Also, my dog is very good with Sign Language! She knows “outside” “potty” “eat” “drink” “sit” “no” etc . She also has made up her own signs to tell us that she has to go potty or that she needs something (stretching front legs for potty and biting the air *not barking* for follow) she never barks. (I am not deaf I just enjoy using sign because my parents are) 😁

IT'S NOT TOO LATE! look into counter conditioning and desensitization training. i got a rescue who was kept in her kennel all the time prior to coming to me. she was over excited around dogs and fearful of people to the point where walks were almost impossible. i got her in to training and after a lot of hard work, she got better. she wasn't perfect but she felt more comfortable. confidence is also important when they have those issues so teaching them nose work would also be extremely beneficial! exercise is probably most important! find a place that has minimal to no people around and tire your kid out! this can make training easier.

The native Japanese Spitz breeds including the Shiba Inu have very strong wolf-like instincts and behaviours. One of them is not liking eye contact. For dogs/wolves, looking directly into the eye means confrontation, so naturally they tend to avoid eye contact. This is why it is crucial to start training them as early as possible.

Regarding training a Shiba, you have to be assertive and consistent, and you also have to reward desired behavior rather than punishing bad behavior. The Shiba Inu's mindset is "what's in it for me?", and they won't do something if they don't see any point to it. But they learn extremely quickly when given an incentive.

I may have gotten lucky but my Kira (shiba inu) was very easy to train, praise is a huge part of it . Kira knows when she is good and wants to please our family, each of us and she demands interaction with us all daily. I have had many dogs in my life and I will say without hesitation that Kira is the smartest and possible the best mannered dog I have had the pleasure to live with. We get mobbed at the local pet store by all of the locals and workers that know her by name and just want to be with her even for a few minutes.

Michael Bancroft can I ask how she gets on with other dogs? My dream dog is a shiba inu. I’ve never lived without dogs, and I’ve always had males. (They’ve never been aggressive towards other dogs) But I would love a female shiba. I’ve researched the breed and read that females can be picky and ‘moody’ with other dogs. Can early socialisation prevent this?

@@Bea_678 she is actually very friendly with all animals so far and not dog aggressive. Please remember that dogs are like humans in that they develop personalities so no two will ever be alike. Kira is a female so she would be less likely to be as aggressive as a male.

They are amazing dogs - we have two, with the love and the headaches. That final scene with Jimmy on his back. His two canines are showing, and that means "I love you", or "I love what you are doing." Put ours on their back, rub the belly, or preferably the neck, a canine tooth, usually just one comes out. It's like a snake's fang. Unbelievably intelligent. Once a shibe sets its mind on getting or doing something, it will happen. It might not be immediate, but it will happen. As in, "there is butter on the table, I love butter, I will get butter." Shedding: HORRIBLE. You will get the equivalent of an extra shiba every 3-4 days, every 2-3 in the springtime. Get a good vacuum! We have a dyson, it keeps up, just barely. Absolute loyalty to 1 person. He or she will love every member of its pack, would easily kill for any member were they to be threatened, but loyalty belongs to only one person. Ellie commands me, demands I take her for her afternoon walk, but won't obey my commands the way she obey's my son's. Oh, you forgot the Shiba Scream, well documented on KZbin. Do something the shibe disapproves of, like giving it a bath (they hate water, won't go near it), you will hear a blood curdling scream that sounds like you were slowly twisting the dog's hind leg off and tearing it from it's body. They recover instantly. And finally, they all think they are cats.

Although the things you explained are spot-on, you (and most all-about-Shiba-Inu videos) failed to address a VERY important factor about this breed - that they can EASILY become AGGRESSIVE if you don't exercise and train them properly. These dogs don't nip you - they bite. Hard. Hard enough to draw blood. They mean business when they bite. The native Japanese Spitz breeds are VERY DOMINANT and need a good pack leader to keep them stable. These dogs were not bred to follow commands. They were bred to do as their instincts tell them. I like to describe them as "trainable wolves". Here in Japan, Shiba Inus are like the Pitbulls of USA. They cause the most serious biting incidents, the most given up by owners, and the most to be euthanised. In every dog shelter and rescue organisation you see lots of Shiba Inus. They are NOT for everyone, especially people who have not done enough research on dog psychology and proper training.

apartment is fine - lots of walks especially first two years, to build the concept of the apartment is the "den" where the tired dog rests. A yard actually can contribute to lazy owner not stimulating the dog enough - "s/he's in the yard, that's good enough" when really, the yard is too boring. Lots of walks.

We rescued our shiba in March and he is 3, we also live in an apartment with another much bigger dog. We walk 3-4 times a day and just encourage play time when he shows interest in it (the stubbornness means he only plays on his terms 😂). He is actually more attached to our other dog, than she is to him-but it took time to get there. I think with enough walks and dedication to play time they are actually great apartment dogs. Good luck on searching shelters, I hope you find the best companion ❤️

Our Shiba: 45 lb male Went to training during pandemic, not able to socialize due to silly policies Doesn’t like being leash walked, can chew through a harness in 2 seconds Very treat responsive Looks us in the eye a lot Loves to play Loves to do what he wants to do If you are looking to dominate a dog, do not get a Shiba Ours has a fenced yard and loves running around like a mad man Very easy to potty train Very intelligent He is food aggressive with other dogs, even though he was raised around another dog from a puppy He’s now a solo dog as his dog brother passed away at 15 years old Loves to Netflix and chill

Great video, shiba's are the best. I have a 8 month old and she's so funny. While they are fiercely independent it's my experience that if you spend the time to train them from early on and you have a lot of patience, they are just as trainable as other dogs.

pretty good insights. i lost my shiba from an accident as he was being walked by my brother in law. i remember when he would do weird things just like what Jimmy did on the end of the video. shibas are weird dogs but very fun and loving. i'm excited to get my shiba inu puppy when he's ready to go home! for those also getting shiba rescues, it's common for shiba rescues to be skiddish around people they don't know so please be patient with them. they will warm up to you within the month with proper exposure of letting them know you

Very good advice! I have 2 Shiba Inu, they are sisters. Sami (Masami) a Cream and Miko (Miyako) a Black and Tan. My daughter and I spent many hours working with them and took them through 2 obedience classes. We socialized them with other dogs, but they still prefer to just be with each other. We also socialized them with people. I call Sami an attention hog as she will seek attention from anyone. Miko on the other hand is more Shiba like and reserved around strangers. They turned 13 March 1st and they are still active and play with each other. I hope I have many more years with them as they have been the best dogs I have ever had!!

Luckily, my shiba inu has accepted her sister. We recently adopted her, I kinda knew what to look for. My shiba is a male and likes playful , mainly females AND submissive pups. I got a corgi/pitbull mix. She can be a bit too hyper, specially when he’s done playing and wants to be left alone. She is still learning the cues. My shiba inu is currently somewhere in the house while my new pup is cuddling with me. Perfect balance ☯️
