Dont underestimate the Dutch. It's a super common thing to do for us. And we do this so often, that accidents can happen. But that's EXTREMELY rare. This type of accident is maybe our first in history from all other jobs we've done, worldwide. The Dutch are #1 in maritime jobs and heavy lifting, such as these things.

A backdraft or flash over is not happening because the low smoldering fire gets fresh oxygen and flares up. When a fire is deprived of enough oxygen to produce flames, it's going into an incomplete burn, where it is producing carbon monoxide instead of carbon dioxide. In contrast to CO2, CO is highly combustible. I essence, you build up a highly combustible gas while there is not enough oxygen to light it up and then put in some oxygen to do exactly that. It does not only look like a gas explosion, it IS a gas explosion, but not butane or propane but CO. CO is also lighter than air and will accumulate on the top of the room. That is why your best bet is to crawl through a fire. If you walk without a mask and a tank, you will collapse after a few steps due to CO intoxication (and several other unhealthy things inside a house fire smoke). That is also the reason why you can have a flash over, which is the ignition of the CO that crawled its way out of an oxygen deprived room, accumulating along the ceiling when you give it access to a flame. Since this can happen unbeknownst to you, you can easily be trapped by the fire that crept above you and then ignites stuff behind you, trapping you between a burning room and...another burning room. Soo.. today you learned, that CO is not only dangerous because it will suffocate you quickly and has no smell or color, but also that it can burn and explode. It's not a very nice molecule for humans^^

AGREED about the 1st failure. The pontoon barges could not have POSSIBLY maintained sufficient stability for the movement. That was apparent early in the process as the barges "BOUNCED." As soon as the cranes started to move the weight toward the center of the canal, they were DOOMED.

These crane operations… what the heck!! I never ventured into studying engineering BUT even I knew that two cranes on a barge is just insane = doomed to fail. Also, have they ever heard of counter balancing or NOT sitting the crane on an EDGE lifting something super heavy… especially an edge that isn’t 100% solid, smh. What a difficult mess to clean up. QUESTION: How do they even “clean up” or “upright” a fallen crane? Do they just use more cranes to pick up each fallen crane?

As an arborist I always suggest to people that they get a small to medium size chainsaw because having too much power from a large saw can often led people to think they can do something they cant. This is a scenario im constantly exposed to in my field of work.On one project, the rigging study was failed EIGHT times, before it was approved for implementation,..,because of the weight to be lifted...the restricted space between"live"equipment and piping...PLUS the tailing and transfer of the entire load to another overhead crane, winch and turning the 44ton load 180 degree to be installed base down.Perfect job by all accounts, executed by "master-class"riggers.So very important to plan correctly ;..check and recheck...then check AGAIN before proceeding.
