Agree about the touchpad. I was so happy about the large trackpad when I bought my Macbook Pro 16, but it's too big for me. I just can't get used to using it. Always feel like I have to concentrate on where to tap rather than just using it. I think just slightly smaller, perhaps the size of that surface laptop, is just right? I never got used to the notch. I ended up using that dark bar app to make the top section true black, to hide it. Personally, I think all laptop chips are fast enough. Even the old M1 chips. But I love that the Elite chip has wifi 7 and AV1 encode and decode and keen to see what the extra AI capability can do in future. Although with Windows devs moving so slowly, I think by the time useful AI apps are good, we will have a 5 gen Elite chip in 2029 Great to finally see Windows laptops that are also quiet and doesn't lose 80% performance when unplugged. I really hope developers port their apps to ARM quickly. Still can't help but feel it might be worth using Mac for a couple more years until more apps run on ARM. IDK. After using MacOS since I bought his Mac pro 16 M1 Max, along with my Windows work laptops, I still prefer Windows for how it manages, well, windows. Especially with multiple screens too. Let's just say I finally understood why Mac users always use apps in a windowed mode. I do love that Mac OS just always feels fast and snappy. Seems like there will always be compromises on both sides. O jeez and who doesn't hate all the non stop windows updates. Damn. Might just stick with my Macbook a few more years. But this Surface does look so nice

@imopn
@imopn 18 күн бұрын
@@vincecool72 yeah especially the right click function. On a slighty smaller track pad feels like I can just easily hit that bottom right corner without thinking about it while on the large MacBook pro 16 touch pad I sometimes right click/tap, and then realize I'm not close enough to that bottom right and have to move my hand again. Not the biggest issue it only happens a few times a day and certainly better than some of the tiny tea pads I had in laptops many years ago. But using this large one made me wonder if something in the middle won't be ideal

MacBooks are excellent hardware and a great experience if you go into the entire Apple Eco system. BUT, expensive, subscription land, lack of compatibility and a poor multi-monitor/desk experience compared to Windows. Great laptop experience though. I find myself using MacOS when I travel and Windows on my desktop. I was "burned" with a $4000 16" Intel MacBook Pro which I wish I had never bought. Poor repairability, zero ability to upgrade and plenty of driver/compatibility issues which have only gotten worse over the years. And it is only four years old! For example, my year old dock worked fine in MacOS (Intel and M1) only a few months ago, but fails to recognize the external monitors correctly with the latest OS update. BS like that almost never happens with Windows. Apple drops hardware and driver support with annoying and expensive regularity and speed.

@@Bagel937considering u don’t care about the os, id say Mac if u have a lot of Apple devices for better integration with the ecosystem (trust me, it’ll help a lot as a student). The battery life of the Mac’s is just amazing, some of my classmates barely need to charge once a week. Also, in my experience, Mac’s have been a lot more stable compared to frequent small bugs and freezes that comes with windows (again this is my personal experience). Rn, I would say the two devices are very closely matched, but make sure to take at least 16 gb of ram and ideally 512 gb of ssd regardless of what u pick. The only reason I’d slightly not recommend the surface is cuz windows on arm is relatively new, so some of ur schools IDEs might not be supported yet, while Mac has had a few years to mature. Overall, they’re a close match and it’s upto u

Plus it makes ur backpack a lot lighter lol. U could also look into the surface pro if u want an all in one, it would probably be cheaper than a laptop + ipad. But I'm not sure how good the battery life/performance is on the new sp, so u would need to research that.

Good review, it's really great that we're seeing competitors to Apple Silicon starting to appear and viable Windows on ARM options! The AI functionality of these new Arm Windows laptops is a little disappointing, that copilot app that pops up when you press the dedicated button is just a PWA web app and isn't running locally. None of that was running on the machines NPU, I think it's currently limited to the de-noise features, co-creator in paint (button to the right of 'creator' inside the app) and live translation. Always interested in how well the bundled AI features run with the device in airplane mode, i.e. do they genuinely function on local processing only as claimed by MS?

Maybe in a few gens, just remember the M1 Ultra "only" had 16 power cores, but the Snapdragon X Elite needed 12 power cores to compete the 4 power cores in the basic M model, so they can be power hungry, when more than a few in use (multitasking device, each app use one sigle core, but 6-8 app use a lot od cores)

Your translation layer test is a bit flawed on the conclusion part. The graphics is more powerful on the M3, so that FPS comparison is not the translation layer you are comparing. Both Rosetta 2 and PRISM (which have been worked on for many years - since first snapdragon Cx Surfaces) are very effective, up to around 80-90% efficiency?

It's great that Windows users can now experience the amazing performance and usage of an ARM laptop... which I already had the joy of having 3 years ago with my M1 Macbook Air. It's too late now for Windows to win me back cos I've spent all this time entrenching my workflow into MacOS. The levels of productivity I gained and time saved with such a wonderful device has been priceless. It would take Apple to screw things up, be it with exorbitant prices or an OS disaster to make me switch back to Windows.

The traditional PC bulding with ARM is basically not exists, even if they put a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot and use any external GPU that is just ruin the whole thing, because their internal memory bandwith is 136GB/s or something, but for examle Apple M3 Max laptop has 400GB/s bandwith, and the PCIe 4.0 x16 slot only have 32GB/s, so it's like you add a HDD next to the SSD, but that only slow down everything, because all component need to wait for the slowest to finish.. you can't send 400GB/s if the slot only able to receive 32GB/s so all advantages are wasted, and slowing down the others, just because of the replaceable parts have outdated and slow connection.. (the PCIe 8.0 x16 is far away what required for that 400GB/s)

Some great deals with the MB Pro 14 (M3 Pro) on Amazon in the UK due to where it is in its life cycle, so for £1899, you can get 18GB/512GB, £200 more than the price you listed for the MB Air M3 and £350 more than the Surface Laptop. You get a better chip, more RAM, miniLED, better speakers, 120Hz, more ports, etc. I see it as a no-brainer to pay the extra for the MB Pro 14 M3 Pro ATM over the MB Air. The Surface Laptop X-Elite in the UK is sold out of any model with 512GB or more. It looks like the marketing blitz has worked, as it is not under-supply, as that would be disappointing.

The TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) measurement that Apple use is different from Qualcomm's. Apple's measurement is based on FP16 while Qualcomm's is based on int8. Which is to say, if measured with the same metrics, let's say int8, M3 is about 36 TOPS.

Isn't the Snapdragon 45 TOPS only in INT4? Their early articles only said it's INT4 (Apple switched to INT8 from FP16, that is right, but based on their claims the M4 38 TOPS in INT8 is about 10-15% improvements over the M3, so M3 should be 35 TOPS in INT8, just like the A17 too)

Your segment on comparing Prism and Rosetta didn't compare either of them at all! You just compared the GPU between the two. Just run a CPU benchmark (or compile a simple benchmark) with both and report the result, what you did was worse than doing nothing at all as you just spread misinformation.

this is what i found over the years with computers. no matter how how great the computer is, if it had windows on it seems like over time maybe within 2years of regular use windows start to get sluggish, more pops, more problems. the windows OS is absolute garbage and it is it that destroys machines. i have a mbp pro 2015 and it still operates like the day i bought. my m1 from 2020 is the same too. rock solid i like the windows laptop but wouldn't buy it because of windows

Here’s the idiocy of comments like this: 1. They’re a dime-a-dozen. Everyone who is potentially against everything Apple does will, at some point, say something like this with no proof. 2. They ignore facts - or they interpret facts as subjective opinion. So I guess if the Mac is objectively louder and has a faster processor than the Surface, it’s somehow a bias towards Apple. Hmm, well, maybe in some other universe but not in this one. 3. They also assume that if someone wasn’t “biased” towards Apple, they would simply state that the Surface is a better product, which ironically is a form of personal bias. Go figure. 🤷‍♂️ Unfortunately, the trend today in reviews like this (not this review), especially with Apple products, is that if one gives a positive review, that person is biased, or an Apple sheep, or a paid shill. However, if one gives a negative review of an Apple product, it would be considered an “honest and truthful review” because no “Apple kool-aid” was consumed before the review. 🙄 It never ends. Apple haters stand out like a sore thumb and they’re easy to pick apart. I just wish they would admit their dislike of Apple (sigh). By the way “instashorts”, I enjoyed how your bias was served on a platter by a certified MS engineer 🤣. Bon appetit!

@@philamavikane9423 I have the 13 inch surface laptop 7 with an x elite 80-100 chip. The benchmarks for geekbench 6 and 3dmark were nearly identical regardless of whether it was plugged in or not. As with all laptops, including MBP, more demanding tasks are going to drain the battery faster. The standby drain on the new suface laptops is so small it may as well not exist. You can just close the lid and it willl lose only a percent or two over 12 hours. I charged it on Saturday and got 3 days of office/web/youtube in the evenings before it even went down to 40%. The performance on battery is the same as plugged and the battery life is amazing. Based on other reviews I've seen the MBP still has better battery life, but that comes down in part to them having larger batteries. I've never owned a MBP so I can't say for certain, but what I can tell you is that the performance and efficency on the new surface devices absolutely delivers.
