I have many responsibilities. I’m a Wife, custodial guardian to my two younger siblings, my grandmothers main caretaker, been TTC for 5 years, and a welding teacher. People constantly are calling my name, asking me to do/find things. The only time I have to myself is when I’m gaming. That’s why I prefer single-player video games. I don’t have to talk to anyone or answer any questions. I get to just put my headphones on and immerse myself in a world of being a badass zombie killing machine! I don’t have to think about what I’m about to do, what still need to be done, or how my room is still messy. It’s me time.

My favorite game types are bus and trucking simulation games which teaches me alot about operation and history behind them. The reason I play is to relax, for the creative aspect (ability to create your own models in a 3d program and even repaints), because its fun, because its my passion. The good thing about simulator is that they are never toxic and fun for all age groups even though not the most social games. I also work full time 40 + hours so I am able to balance work and game time.

This is part of the reason why I prefer to play games as opposed to reading comic books or watching movies. I feel myself becoming part of the story as I lead my characters(s) through various challenges and obstacles and every decision I make can impact the progress for better or for worse. It's storytelling that allows you to engage and take part rather than sitting still and watch or read the story unfold. And nowadays the stories in videogames are more interesting than movies.

Ive completely stopped playing for about 3-4 months now. I like the new boredom I get, it makes my mind actually want to go on a drive or go to Walmart, or lift weights, or watch sports every weekend and start a fantasy team to manage (just some ideas that I do now that others can adopt). I get less social anxiety when I meet people now, its still kinda there but not even close to what it was. My hygiene is back to normal after the all day and night gaming. I would wake up and because I didnt have anything planned, I would go straight to my xbox and another wasted day would go by. I think because of my past, video games let me escape and I was never fully able to digest the mess up's and screw ups of my past until I quit. The brain doesn't like those painful memories so it finds way to not think of them, now I have a benchpress in my garage that I go to when im sad or mad. Get a new routine and stick to it is my best advice. After the week I quit I decided to go back to college so my days are pretty much filled up and the weekend is just football now. I like this new me. I still think of gaming which is why I came back to visit this channel which helped me out so much. I also look at one of my gaming buddies that streams on twitch everyday and think of how much of his existence isn't much. Ive tried to hangout with him multiple times in person but he says 'im streaming' to his 2 viewers. Why not hang around real people? why not just go get a bite to eat with ur friend and go outside? I realized I was like him after my old friend asked me to go to Mardi Gras with him and I was so nervous I said no. I wanted to stay in my safe space which was gaming. Im getting more social and adding social things to my resume like weight lifting and college. thanks again man, if not for this channel I would think I was the odd one out for not continuing to play with them everyday but I found out theres others like me.

It's a good list, but I think you should be more critical of some reasons. It's important to remember that video games are nothing more than visual art entertainment activity and they are not able to actually fulfill certain needs. Too many gamers get fooled by the sense of accomplishment they get from playing games. I talked to many people about their reasons and many of them don't play for fun but only because the game satisfies their needs to be good at something (competitives), make progress (achievers), be recognized (status seekers) or own something (collectors). What they don't realize is that all of that is pretty much meaningless, as in 99% of cases none of it translates into real-life benefits. Novelty, fun, social interactions are all healthy reasons to play games. But if you play just to feel good about yourself - please do something else that not only will make you feel good but also for a good reason. I'm not saying that occasional dopamine high is wrong. Just like it's fine to have a drink with friends, have fun and enjoy the taste. But if you start drinking all day long, collecting bottles, bragging about how good you are at drinking, etc you just become ridiculous and waste your life on living in an imaginary world.

I found myself actually getting tired of the games I have. Grinding and collecting and stuff. I find tiring. But I still want to play them... Or at least want to play something Sooner I found interactive visual novels appealing compared to grinding. I figured maybe Im attracted to the game's story and how it progresses more... So maybe im leaning more on novelty cause the story is a thing I can't experience in the real world (but then again. I love relating to the characters struggle which opposes the idea of novelty a bit)

I think another reason is shitty life or a perception of a shitty life with no way out. There is this whole popular trope of a guy who works some low rank menial job IRL but then is a leader of a powerful gild in the virtual world. I do think that there are a number of people who feel like they are "stuck" working a job that they don't like and they feel like there is no way for them to build a better life IRL so they turn to video games in order to full fill that need for respect and social status from other players in the virtual world because they feel like it would be possible or easier for them to get it there.

Video games provide an illusion. There is illusion of Mastery, a player may believe they is getting better at combat or driving or whatever, in reality they are just getting better at pressing buttons in a particular sequency. Illusion of risky taking, player aren't actually at any risk, dying in a videogame only means you will get to spend more time to finish it but if time is the only thing a player risk than just by continuing to play they are losing time. Illusion of progress and collectables, the only progress is the skill of pressing buttons and the only thing being collected are bits of code. There are no items, just code for a fictional character who is also made of code. It can be a means to socialize, but so is the nearby subway station. It can be a means to gain money under very specific situations. But at the end of the day is just a magic trick, once you see through, it no longer work.
