "Mainstream" charts Billboard does, one for Pop and one for Rock. Second, If you are going to use only the Mainstream Rock chart, Semisonic had THREE top 40s, Lit had FOUR, Spacehog had FOUR, The Vapors did only have one but it WAS NOT Turning Japanese (Jimmie Jones), Kix had TWO, Toadies had FOUR, CTD had none on this chart, Marcy Playground had TWO, Drowning Pool had SIXTEEN on this chart, AAF had THREE and Blind Melon had THREE. If Loudwire meant a Top40 on the Hot100, then Hum, Lit and Drowning Pool should not be on the list at all since they had a total of ZERO Top40s on the Hot 100 chart. If they meant the Mainstream Pop chart, then only Fountains of Wayne would be eligible. If they really meant the Hot 100, you can add Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin (as a solo) to the list. Both only ever had one song in the Top 40 on the Hot 100; All Along the Watchtower and Me and Bobby McGee (Janis did have a Top 40 with Big Brother with Piece of My Heart and just missed two other solo cuts making the Top 40, Kozmic Blues and Cry Baby)

That's generally my concern with "ONE HIT WONDER!!!" stuff. Like sure, Harden My Heart is the only song people really remember by Quarterflash, but they also had Find Another Fool in the top 20 (#16 on the US Billboard Hot 100), but it didn't have any staying power (which is a shame...not many songs have dueling sax and violin solos). You kinda have to be a bit pedantic with it, especially with the "classic rock" era (like Hendrix) because they sold a fuckton of albums with a single Top 40 song ever (and Black Sabbath and Judas Priest not even having that).

True. I got that particular album (blow my fuse) because I found them on google suggestions for probably AC/DC or something. I read a couple words on them and thought yeah sounds like your kinda music but didn’t expect much cuz I hadn’t really heard about them at the time. In all honesty that album is now one of my favorite albums, at least of 80s hard rock / heavy metal / glam metal type music. Don’t consider them a 1 hit wonder either to be honest. I don’t think Don‘t close your eyes is a huge deal and then again other songs like Blow my Fuse and Cold blood (which is one of my absolute favorite songs) aren’t too far behind in my opinion. Also, Lit wasn't a one-hit wonder. They had 3 hits (My Own Worst Enemy, Zip-Lock and Miserable). And Miserable was actually the most popular of the three songs. It had the video with Pamela Anderson and was one of the top-10 most played songs of the year 2000. And the album went platinum. Annnnnnd Alien Ant Farm's biggest hit was "Movies." Not Smooth Criminal. And again, not a one-hit wonder if they had two hits.

actually, as played as it was, in terms of the hot 100, miserable went to the 'bubbling under' portion of the charts, #117. zip-lock failed to chart, my own worst enemy went to #51, so there is some legitimacy to that one. alien ant farm only made the hot 100/top 40 once in the mainstream, which is where this list is going, only making the hot 100 once or top 40 pop charts once. movies, albeit a played song on mainstream and modern rock charts and stations everywhere, didn't even cross over to the pop charts, hence why smooth criminal is on there.

One could argue Fountains of Wayne had it's first hit in 1997 with "Sink to the Bottom" that hit #7 in Norway Lit had "Miserable" chart at #3 and "Lipstick and Bruises" at #10 Crash Test Dummies first charted at #4 in Canada back in 1991 with "Superman's Song", following the release of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm", they hit #6, 7, 4, 2, and 5 with "Swimming in Your Ocean", "Afternoons & Coffeespoons", "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead", "He Liked to Feel It", and "Keep a Lid on Things" respectively. But again only in Canada Marcy Playground also hit #8 with their previous single "Saint Joe on the School Bus" Drowning Pool charted several times after Bodies, hitting #7, 5, 4, and 8 with "Step Up", "37 Stitches", "Feel Like I Do", and "Turn So Cold" respectively. Alien Ant Farm hit #5 with "Movies" in the UK and "Glow" in New Zealand following their success with "Smooth Criminal". Blind Melon reached #8 with "Galaxies" the lead single from their second album "Soup". Unfortunately, vocalist Shannon Hoon died 5 month later from a drug overdoes following a disappointing performance in Houston, halting the tour and causing the band to break up until their reformation in 2006. They are currently recording their 4th full-length album with an expected 2020 release. It's debatable if Iron Butterfly even qualifies for being a one hit wonder as they didn't even break into the top 20 on the charts but the song "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" has been used so much in media to represent the 60s/70s I can see why it's on the list.
