The native Japanese Spitz breeds including the Shiba Inu have very strong wolf-like instincts and behaviours. One of them is not liking eye contact. For dogs/wolves, looking directly into the eye means confrontation, so naturally they tend to avoid eye contact. This is why it is crucial to start training them as early as possible.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE! look into counter conditioning and desensitization training. i got a rescue who was kept in her kennel all the time prior to coming to me. she was over excited around dogs and fearful of people to the point where walks were almost impossible. i got her in to training and after a lot of hard work, she got better. she wasn't perfect but she felt more comfortable. confidence is also important when they have those issues so teaching them nose work would also be extremely beneficial! exercise is probably most important! find a place that has minimal to no people around and tire your kid out! this can make training easier.

Regarding training a Shiba, you have to be assertive and consistent, and you also have to reward desired behavior rather than punishing bad behavior. The Shiba Inu's mindset is "what's in it for me?", and they won't do something if they don't see any point to it. But they learn extremely quickly when given an incentive.

@@munchocrisps There's quite a few people who have had success with them. But they're among the best problem solvers not only among domestic dogs but among canines in general, and they're extremely loyal.

I may have gotten lucky but my Kira (shiba inu) was very easy to train, praise is a huge part of it . Kira knows when she is good and wants to please our family, each of us and she demands interaction with us all daily. I have had many dogs in my life and I will say without hesitation that Kira is the smartest and possible the best mannered dog I have had the pleasure to live with. We get mobbed at the local pet store by all of the locals and workers that know her by name and just want to be with her even for a few minutes.

Michael Bancroft can I ask how she gets on with other dogs? My dream dog is a shiba inu. I’ve never lived without dogs, and I’ve always had males. (They’ve never been aggressive towards other dogs) But I would love a female shiba. I’ve researched the breed and read that females can be picky and ‘moody’ with other dogs. Can early socialisation prevent this?

@@Bea_678 she is actually very friendly with all animals so far and not dog aggressive. Please remember that dogs are like humans in that they develop personalities so no two will ever be alike. Kira is a female so she would be less likely to be as aggressive as a male.

Although the things you explained are spot-on, you (and most all-about-Shiba-Inu videos) failed to address a VERY important factor about this breed - that they can EASILY become AGGRESSIVE if you don't exercise and train them properly. These dogs don't nip you - they bite. Hard. Hard enough to draw blood. They mean business when they bite. The native Japanese Spitz breeds are VERY DOMINANT and need a good pack leader to keep them stable. These dogs were not bred to follow commands. They were bred to do as their instincts tell them. I like to describe them as "trainable wolves". Here in Japan, Shiba Inus are like the Pitbulls of USA. They cause the most serious biting incidents, the most given up by owners, and the most to be euthanised. In every dog shelter and rescue organisation you see lots of Shiba Inus. They are NOT for everyone, especially people who have not done enough research on dog psychology and proper training.

They are amazing dogs - we have two, with the love and the headaches. That final scene with Jimmy on his back. His two canines are showing, and that means "I love you", or "I love what you are doing." Put ours on their back, rub the belly, or preferably the neck, a canine tooth, usually just one comes out. It's like a snake's fang. Unbelievably intelligent. Once a shibe sets its mind on getting or doing something, it will happen. It might not be immediate, but it will happen. As in, "there is butter on the table, I love butter, I will get butter." Shedding: HORRIBLE. You will get the equivalent of an extra shiba every 3-4 days, every 2-3 in the springtime. Get a good vacuum! We have a dyson, it keeps up, just barely. Absolute loyalty to 1 person. He or she will love every member of its pack, would easily kill for any member were they to be threatened, but loyalty belongs to only one person. Ellie commands me, demands I take her for her afternoon walk, but won't obey my commands the way she obey's my son's. Oh, you forgot the Shiba Scream, well documented on KZbin. Do something the shibe disapproves of, like giving it a bath (they hate water, won't go near it), you will hear a blood curdling scream that sounds like you were slowly twisting the dog's hind leg off and tearing it from it's body. They recover instantly. And finally, they all think they are cats.

It's a very good video about shiba inu. As a two years old shiba owner, I just agree with all of these points. I will just say a shiba have some phases during its first year, especially with socialization. I think he changes his behavior towards other dogs when he is around 10 to 12 months and you have to be very aware of that. It's a critical périod in my point of view. Otherwise, a shiba inu is a very affectionnated dog if you build strong bonds with him. Take him of for walk every day, play with him every day, do not use violence as an educational way. Cheers from France.

Hi Iebourse, welcome and thanks for your in-depth comment. Absolutely like mentioned in the video first year is most critical to built a strong bond with your dog including socialize your Shiba Inu as early as when safe to do so. Although I would say even after the first year it is still important to be patient, firm and consistent when it comes to obedience and behavior training. Appreciate the comment. Cheers from US👋

YES!! there is exactly that!!! - I had no idea this would happen, but managed by pure instinct and some luck to correct my shiba when she did her "teenager" experiment with dog-aggression, and we got it sorted out. A high percentage of other shiba owners over the years in our neighbourhood did not catch that change as their cute puppies grew up, and their dogs are now somewhat to extremely dog-aggressive, which is a shame.

I got my Shiba Inu from a pound in Korea. Unfortunately she wasn’t properly socialized when we got her, and she was already a year old. She is surprisingly obedient to the family, but she still chases and barks at other dogs (especially big dogs; she is really scared of them), and is scared of most other humans... But my family loves her very much, and give her plenty of love every day!

Very good advice! I have 2 Shiba Inu, they are sisters. Sami (Masami) a Cream and Miko (Miyako) a Black and Tan. My daughter and I spent many hours working with them and took them through 2 obedience classes. We socialized them with other dogs, but they still prefer to just be with each other. We also socialized them with people. I call Sami an attention hog as she will seek attention from anyone. Miko on the other hand is more Shiba like and reserved around strangers. They turned 13 March 1st and they are still active and play with each other. I hope I have many more years with them as they have been the best dogs I have ever had!!

Great video, shiba's are the best. I have a 8 month old and she's so funny. While they are fiercely independent it's my experience that if you spend the time to train them from early on and you have a lot of patience, they are just as trainable as other dogs.

What did not help was my parents doing things to either undermine his progress, teach him bad behaviors, or effect his health negatively. I've only had my Shiba inu for eight months now, but eye contact is definitely big with him. He's very smart and only follows my commands if I have a treat *sigh*. He definitely is unlike any other dog I've encountered and I'd recommend anyone who adopts/purchases one to research the breed thoroughly. He's my dream dog so I can't believe I get to come home to him everyday. Something else I personally believe that could be covered in this video or next would be Body Language. Tail up, Tail down, Ears down, and Ears cocked to the side (I'm sure there is more tells). Assessing your dog's body language and determining your Shiba's mood might be paramount in a situation they might have not encountered before. As my Shiba is quiet and doesn't growl/bark at other dogs or humans, I've had to learn his body language to get him out of a situation that he might not be comfortable with. I believe this topic would be useful for all Shiba inu owners at any age of their dog.
@SuperShiba
@SuperShiba 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Body language is absolutely important and it takes time and experiences to learn those nuances. Shiba inus are too smart and they just like to "choose" when they want to listen to your command. They are still absolutely adorable though❤

Hi Marmar, thanks for the comment. Young puppy go through teething stage where they bite a lot. There are a few things you can try. 1) whenever your puppy bites, you make it sounds like it hurts, this works for me because your puppy would not want to hurt you. 2) Did you make sure you provide plenty of safe chewing toys for your dog? everytime puppy bites direct him to items that he is allowed to chew on and praise him when he is chewing on dog toys or bone. It will be a long journey but stay firm and consistent it will get better eventually. Good luck👍

A Shiba (3yo boy) was introduced to me as a first dog because my boyfriend has one. Luckily he trained the Shiba well and him and I are both incredibly stubborn ourselves. I learned everything there is to know, I was used to training cats (stubborn too) and the mothers in my family are all quite the matriarchal Italian mothers. So luckily I can use that to my advantage with training a Shiba because I never get tired and luckily my boyfriend is even more stubborn so I don't overwhelm him. I never get tired training the Shiba. The Shiba is used to know that if I call for something, I do it only twice as clear as I can and if he doesn't react: I WILL come to HIM and make it happen. And if he does do what I want I praise him very much and he gets a chance to earn his favorite treats. And sterilising him helped so incredibly much. Since he got sterilised he finally made new friends!

The stubborn, intelligent dog breeds are very satisfying to train. When you manage to be in charge it feels good, but these kinds of breeds are definitely for either a dedicated first time owner (who takes the time to learn about the breed and work on it), or old hands, who know what they are doing.

Hi Anthony, thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel😆👍 When jimmy was much younger (week 8-10) we monitor his water intake closely and remove water 2 hours before sleep. Usually we remove water at around 8 pm and will take him for his last walk 9-9:30pm. He did, however, for a few nights make noise so we need to take him out during the night. It will get better as they age, the first few weeks are not easy. Enjoy the ride and good luck👍

Thing is that I live in an apartment. However, there are long side walks and a dog park and nearby trails. However, I'm concerned about noise and quiet so I feel like I can't get one until I buy a house. On the other hand, I hear and see Japanese KZbinrs have them in an apartment and people have even bigger dogs here. I'm also afraid of it terrorizing my remaining cat. Never had a dog, never wanted one - except for a Shiba Inu is finally making me seriously consider all the work. I've had two cats pass away in the past year and one of them was seriously Shiba like it seems like, basically a disrespectful huge cat bigger than small dogs who seemed to think it was a dog. Chewed through dog toys and had incredible athleticism 😂
