Hi everyone! This video contains audio files spanning from 2006 - 2021 as a way to try and share the evolution of my singing voice. I've always thought of myself as a composer first and singer second. Singing came into my life through the necessity to express ideas. My singing timeline can be broken up into 3 phases:
1) 2006 - 2010, the early phase
2) 2011 - 2015, the composition phase
3) 2016-2021, feminization of my voice
It's pretty mind bending to me that I've been singing in my currently feminized quality for such a fractional minority of my singing history. I never really had any goals or interest in singing. I just did it. It's fascinating observing how as my goals become more defined in 2015, progress starts to multiply!
00:00 Intro
01:05 2006 - the earliest recordings
02:13 2007 - silly teenage tracks
03:25 2008 - random coldplay cover
4:13 2009 - pop metalcore project
5:07 2010 - enormous level up
6:44 2011 - the beginning of composition grind
07:50 2012 - my prog metal band
08:53 2014 - my 2nd LP
10:10 2015 - beginning of feminization
11:48 2016 - becoming interested in voice
13:49 2017 - figuring out feminization
15:29 2018 - gaining control in feminization
17:27 2019 - finally passing
18:25 2020 - finally free
21:27 2021 - genuinely joyful
22:28 Seamless Voice Timeline
24:08 Conclusion
oh i also hate the phrasing "male to female voice timeline" but for the sake of the algorithm included it.
warmly,
z

If being trans has taught me anything, it's that we claim ownership of our bodies and bend them to be whatever we want them to be. I've been doing voice alongside learning audio electronics, and it's amazing how similar biasing a transistor or changing input capacitors in a fuzz pedal is to adjusting your resonance and vocal weight. The voice is an instrument, just like guitar or even amplification, and learning that you can have ownership of it is so powerful. You saying, "I own my voice" made me tear up a little and crack a smile because I felt like it all came full circle. Thank you so much for sharing this dear, you're magical! ✨✨✨

i’m a trans guy that’s been on testosterone for 1 year, 1 month, and 4 days as i write this. so my voice went from a very high tenor (my voice was pretty low for someone who’s voice hadn’t dropped), to being a low baritone. i’m working on getting my high notes back. it’s really cool to see a trans woman’s process in getting the sound she desires.

You go girl. As a singer myself I still enjoy singing tenor. Some people judge me for it, but hey if I have the choice between singing tenor opera main parts or Alto and struggling to even reach a full sound. I’m gonna sing my tenor home range. I’ve decided I’m not afraid of my voice and other people shouldn’t be either.

I was an operatic tenor and sang for about 15 years as a dramatic or heroic tenor. In my opinion to sing the way most would call singing without a mic you have to sing in the low position. A dear friend of mine is about to be the first transsexual to perform at the Metropolitan Opera. Her name is Lucia Lucas. She is a dramatic bass baritone who has already sung Wotan in Germany. One can not sing opera with a raised larynx but with a mic only in high position would seem hard to do. Zhea is, a great teacher for Voice Feminization. She is also a talented composer.

I'm having flashbacks to listening to Owl City, Boys Like Girls, and hellogoodbye with your early, early stuff. Your pre‐transition improvements were spot‐on for the genres you were doing, so it's no wonder you have such an understanding of human voice. Reminds me of a lot of the testosterone‐affected emo/post‐hardcore and prog voices i loved and still love. Then you built a new voice that's in more genres that i love, in a completely new resonance, pitch, like a new instrument playing new tunes. The newer stuff reminds me of some of Hayley Williams's new solo stuff, but in all your custom tunings/ intonations. It's really cool how you built up a voice technique even when you had more vocal dysphoria, and built on that experience to use your musical knowledge to transform your voice. It's like music and self‐healing and self‐actualization all in one.

Zhea, I just recently realized that I'm trans, but I haven't started HRT, and I don't really present myself as a woman by dressing in women's clothes.(but I'm working on that) I have a deep voice, and it is bothering me quite a lot, that I can't really sound feminine all that well. I live alone, and I sometimes talk out loud to myself in a feminine voice to work on it, for o do actually begin my transition. Watching your videos has really helped me so much . I never knew there was pitch and resonance to our voices. I thought pitch and resonance only applied to music. But with you being a composer and a singer with past recordings(which was cool to hear how your voice went from masculine to feminine over the years) This is great to hear how much you progressed over the last 15 years! I can only hope to sound more feminine as I begin my transition.

I am dealing with an extreme block/burnout and can't go back to music in a way I would like to, but just by watching this, just by listening to this... It makes me feel worthy. It gives me the confidence boost I need and it makes me feel comfortable. It makes me believe that I do have a chance to sing the way I want one day without being disgusted by my own voice. It gives me hope that not all is lost for me and that not only I can shape myself as a person in a way I like, but also shape my voice in a way that'll sound comfortable, confident and pleasant to myself. Thanks for yet another confidence/comfort boost and for being a beacon of hope in these trying times. Sincerely.

This is personally so inspiring. I just started these past couple months on trying to feminize my singing voice and it’s been quite the adventure. My main thing has been working on that mixed/ belt range and as far as consistency and range is concerned singing higher hasn’t been an issue. I think it also helps that I’m a countertenor and was training as such for a bit. But so far it’s been a lot of what you said with controlling vocal weight and when I get it right the sky’s the limit. Honestly can’t wait to see where my voice will go next

Oh my god, this is such a revelation for me. I've very much been avoiding and scared of committing to voice training because I was scared to lose my singing voice (been singing for 12 years and it's wildly important to me). I started voice training 3 years ago for a few months, and to this day, I can still pretty effortlessly slip into a decent feminine voice, but I was absolutely convinced that I would either completely lose my singing voice or keep it- but only in my masculine range. Fully convinced that I would never be able to sing well in a feminine range. But hearing you sing and, specifically, getting to see an example of what voice training can do, I know I absolutely HAVE to at least give it a fair shot.

But that was more than outweighed by watching the whole progression and getting really reassured and inspired not only by how completely you eventually transformed your voice, but also by how you are able to re-tell all those steps in the process with such a thoughtful perspective even though it's such a vulnerable topic. Thanks so much for sharing this this, it did me good to watch it and I'm sure it did for many others too! 💜

I appreciate you making these videos. I just started my transition and voice is one of my biggest hang ups. The principles make sense to me, but I am a Basso Cantabile and Im 32 years old so its hard to hear to woman in there. I understand how to control my higher register for the most part but the line between man shouting at god and falsetto choir boy is oddly thin. Ive tried listening to classic Contraltos which has helped a bit to hear examples of low feminine voices. Well one day at a time, and thanks for all the work you do and the bravery to put yourself out there. I can only hope to be half way as confident in the future. Also your musical talent is incredible. I mostly compose orchestral works and have a lot of respect for people who can make such interesting songs with such simple parts. I hope that actually sounds like a compliment lol, but I dont know how else to phrase that.

You're so beautiful, and you've been such a huge inspiration for me to keep pushing myself. Your music is beautiful. If I were on your level, I would totally love to collaborate with you even just for a song.

Honestly, you're a treasure. You have pulled off the advice attributed to St. Exupéry's, but for voice feminization: "If you wish to build a ship, do not divide the men into teams and send them to the forest to cut wood. Instead, teach them to long for the vast and endless sea." If it were only the voice lessons, that would be true, but you bring this amazing example with you into the room whenever you teach - your own progress and fabulous work. I hear it and I long for something like it and I feel the motivation swell. If you can be out there speaking, singing, self-harmonizing and rapping in your lovely voice, there's hope that I'll be able to sound how I feel and move through this world on the terms that I choose. Thank you! 💕

Oh my god. Some of these are actually so good. Idk if you’d ever be comfortable releasing some of these early ones because the voice an just it might make you uncomfortable from how cringe it is for you. But they’re genuinely awesome an id love to listen on Spotify or something

Yooo, the third song sounds like Breathe Carolina. As a former emo/scene kid I really liked that one and the post hardcore/metalcore stuff! Really cool. Wish I could make music like that! That’s what I want my voice to sound like lol. I’m going the opposite direction of you, from a feminine-sounding voice to a masculine voice (both talking and singing.)The way your voice and style grew is so inspiring. Thank you for sharing this with us and I’m so happy you reached a point where you’re happy with your voice and music. You’re amazing.

Hi Zhea! I am beyond impressed with the massive changes you have made to your singing voice in just a short time. It sounds beautiful now. I was wondering, did you track your vocal range over this time, and did it increase (either the full range or the tessitura) during that transitional period?

Wow. You've covered a lot of ground and made phenomenal progress. Would you say that this aided your feminine speaking voice or was it more of a holistic thing? Loved mostly the post-2018 stuff except for that tune you did in Dec, 2010. It just tugs at me. Lots of unresolved tension. Love to hear the entire piece or perhaps a reimagination of it (but keep it edgy)!

Thank you so much for sharing this with us! ❤️ It's hard for me to get over the cringe factor enough to really listen to my current singing voice when I'm trying to feminize it, and this is really encouraging.

The only thing that gives me even a bit of hope is it took you 15 years to get this stage. I’ve only sung for 5 years, and only been trying femme vox for a couple months, so I’ll be back in 10 years I guess 😅
