Of the two films in particular, and among the sub-genre overall, I'd agree Leviathan is the stronger film. While obviously taking notes from other sources, it's casting and production value does elevate it a bit and make it a good watch in its own right. It's not doing anything particularly original, but it's doing the fundamentals well and delivering on its premise. A solid "Neo-B" movie in the vein of Tremors or Maximum Overdrive or Ice Pirates. Not quite a classic, but not MST3K fodder either.
