You have to balance "doing extra" with "being taken advantage of." There are many jobs that are willing to work you into an early grave, and soon as you get injured they find an excuse to get rid of you.

The first point really depends on companies WANTING employees to grow, along with their wages. That is a very Disney like concept…that companies value hard workers. I’ve only seen friends of managers move up, even over the actually qualified ones. When you become too valuable to a company, they can’t afford to replace you, so they move others up the ladder so they can continue milking your work. I’d say a job deserves maybe a year or two tops before you get your answer, grab all the experience you can but don’t throw away your entire life for incompetent management and a full time wage that doesn’t even pay the basic bills

Your ability to work is a finite resource. You should work to invest. Your money will work 24/7 for you and is infinitely scalable. Your ability is not and will diminish as you age.

Hard work is not always appreciated, specially in large companies where corporate politics and “networking” are more important than merit and hard work. If you are in that situation, give 200% looking for a new job. If anything, give more than 100% to yourself by taking advantage of all the benefits and resources your current employer offers to get trained and then leave.

You also have to be able to recognize when your efforts are in vain. For example: A horse and buggy maker once the model T was invented. or Mike Wazowski when he was trying to be scary. There are times when you need to pivot to something else, because someone is better than you, and is growing faster than you, and you cannot keep up. Some people are natural sales people, others are natural at analytics. Find your niche.

The majority of people do not want to work hard. They feel that they deserve to be handed everything and would just rather complain. When you're an adult, don't expect to get babied. Get out there and put in the work.

I am successfully retired. Don't do too much free work for your boss. It will not be appreciated. Good video, though.
@sarahreynolds14306 ай бұрын
To all of those who say “don’t do too much free work” or “hard work isn’t always appreciated” or “depends on the company” etc isn’t really getting the point. Rich Dad Poor Dad also makes the same point. You do the extra work so you as an individual can learn, grow, advance your own skills, etc so that the RIGHT people will recognize it at the RIGHT place/time or the RIGHT ideas will come to you on how to improve your financial situation! My sister volunteered to work on a committee she wasn’t assigned to bc she valued the mission. Later that year she was awarded $10k in company stocks and a special award! You can’t predict where the benefits from “free” work will come in but the principle is true: be willing to work for free and it will pay in the end in some way, shape, or form!

To your first point, counter argument: If you work in a job environment where there is no room for growth, I dont think you should work harder or try and stand out of the pack. I work for a very large well known tech company, been here 8+ years and they have openly said there is no growth in the area I am in, they said this right when the pandemic hit and since then I have of course been looking for something else where I could grow but here? Now? No, I will do absolute bare minimum of me because my mental health and sanity are already broken beyond repair. So, I have to humbly disagree, you shouldnt burn yourself out working for a company that will never do anything with you.
