tip - I keep a 5' pry bar or piece of pipe with my attachments for making minor adjustments if the attachment does not line up just right or the lift arms do not want to come off the pins easily, especially useful if not using a quick hitch. the bar provides leverage to lift something up a little or move it side to side a inch or two.

I picked up the same one. Instead of putting bushings on all of my implements, I found a couple pieces of pipe with an ID of 3/4”for the top and 7/8” for the bottom. I cut the pipe in half lengthwise and then in half the same width of the hooks and welded them into the bottom of the hooks like shims/saddles so when the standard pin lays in the bottom it mates up firmly. It works perfect. Seemed to make more sense to modify one part instead of several others.

Some quick hitches out there have a flat bar that pins in above the hook and then pins to the top of the 3pt for situations like your finish mower. If you can find a fabrication shop in your area, they could probably fix you right up. I have 2 quick hitches. A Harbor Freight QH on the old Farmall C and a Farm Hand by Lee on the Kubota M5660. The HF QH has been in use for about 6 years and has functioned very well after I made a few "adjustments". First one was the top hook situation. I welded a block on the backside and re-drilled the holes so that the hook projects out from the QH frame by 3/4"-1"...can't recall at this time how wide I made the block. This made all the difference in the world and I see that Ken's Bolt On Hooks now offers an aftermarket top hook for the HFQH. I also replaced the bolts that hold the top hook with quick pins. The second situation that I discovered just last year is that the lower pins supplied with the HFQH are too small. By this I mean that they are less than 7/8" diameter which is the CAT I standard. I believe that they measured 20mm (0.787") so they were sloppy in the swivelly balls on the draft arms. To correct this, I bought a new set of CAT I lower pins from Blain's Farm and Fleet and then modified them to fit into some new tabs that I made from flat stock with a bend in them to wrap around the QH frame just like the original ones. Next, I drilled out the holes in the QH to 29/32". Reassembled everything and no more sloppy fit. The Farm Hand by Lee is bullet proof right out of the box and will fit a CAT I or II tractor, has an extended top hook with quick pins, has a welded on 5/16" grab hook on each side, and 3 Reese Hitch sockets welded on that you can affix bale spears or any number of things limited only by your imagination. It came with a box full of pins and bushings and the fork type attachment for use with implements such as your finish mower with the floating top connection. Made in the USA for $687. As you discovered, bushings are necessary for the lower pins to fit properly in the QH. SpeeCo now makes a QH with lower hooks that fit 7/8" pins directly with no bushings required so it can save you a bunch of money in bushings if you have several CAT I implements. I am a machinist so all my bushings I make myself and are FREE.

My first experience with the quick attach was the old Farmall 300 2 pt. hitch row crop tractor. I didn't check out the quick attach because I just assumed all my old equipment wouldn't work with it. When I finally broke down and replaced my old Ford 6600 with a Kubota 3901 and got tired of fighting the equipment to hook it up by myself I finally got the tape measure out. I got lucky and realized my assumptions were wrong and the few pieces of equipment that I have would work. I bought a used quick attach for $200 and used bolts on the bottom links and double nutted them. It turns out I could have bought a new quick attach at the place where I bought the tractor for around $30 more that came with the bottom pins. Oh well, at least I also didn't have to pay taxes on the used one.

That Harbor Freight upper hook is a well known problem, but it can be overcome if you want a cheap quick hitch. There are hooks on the market that also fix it. What is puzzling is this has been a problem with the HF quick hitch now for years and you would think they would modify the hook. But there are ways to get around the hook problem without spending money.

Hi, I have a B1550 Kubota and I have a rototiller that hooks very similar to yours. I don't have a quick hitch and you are 100% right, it is terrible to hook up. A problem that I think I might have is that my lower arms on the Kubota won't "spread" very wide and will have to do some measuring to see if this would work for my machine. This is a great video and you did a good job showing and explaining the quick hitch and how it works. Thanks, J.R.

Thank you so much for your quick hitch experience. I'm having the same issues. I probably over paid for mine. I ordered my hitch when i purchased the tractor from the dealership. I never thought about picking up an extension for the PTO. I use the my hitch on some of my implements but for my older implements the driveshafts are 8"-10" to short. Your video fixes my problems. New subscriber "here" thank you very much.

Could you weld a spacer on the top hook and extend it out the 3/4 of a inch? You would just have to redrill some holes.

Thank you. I’ve heard of some modifications like this. You can also buy a better top hook on Amazon.

Of course that’s all negated if you have a subframe backhoe attached? Still, worth the investment at more than three times less…it’ll work just fine!! Great video!

When I bought my tractor, I had the QH added on because I knew I wouldn't be able to hitch the implements up, otherwise. As long as I get it lined up properly, it falls right into place.

They also have a lot more products you may be able to use like lower pins and cat 2 @ 3 collars for hitch...

Thanks for the informative video. I was looking at the quick attach hitches and was thinking of the Harbor Freight unit as it was much cheaper than the other name brands. I see that the hitches are all pretty much the same design and your demo helped me make up my mind. I just subscribed and really like your style of presentation.

Thank you, Stan. I hope HF modifed the top hook. That's really the only problem I've had with it. You can get a replacement top hook from boltonhooks.com if you need. Much appreciated. -Ed

Quick hitch is nice, but since I have a concrete floor and all of my attachments are under a roof, I put all of my equipment on dollies. Makes it easy to attach without a quick hitch.

That’s smart, and helpful!

Can you offer a source for the Dollie’s that you use for your attachments. Furniture Dollie’s maybe? Thank you in advance!

Tim, I got lucky and found out that a local manufacturing company was selling some of their on floor carts. They are 30 inches by 48 inches and have 8 inch casters. I found mine by going to the factories and just asking. They are all square steel tubing and with a few changes they work well. I have about 15 of them and did not pay more than $10 a piece.

Just came across your channel and subsequently subscribed. Some interesting info on there as I have been considering buying a sub compact tractor. I am on just shy of 3 acres so not sure if I really need one rather than just want one. Anyway, I enjoyed learning from you learning. Greeting from Scotland by the way. Thanks again, keep up the good work.

Thank you for your kind comments. I think you need a compact or subcompact tractor 😉 Glad to welcome you! -Ed
