Regardless of opinion, nu metal was the last time that heavy music was mainstream and reached millions of people. Bands like Korn and Linkin Park were gateway band to heavier music for countless fans. EDIT: Wow, thanks for the 10k likes everyone! Nice to see how my little comment generated a robust discussion! 😁

In all fairness, most of these interviews are from the early 2000's, a time when being catty, petty and close minded as hell was "the culture". Nu metal was really hated at the time too, it was "the other" for a lot of genres (pop, punk, metal) and speaking of it positively was rare and almost rebellious. I wouldn't be surprised if most of these musicians had grown out of that mentality by now.

Butthurt would only apply if it was actually a "competition". I don't like the growling, I'm an old school metal guy, as far as singing is concerned. I don't see competition from something I'm not interested in to begin with, they certainly are not competing with anything that I would listen to. There also seems to be plenty of room for everyones taste these days with technology, nobody is really " competing" to get a record deal with a label anymore, I record all the instruments myself in my garage with a computer, from drums and guitars to vocals and percussion, no labels, no paying for studio time or engineers. It's a different world for musicians than the one I grew up in (42 years old). Opinions are like smelly buttholes, we all have them and everyone else thinks they stink😋.

Seeing Linkin Park and Korn really incorporate those elements where cold to me. The genre introduced me to the likes of Deftones, Coal Chamber, Static X, System of a Down and Slipknot I do agree with Tom Morello with the aspect of how some bands in the sub genre basically put this misogynistic, frat-esque aspect, however, I feel that post-Grunge did that way more and way worse.. I feel they basically singled out Limp Bizkit there.

It's incredible how sour they are about a band that never took themselves seriously and happened to have bangers that millions of people enjoyed, the stuck up mentality that defies of what rock was, they hate limp biskit cause they sang about parties and "going crazy" when they had other themes in their lyrics, but still if they only had the "rollin" lyrics, rock always had this "party" vibe, hell how much classic rock songs talk about partying all night or getting wasted? People forgot glam rock, even since the 60s there we're light hearted and party rock songs and nobody flinched, it seems they hate that a band that have members that don't hate themselves or their parents and were succesfull without becoming depressed f*cks after that (like most of the people talking s*it in The vídeo)

I've never thought of them as belonging to a certain genre. To me really great music isn't concerned with fitting into a particular style. The style arises from what you're trying to express.

When I was a kid, I uses to be scared of Metal music, like a hell lot. My uncle/godfather is your typical old school metalhead and I was scared of him and what he listened (Krator, Slayer, Metallica, etc), that whenever I was forced to visit him, I would grab his cassette tapes and hide them. As years passed and I was getting more acquainted with music channels (MTV, VH1, among others), I got into bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed and, of course, Linkin Park. However, I never paid close attention to the "Metal" side of things but that of the rapping vocals. To this day, nonetheless, I think this music genre we all know as "Nu Metal" might have deeply (and unconsciously) helped me to overcome the irrational fear I had towards Metal in general. Currently I listen to Prog rock/Metal and jazz and its derivations (particularly jazz fusion), but I'm also open to a wide variety of other metal genres and music styles in general. With that said, I can't hate on Nu Metal at all, and will honestly never understand the hatred it gets. To me, I guess, it is all a matter of attachment and not knowing how to let go that is getting others to hate on it. But what do I know. Love music. Music is not supposed to divide but unify us all.

Tom Morello: We never considered our self to have anything to do with Nu Metal.. Yeah. that's because you don't have anything to do with it. Also is funny how he is so in love with himself, talking shit about everyone else, and literally the next video is Corey taylor saying the same thing but with respect and just praising everyone. Because he is right, Slipknot is not nu metal.

Since always lol. Most green day songs sound exactly the same. They're annoying imo. And compare that to bands like slipknot and Linkin Park who have done a lot more with their abilities, I think green day is the one who's shit.

Tbh I never really listened to much Nu Metal, it just wasn't really my style. But I still think Nu Metal is a great idea, rap mixed with metal is genius for the time since rap was so popular then and mixing it with rock helped rock still be somewhat popular a bit longer. I find it a great way to keep rock alive, sadly even that isn't as popular anymore but hey, at least we had a cool idea that kept it around for a bit.

Nu metal is more of a period in time than an actual genre, so to that end, Corey makes a good point about Slipknot's affiliation.

This is probably the most true statement i have heard on the "Genre". Lile "Grunge" (I hate that word), it is usually a catch-all for a time or place. nyone who thinks that Soundgarden should be in the same genre as Pearl Jam, just doesn't know musical theory, per se. Just cultures/scenes. (And I am not dissing any band here. But when I hear grunge, I hear Mudhoney, and maybe Bleach era Nirvana. But I have heard that they can easily be called sludge rock, ect.)

What a load of bullshit. Both grunge and nu metal can easily be clearly defined in terms of musical characteristics. Musically, grunge is a style of alternative rock generally characterized by loud, distorted, “sludgy” electric guitars, angsty, introspective lyrics, and an often raspy vocal delivery. Nu metal is an aggressive form of Alternative Metal with an emphasis on rhythm, using elements of Funk Metal and Hip Hop to create a cleaner, more groove-oriented sound. It doesn’t mean all of these bands sound the same. Alice In Chains used lots of metal elements in their music, while Nirvana experimented more with punk aspects and even some noise rock at times, but overall they can definitely both be called grunge. Unless you are using bullshit pseudo-genres like “new wave of American heavy metal”, “NWOBHM”, or “first wave black metal” most music genres can easily be differentiated by one another.

@@vincenzoaureo6060 Yeah, but you're overlooking the simple fact that all so-called "sub-genres" of rock and metal are stupid. Everytime a band comes out with even the slightest modicum of originality (and I'm using the term original very liberally here) and the another band comes out about the same time and kinda sounds a little similar, another sub-genre sprouts up. It's a long running meme at this point.
