1. Get the right gear: camera, headphones, microphone which is usually default on laptops 2. Back up, set yourself up so the shot shows torso up 3. Lights and no distracting background 4. Focus on the conversation substance rather than your appearance, forget about it 5. Avoid awkwardness by reminding family to not disturb you, spot check appearance and background, and get things you need (coffee, water, website links, photos, agenda, use restroom, conversation starter) 6. Prepare for first impression by greeting hi and knows who’s present; use waiting time for icebreaker/socialize 7. Look at the camera (move the thumbnail as close to camera as possible) 8. Wave and smile during intro and outro 9. Happy and confident voice 10. Designate a driver/leader 11. Use hand gestures for engagement and explanation 12. Learn to read facial expressions 13. Dress to Impress: avoid distracting clothes such as bright patterns or clanky jewelry 14. Thank you and follow up with shared notes 15. Know your strengths and weaknesses

Pro tip: When using a Yeti or any microphone, be sure you know the pickup pattern of the microphone. Yeti is a SIDE ADDRESS microphone, meaning you talk to the SIDE of the microphone, and not the end. Move the mic close to your mouth for best results. I can always hear the echo in most of Vanessa's videos. That echo is largely eliminated when the mic is close to the mouth.

Love this! A note on the sounds - if you're typing notes, mute yourself because others on the call will hear every key stroke. Better yet, unless you're talking, mute yourself because background noises are so distracting.

I thought of you today. I was in a zoom PD. All we could see what his face and a tiny bit of shoulders. I kept pushing my screen further and further away and it still wasn't enough. I felt like he was in my personal space. I wanted to put in the chat your videos. Thanks for all the knowledge.

Don’t know if you’re on linked in learning, but you should. Majority of people just don’t get how to make a good video call. This should be a mandatory training for any employee working with a computer. Thanks.

Pro tip: Move you camera at eye level. You don't want the camera below you like how Scott has his. Looking up at your nose is not flattering. You also don't want to give the impression that you are looking down at your audience. When using the camera on the notebook computer, PROP UP the notebook so the camera is at eye level.

Vanessa mentioned she was using a dedicated microphone, the Blue Yeti. I just wanna add that it also helps to keep the mic close your mouth so it picks up less of the room noise and more of your voice. This will help a lot especially if your listeners don't have the best listening equipment.

This post was very timely, useful and informational. Thank you guys! Could you suggest any hardware options to enhance the video, microphone and lighting? I know you mentioned a circle light? Not looking to have production quality videos, just an upgraded experience for my customers in those I interact with on my zoom meetings. Thank you.

It is strange to me that most people can't figure this stuff out themselves. Looking at the comments, it appears that a lot of this stuff is not common sense and that this video is really helping out the average person. Also, she's proud of using a 4K camera (4096p) and says that she needs it yet it appears that she is broadcasting in standard def (480p). The purpose of 4K is to increase the detail of the subject but she says she is using a filter. Filters degrade the quality of the image which is how they hide flaws. I'm nitpicking. Regardless of this, I'm going to like so that others can benefit. I don't know what a "tight pattern" is but I would recommend avoiding patterns that are small (e.g. houndstooth and narrow pinstripes). Choose Large dots and wide stripes.

I couldn't DISAGREE more about the "ice breaker" at the beginning of a video call. Other than some simple hellos acknowledging everyone on the call I like to get right into it because I don't have time to kill. My day is FULL. I don't have 10 or so minutes (and I believe everyone feels this way) to waste listening to what everyone is "grateful for". When calls start this way, it feels to me like procrastination. Just my honest feelings here.
