I've been using computers since they first appeared on desktops in offices. A long time. But the changes of the last 10 years or so have me on my ninth nerve. A LOT of it seems unnecessarily complicated, using far too many steps to accomplish simple tasks. When I have tried to get help understanding these things, I've just gotten more confused by techies who use an arcane language I do not get - but when I played this video and made the changes I wanted to make from it, the instructions were so direct and the language so accessible, that I had NO PROBLEM. Consequently, I am subscrdibed to this chanel and will stay tuned. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Thanks. When I moved back home, after an accident left me disabled, word got around that I was a "computer guy" Well the town is only around 1400 souls and at the time the nearest computer repair service was well over 100 miles away. So after a quiet week or so as we unpacked our belongings, the phone began ringing, I was suddenly the most popular guy in town. Well things have changed over the past 20 years, and computer guys have come and gone, hell I even taught some young folks to take over for me. Still, even though I have pretty much told everyone that I no longer work on any machines, I get the calls, and it's hard to turn folks down, so off I go, limping along with my cane in one hand, and a flash drive in another. This type video helps a lot, when questions come up, I have a list of videos that I forward to them. Saves me a trip and gives you a few clicks.

@@rationalraven8956 what I mean is that WSL is good enough, but it cannot replace bash being directly executed by the system (without "emulation"). Because WSL is kinda like a VM, and has some sandboxing rules for security reasons, even when the account is admin. Accessing hardware directly (like USB devices, or external HDDs) is harder and limited. And as I said, it cannot install software outside of the VM (unless it's done indirectly via API)

Mighty handy stuff. Keeps the MS bar-stewards from grinding you down. Also great to learn about settings hidden away that I would probably never have found. All very sensible advice. Thank you.

Thanks, ThioJoe. Very helpful and liked your no-nonsense video presentation style. Although my version of Windows is upgraded since you made this video, I still managed to find the corresponding settings, albeit slightly different layout.

I use a Microsoft Surface Book 2 and most of these settings were off by default, glad to know they saw this video or listened to all the complaints they got.
