I consider myself fortunate to have been introduced to personal finance at a young age. I started working at the age of 19, purchased my first house at the age of 28, was laid off at the age of 36 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and immediately sought advice from an advisor to manage the expansion of my finances. I got married in a restaurant that was closed on Sunday afternoons. It had a room with a fireplace. It was beautiful. I bought a roll of white lace plastic tablecloth that we used to cover their black tables. Wedding and reception in the same room. Awesome!

People now day don’t seem to think they can get married without a $40,000 wedding..my wedding cost around $300 and my mom and dad paid $300 for my dress..got married in church I attended, flowers on the altar, had 3 bridesmaids dresses made and rented mens tucks..reception in fellowship hall with cake, punch, mints and chips..this was 44 years ago so of course things were cheaper but I cannot imagine having a wedding costing $1,000s of dollars, I would elope, lol

I visited my company's corporate office once and there is a Starbucks in the lobby but free Starbucks drip coffee in the breakrooms. Every morning there was still a wait in line to get coffee. I happily waited knowing it was going on my expense report but I kind of felt bad for the people that had to resist that temptation every day. The worst was that you could charge it on your employee card and they would just deduct it from your paycheck so people wouldn't even pay attention to how much was spent until they got their pay stub :(

That 1 in 10 families rent a storage unit is a wild stat to me. No wonder there’s been so many new storage unit places pop up by me. My question is what are you storing that you can’t fit in your house, are you a hoarder? Or do you hold inventory for your business? I just never saw a point of those things for the average person.

I watched this video of a couple who would buy from yard sales and resell the items for profit. They acquired so much stuff they rent a storage unit. They spend $300 a month to store items they would make a $5 profit on. Even if they sold everything in the storage unit (for top dollar), they would still end up losing money from the amount they’ve paid in storage fees. They couldn’t wrap their brain around that

A lot of people in small apartments rent one for seasonal decorations and things they do not have room for in the house. In our area, a lot of storage rooms are also rented by people in the military who are deployed.

Goodwill is a great place to get baby clothes. They grow so fast, so a lot of the stuff is like new. It is kind of fun digging through it all.

I find that issue is more about the mum statement than the baby. It doesn't care what it's wearing or the last trends and they grow alarmingly fast. Anything 2nd hand or free, someone always just had a baby. Give them a good wash and free clothes..

I know a woman who's husband passed. She put the bulk of what was in the house in a storage unit and moved in with her parents. Fast-forward about 15 years; her kids took over; something they should have done years earlier because of dementia. Most of the stuff and junk was put on her now deceased parents carport, unprotected from the elements. Months later they brought a roll off dumpster to the property which became the coffin for a good portion of it. Some of it trash that never should have been packed; papers nobody needed and multiple mattresses Goodwill would have rejected, as well as stuff they would have been grateful for. The rest of it sat there for 2 or 3 more years. They just brought another roll off - the fourth in as many years; each has left with plenty of room and much left behind - more went in, the rest is still there. Anyway, it was just a complete waste of $22,000, money that is really needed now for her care.

I would add more to the list: 16. McDonalds and most other fast food chains. Why pay for overpriced food that's bad for you too. Pack your own sandwiches for road trips. 17. Starbucks. Make your own coffee at home. Program your coffeemaker's timer so you don't have to get up so early in the morning to make coffee. 18. Amusement parks. You spend most of the day standing in lines and everything in the park is overpriced. 19. Movie Theaters. A splurge nowadays, not just the movie concessions. Even subscriptions like Disney+ are a waste of money too. All the Disney classics are at your local libraries. I just borrow DVD / Bluray from the local library and make my own air popped popcorn at home for the family on movie nights. 20. Faster home internet plans. You most likely don't need Gigabit speeds. Try the basic speed tiers first and make sure you have up to date network equipment like your WiFi router. Never rent your ISP's equipment either. Use your own. 21. Unlimited mobile data plans. You probably don't need it. Wait till you have wifi for big downloads and updates. Save videos and music onto your phone or tablet for offline on the go use. 22. Basic vehicle maintainances. You can service things like the air filters, windshield wipers, bulbs, and car battery yourself. 23. Luxury cars especially German ones. Stick with Toyotas. You just need to get from point A to B. Don't waste money and time on expensive repairs and depreciation. 24. Gym memberships. You can walk around the local park or do workouts for free. 25. Bottled water. In most cases, you can install your own water filter at home. Bring your own filtered water with you. 26. Name brand products. Store brand or generics are often good if not better than the name brand ones. In this economy with the inflation, we all really need to cut back on spending.

I’ve improved my body composition by lifting and progressing. Weights are expensive im not quitting my gym membership for that. It’s easy to get a cheap membership tho I pay $10 a month and use it 4-5 days out of the week.

My German luxe car just reached ten yrs old, I’ve had it for nine and each time I look at it I still get the same joy as the day I bought it. Its style hasn’t aged. If you buy something you truly love, use it often and treat it well, it’s a considered purchase that can bring much happiness. A Toyota can cost just as much depending on which one you buy.

#16. If you buy mcdonalds, use their apps and only buy in deals. (as a treat). Learn how to cook! #17 Don't drink coffee everyday. It will make you sluggish later, and makes you tolerant to coffee. Which, again, makes you drink more coffee just to get that same high. #18 Parks are free #19 KZbin has free movies (not piracy, they offer free movies). #20/#21 It depends. If you download a lot then it will save you a ton of money. If you want to save then just don't use fiber optic and settle for Mint's unli plan which you can both use as home internet, or data. (use can also use a dedicated cheap phone you can buy as a hotspot for it) #22/#23 Ride a motorcycle (or a bike). Cars are expensive. You don't need it unless you have a family of 4+. If you live solo, then a scooter is fine. #24 Buy dumbbells and use exercise apps. #25 Don't reuse bottled water AND ALWAYS CLEAN YOUR WATER BOTTLE! (bacteria multiplies every 15 minutes). #26 Yes, generic are the same with name brands when it comes to efficacy, but sometimes people think name brands work better due to placebo (I still buy generics since I know about the placebo effect).

Ridesharing apps SAVE me money by allowing me and my husband to share 1 car. I mostly use public transit, but there are times when its not feasible. IF you are cutting down a car, ridesharing CAN be much cheaper than, gas, insurance, wear-and-tear, ect. of your car, depending on how often you use it. Sometimes biking, walking, or public transit are not good options. You can pry my ridesharing from my cold,dead hands. The ability to use rideshare apps have saved me SO much money.

I work at a cafe in a hospital and it's insane to me how many employees eat there for both bfast and lunch and get two coffees every day. Thats alot of money!! Make food at home, and treat yourself say on a Friday

I also used to work at a hospital. I talked to one of the people that worked in the coffee shop there. She said it was not unusual for people to buy two or three coffees a day, these were the six dollar type of coffees. Four shots of caffeine each. They were wired on a sugar high and the caffeine high, and they were spending a lot of money. It’s crazy.

I miss drive-in theaters. You could see a _double-feature_ for $6.50 and bring your own popcorn. Up until about 2006 there was an old drive-in open with a half-hour's drive of me, and it was a fun and easy way to spend a Saturday night. We even had a tailgate potluck with friends at a drive-in double feature one time. Nobody disturbing you by talking on their cell or being loud in the seat next to you. No need to hire a sitter, take the kids along already dressed in their pajamas, and they fall asleep in the car before the second show.

my husband and i got married in 2020, didn't want to spend a lot of money on it so for our rings we went to Reese found them on sale (did buy them with a CC however we paid that off in less then a year). i got my dress from ROSS store spent money on the marrage license, and a few things from hobby lobby only bad thing is we got it from the wedding section we could of gotten the sand cheaper in another section of the store. in total the wedding was 150.00 paid in cash hubs family paid for the food

I agree with George on this list, except for the movie theater concessions. We go to the movie theater maybe once or twice per year. It is nice to see some movies on the big screen, so we want to help ensure the theater stays in business. They get very little money from the movie studio, relying on concessions to keep the lights on. Since we go so infrequently, we can treat it as a splurge and get the large popcorn and drink for $15. How's this for cheap...er, I mean FRUGAL? My wife and I always give each other nice, high-dollar cards. We do this while at the greeting card rack in the store. I browse through the cards to find the perfect one, and hand it to her. She does the same for me. Then we put them back. Of course, we don't write in the cards or even put them in their envelopes. The sentiments have been shared and it didn't cost us $20 for two cards. Cards for other people are normally from a bulk greeting card pack or the $1 card section.

Made the mistake of purchasing a new car a while ago and I definitely will not do that again. Would you please make a video as to how we should go about purchasing a used car? My daughters son-in-law took me to the movies and with tickets hotdogs drinks, popcorn, etc. we spent or I should say they spent about 95 bucks and I was amazed. And then my son-in-law said it’s concession sales that keeps the theaters running so if we don’t buy their food, they’ll end up closing down. And this is a little teeny town, Tennessee and the only theater around 4 miles so he was doing his part. I know I have a better understanding of popcorn prices.😂

Nobody talks about it, but walmart pickup / walmart drop off is the greatest budgeting hack ever. Shop from your home from your meal plan, know exactly how much youre going to spend before spending it, and dont get caught giving into the end caps which try to make ya buy doritos on sale. You'll end up eating healthier and on a better budget. This is how my wife was able to become a stay at home mom while I was making 50k a year

You can also just stick to a list. I make it a game to see how fast I can get in, all the items in the buggy and to my truck. Only times I go off list is when I see something I know didn't make it onto the list but should have.

Lovely greeting cards are available at the Dollar Tree and some are only 50 cents. I also cut greeting cards we have received into post card size and save by category. Then I can use a postcard stamp (cheaper than a first-class stamp). I find that people appreciate being remembered, not necessarily how expensive the card is.

TSA can stop you for having too many snacks . My buddy has dietary restrictions so he travels with a bunch of special bars and he has been flagged at security for too many food items .

What did they do when they "flagged" him? Inspect him more closely? I can live with that. Confiscate some? I can also take that risk (it has happened, ONCE, in many years of flying). But, generally, we pack abundant food for international and domestic trips, and if we avoid pastes and liquids, we have very few problems. If you bring a water bottle, dump it before security, and refill it after. Easy-peasy. If you have a medical condition (like the friend you mentioned), you can research how to bring proof from your doc for the accommodations you need.

I love this. I've been interested in real estate investing and as such have spent a lot of time talking to real estate investors who have very carefully picked out parameters for determining whether a property is worth the investment. It somewhat reminds me of eccentric collectors that are looking for very specific markers of quality. I think shopping similarly for things we spend money on is an excellent skill. I'm also very lucky that I married a woman who naturally does this. She won't pay full price for anything, and it helps us focus on spending money specifically on things that are meaningful to spend money on rather than just buying things with little or no thought that we may or may not actually use or enjoy.

I love watching George's videos. He is entertaining and has good points in his various videos but if there is one thing that I will not take any advice from him about is cars. He purchased a used (4 owners) 165,000 miles Tesla with 2 minor accidents... You can't tell me that it is wrong that my husband and I purchased our Tesla new (our only car).. We don't care about depreciation (it is worth about 49% now 4 years later), etc.

Is this a good time to talk about destination weddings? In my opinion, they are, or can be, an unnecessary burden on the invitees, some of whom may be your family members who are on a budget. To me, if a certain destination is that important to you, have your honeymoon there! Going to a wedding already creates an expense for your guests ( clothes, gift, etc) Don’t make it worse. My spouse and I recently attended a local wedding of someone who wasn’t even that close of a friend and it cost us $300 when all was said and done!

Definitely agree with this list. My family found a great plan with our cell carrier for a family of 4 so it's $25 each. It's straight talk. It works for us. We have limited choices where we live.

As far as greeting cards, I pay apittance a year for American Greetings E cards. Animated, singing , holidays etc. Worth Every Penny. They only time you should send physical cards is sympathy cards.

Just no on the nails --- literally tried that for 7 months and I was a late start to getting my nails done at 42. But I will never go back to doing my own nails -- getting a gel or lcn is worth my time having to NOT worry about my nails and the upkeep - if its $65 every month so be it. I'm frugal in other areas so It isn't a hit at all to our wallet. And I always but dollar tree cards.

Overpriced item: specialty coffee drinks. Frugal alternative: stovetop espresso maker/moka pot and manual milk frothed/French press. You can hack your way to near cafe quality lattes, mochas, etc. with less than $50 of equipment (you could probably get it for $20-$30 if you cruise fb marketplace).

I’m in the unfortunate position of needing a new vehicle and it’s crazy how many people tell me to get a new car so it’s reliable or right now new is a better deal. Even if it is a better deal, if I can’t afford to pay cash it isn’t a good deal! For now my 02 randomly doesn’t start but on the days it works I’ll find something I can pay cash for. Ideally before the new school year so my boss doesn’t get upset if I’m late again cause I had to take the city bus last min 😂

On #3, we can beat your 99¢ card from TJ’s: we just send one of those card that various charities mail out 5-9 at a time. Some group or another mails us a packet about once every other week. Some have birthday or whatever greetings preprinted in them, most are blank. Oh, we have never given money to any of these groups.
