Some people have a tendency to ignore the Shiba Inu pros and cons that exist and wind up taking on a dog that they’re not prepared for.
Don’t get me wrong, with how cute and cuddly they look as a puppy as well as an adult, it isn’t a hard thing to overlook.
But it happens, and the dog’s nature isn’t addressed throughout its youth and during Shiba Inu training, and before you know it, the dog is either in charge or relocated.

We had a Shiba for almost 16 years. They are very much a cat/dog. She would lay on the back of the sofa and look out the window. Ours wouldn’t let us hold her but she was always close to me. She would be laying at my feet or curled up behind my legs if I was napping on the sofa. They are like husky’s in personality. They are part of the pack but independent and very smart. Our girl would go over to our sliding door and scratch at it to be let’s outside. She came up with it on her own. I was her person and if I was gone for more than a couple of days she would kind of shut down. My husband would call me and say he is worried and wanted to take her to the veterinarian. The second I got home she was jumping up and down mouthing my hand and giving me the biggest Shiba smile while wiggling her tushy. I tried not to travel much after we figured out she got depressed when I was gone. She was extremely loyal to people she considered part of her pack. If she didn’t like someone I knew to be weary of them. I miss her every day.

Shibas also love arbitrarily deciding that they don't like doing something they've always loved or vice versa and get mad if you don't magically know whatever they've suddenly decided is good/bad.
@dogbreedsFAQ
@dogbreedsFAQ Жыл бұрын
It's true that Shibas can sometimes have a strong sense of independence and can be stubborn at times. They may also exhibit sudden changes in behavior or preferences, which can be challenging for their owners. However, with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement training, many Shibas can learn to adapt to new situations and become more responsive to their owners. It's important to approach training with a positive attitude and to be willing to adapt your methods as needed to suit your dog's individual needs and temperament. With time and effort, you can develop a strong bond with your Shiba and help them become a well-behaved and happy companion.

Shiba Inus are a very elegant and intelligent breed of dogs, look like a teddy, clever like a fox. But they can be stubborn and have a cat like personality to easily ignore you if it is not to their best interest, which is usually food. There are not too keen on petting or cuddling, very aloof about cuddles, and shed a lot, but they are super clean and easily potty trained...but not really for first time dog owners.

Why not for first time dog owners?
@joshuadecarlo6217
@joshuadecarlo6217 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m curious about that as well, what makes them not good for first time dog owners? I mean as long as you clean and take care of them like other dogs, it seems fine. Their cat like personality is fine if your not expecting a super cuddly dog. As an owner of a bunch of cats, as long as you consistently give them attention and recognition, they’ll warm up to you and may or may not become more cuddly. As long as you don’t have the wrong expectations, they seem fine for first time dog owners

We are Shiba Inu Rescue of Florida. YES Shibas are absolutely adorable and although bias we feel the BEST EVER dogs... but NO not the dog for everyone. We rehome many for the mere reason people get in over their heads and dont know what to do with this primitive breed. Shibas aren't your standard dog. In the beginning they require a lot of hands on preferably exp dog handling experience. However, when the proper work patience and love is put in they make amazingly loyal and loving dogs. We wish people would research and be honest if the Shiba Inu is the right fit dog for their home, family and lifestyle. If you feel you have what it takes then ENJOY!! You have the worlds BEST INU!! This is all spot on. We have a Shiba and we love, love, love her. She's smart AF but also doesn't give AF in terms of traditional motivations, she will only do something if she wants (Because of this she also in no terms can be off leash which is a bummer). The one thing I'd say that I've experienced differently is that my dog is actually very affectionate/cuddly but likes her alone time too which I appreciate (she's not clingy). She's also a weirdo and dramatic (and very judgmental). The shedding is the worst part (she sheds more than my husky/german shepherd did). Overall though Shibas are great dogs but they are certainly not for the faint of heart (not good first dogs, training them is very difficult so you have to know what you are doing).

Sometimes he wants me to chase him or when he feels like he will listen to the “come here” command, last resource I have to pretend like I’m leaving for him to get close to me and I can finally put him on the leash. Our Shiba Buster is awesome, he’s about 2.5 years old now. He can be mouthy when he wants to play or if we are not doing what he wants. His puppy training wasn’t normal or completed due to weirdo Covid restrictions and lockdowns, but overall he is very well mannered for a Shiba. We have a pet rabbit and he is very nice to her, so no issues. He actually loves people and getting pets. He does go off and take naps alone, but will sleep on our bed and hang out with us all the time. He is stubborn, but don’t let the “cons” scare you away from this breed. They are all individuals and some are cuddlier than others.

Shine’s need to run. You will need a fenced yard with NO spaces for her to escape. They are also little Houdini’s. I don’t know how, but ours has managed to shake herself with just the right ‘frequency’ that the leash comes unclasped. I now always walk her with 2 leashes, one on her collar and the other on her body harness. She doesn’t like water and will refuse to walk through a small puddle. And yes, they are the biggest drama queens you will ever see. When we wash the dirt off her paws, she screams like we are breaking her legs, though I guess that’s just part of her charm.

Super easy to train when it came to tricks, but harder to potty train for some reason. So he's a bit backwards compared to most shiba. I have a shiba inu (she’s 6 years old now) and omg she is so dramatic. I swear she reacts like people. And you can tell when a tantrum is brewing. But she’s so cute and they really are loyal. She doesn’t mind cuddles and isn’t even protective over her bones (although that might be through training because I used to and sometimes still do literally hold her bone for her while she chews it because I spoil her and it makes it easier for her to chew). Either way if you can make it past the first year (definitely the hardest) I totally recommend them.

I have about an 11 month shiba, tsumi, right now. My biggest advice would to start training early and also just push through them. I hate to say this but I genuinely hated tsumi until she was about 5 months old just because you need to be more responsible w shibas. They take more time and effort not bc they aren’t smart but building a bond while simultaneously trying to make them listen to you is hard and overwhelming.

I want one! So bad! No dog can possibly be as stubborn as my boerboel. He was the most stubborn and spoiled dog there was. Did what he wanted when he wanted, would black mail for treats by stealing tissues and ripping them up and if you ate in front of him he would scream and bark his head off. He was such a loveable and gentle boy. I miss him very much. He lived to 14

It sounds like your Boerboel had quite the personality, full of charm and clever antics! 🐾💖 "Those special quirks surely made every day an adventure. It's clear he was much more than just a pet; he was a beloved member of your family. Cherishing those memories is a beautiful way to keep his spirit alive. 🌟 If you're thinking about bringing a new furry friend into your life, it might just lead to more unforgettable moments. Who knows, they might even inherit a bit of that legendary stubbornness and charisma! 🐕✨ If you ever feel like sharing more stories or finding a community that appreciates the unique personalities of our furry companions, our channel is filled with tales of love and laughter. We'd be thrilled to welcome you! ❤️🐶"

To be honest, Shiba is my motivation to get my first pet. I am more likely "either Shiba either no pet" :D I am soon moving to my own apartment and would like to know from people here if that would still be a good idea to get a Shiba. Again, I did my research on so many different breads and to me Shiba would be the best choice. Still, saw some people commenting that it is not an ideal first dog but still would like to get one. Maybe there is a way to get educated/experienced beforehand without owning a dog?

hey man, first time shiba holder here who livess in an appartment. Having no troubles at all! you hear a lot but reality is, you really dont need any experience in my opinion to own a Shiba Inu. Over time you will learn everything about your shiba. Mine is now 1.5 year and owning one has been the best decision of my life, a shiba brings soo much joy in my life! Mine is very independence and could sit at the balkony for hours lol good luck though!

I'm fostering a Shiba right now. Being her first real home (spent 6 years in a breeding facility), she not only craves a lot of attention and confirmation but In fact she demands it 😂. She is constantly trying to get my attention by stealing and chewing on the stuff she very well knows she's not supposed to chew on. Often on walks, she just decided that she doesn't want to walk anymore. It's amazing how complacent and confident she has become in my apartment after just a couple of weeks, the little queen 😂. Must remain patient, and only give her attention for desired behaviour and yes, sometimes they can be confrontational, especially if they have learned that it works, so never give in!.

It's amazing how resilient they are, and it's wonderful to hear that she's adapting and finding her confidence in her new environment. It sounds like you're doing a fantastic job, especially with the patience and consistency needed. Kudos to you for fostering and giving her a chance at a loving home after such a challenging past. The journey with her will surely be filled with memorable moments. Keep up the great work, and hats off to the both of you! 🐶👑❤️

For the most part fairly accurate but one of the biggest con is that they can be runners due to the high prey drive and independence. I've had 5 Shibas over the last 25 years and only one could i trust to not run out door left open, the others were never off leash.

It sounds like you have a delightful pack with your two Shibas and hound dog! The bond and friendship they share must bring so much joy and entertainment to your household. It's not uncommon for dogs to become very excited and "bonkers" when a member of their pack returns after being away, even for a short time. The enthusiasm and happiness they display are a testament to the strong bond they share and the love they have for each other. Observing their reactions and the way they express their excitement can be a heartwarming experience. It's amazing how dogs can make us feel so loved and missed, even after a brief absence. Treasure these joyful moments and continue to foster a harmonious and loving environment for your furry friends. Their friendship and playful interactions undoubtedly bring so much happiness into your lives. If you have any more stories or thoughts to share, I'm here to listen!

So what you're saying is that there are no actual cons. Some of us consider independence a pro, and a penchant for drama simply funny and charming. High quality breeds are expensive as well, so there's no difference there to many other breeds as well.
@birte8896
@birte8896 2 жыл бұрын
There sure are cons, they are very very stubborn which makes them hard to train (especially when it’s your first dog). I often see Shibas who have to be rehomed because they have behavioral problems. Mine was very social towards other dogs but unfortunately he got attacked and now he’s scared and starts barking at every dog he sees. I’ve been working on it for a year now but he’s very stubborn and there is A LOT of work on it. But other than that they are the best dogs, they have so much character it’s so funny lol.
@birte8896
@birte8896 2 жыл бұрын
Oh also a con he didn’t mention, I have never seen a Shiba who can be off leash. They literally run for their lives if they get the chance lmao. When they are outside, their hunting instincts kick in and they don’t listen to their recall (mine literally acts like he doesn’t know his name anymore lol). Or when your front door is open they often will be very quick and make an escape. They also are escape artists in the garden, they can jump surprisingly high or will dig under the fence. I’ve seen some people online who did succeed to train their Shiba to be off leash tho but not many

Haha, it sounds like you have some interesting experiences with your Shiba's off-leash adventures! It's true that every dog is unique and has its own personality and characteristics, and it can take time and training to find what works best for each individual dog. It's great that you have been able to find ways to manage your Shiba's escape artist tendencies and keep them safe. It's always important to prioritize the safety and well-being of our pets and make sure they are properly supervised and contained. Keep up the good work with your furry friend!

Shibas: 1. They are hunters and will run away - must be leashed 2. Once they trust you - they are yours forever (never betray them) 3. Independent like a cat. 4. Easily trained with firm consistency. 5. Like a 2 y/o child. That matures to 5 y/o child. 6. Intelligent: Needs mental and physical exceecise 7. Best in pairs ( get 2 if you can). 8. Great security: They only bark when there is a reason. Quiet bark when at a distance, but aggressive bark when close. May growl or snap, but not known to bite. (Gentle bite while playing) Very unique breed.

Our Shiba Inu is 4 years old, we brought her back from Japan after 10 years living in, Ours is a registered and purebred but you have to be careful buying one that has been inbred, Usually I can tell if they have defects like a dented tail that will not curl out straight. Ours looks more fox like, she is red with a bushy tail tipped with gray fur, beautiful dog and was very easy to train and understand both Japanese and English. She can say out very clearly when she wants to go out. Stubborn yes but so lovable when taken proper care of. fussy about her food as she grew up eating dog food but loved her maguro tuna sushi. We brought her to the USA when she was turning 4, she how is training her little sister a blue Healer who now acts more like a shiba inu than a healer. fun to watch them play and fun to see big sister teach her little sister play and mind her manners or gets a stern warning like a father would teach the young.

So many new Shiba Inu videos lately... My Shiba is 2,5 yo and all that is said in the video is true when it comes to him. The most important thing to know is that Shiba personality is a mix of high intelligence, extraordinary sense of independence and always sticking to their own ideas. I've been taking care of Siamese cats for a really long time now and looking to get a Shiba somewhere down the line (I want to be confident with my research first before deciding). My question is, how prepared am I to look after a Shiba dog considering my extensive experience looking after cats? I imagine some aspects of looking after them are transferrable.

But my Shiba just turned one and has been THE most well behaved Shiba puppy people have seen apparently. Just have to stick to your guns and not deviate from what you, as the owner want. My son said the same thing about his Shiba. He got some videos on training a dog. The house training was easy he said, also trained him not to chew on things pretty well, although he did chew on a few things he wasn't supposed to. He does suffer a little bit with separation anxiety but is getting better. He is a funny dog in that respect, he will run over to my front window and look out when someone leaves, then go sit by the door watching it. He does this a few times but then gives up and goes and lays down. He can be affectionate when he wants but also likes to be left alone. His name is Ollie, he's the cutest dog I've ever seen.

i saw a video where a teen girl commaned her male-shiba some tricks. But he looked very bored ,corner-cutting responds...No respect to the girl... Once the girl brought some treats, he noticed it, got motivation Powered on ! And then, He performed all tricks like an principal opera singer. What a ...good treat 😮

Years ago, I volunteered at a rescue kennel, where there was both a St. Bernard and a Shiba. You would think that the personality differences would put them off one another, one is a laid back breed and the other is sometimes a little firecracker of energy. But they were the best of friends, to the point where we actively tried to find them a home where they could live together (We managed to find one btw). Their difference in personality was a great benefit to both of them, the Shiba got the St. Bernard to become a more active and playful dog, and once the St. Bernard was truly tired, it got the Shiba to relax and tone it down a bit.

That's a lovely story, and it's great to hear about the bond between the St. Bernard and Shiba at the rescue kennel. It's true that dogs, like people, can form friendships and relationships that are based on mutual respect and understanding, regardless of their breed or personality. In fact, it's often the case that dogs with different personalities can complement each other, just as you described with the Shiba and St. Bernard. It's heartwarming to hear that the rescue kennel was able to find a loving home for the two dogs where they could continue to live together and support each other. It's a testament to the special bond that dogs can share, and to the important role that animal rescues and shelters play in helping dogs find their forever homes. Thank you for sharing this story! 🐶🐾

Mine did fine with cats, he knew them as a puppy tho. And it’s funny because when he shows love and I’m low enough he likes to push his head into my like a cat would.

Our Shiba has not hurt any of our 3 cats but she does play very rough with them. We've had to stop her from dragging them by their necks a few times when she was a puppy so she doesn't do it as often now but she'll still try to do it occasionally. And luckily the cats can all fend for themselves. Unlike the bunnies that hop into our yard. :( We moved a few months ago and there seems to be a lot of bunnies around here...there's at least 4 less bunnies now. :(

Hi Zainab! They need daily exercises. If you want a protective dog, go for the Akita Inu or GSD.
