I've been writing down notes on voice feminization, here's what I took away from the video. If anyone has any notes on what I got right or wrong please let me know! Exercises aren't actual 'exercises' they don't strengthen the vocal muscles like lifting a weight would strengthen your arm. What exercises do is decontextualize vocal elements so you can listen to them individually and adjust them to a feminine point to apply to speech. The most important part of doing exercises is actually HEARING what you are doing rather then just doing the motions. Then if the exercise sounds off, do something different until it sounds right, rather then just trying over and over. Don't get distracted by exercises or stuck on them as they are only there to help by isolating elements of the voice, exercises also don't help with the style of speech, so even if you can do them perfectly, you might still not sound how you want until you start using your voice and adjusting it to what you want it to sound like. Don't just go through the motions, be present while doing the exercises.

Oh so THIS is what I'm feeling, I intuited this by accident! Although I am hoping to masculinize my voice instead, but I do want it to feel open and clear and natural. It makes me feel like a have a lot more space to increase my resonance in Edit to add: It felt like I was "opening" the very back of my tongue, that extends down the throat, but I'm now realising that these are my false folds!

This video is really insightful and groundbreaking!!! 🔥 This sharpness quality is such a useful addition to my understanding of voice! ⚔ I found that following along with the exercises was really effective at making the quality more apparent and distinct for me. I will have to continue integrating awareness of this quality into my voice practice! You did such a great job on this video Clover! 😊💜

When a singer pronounces words like "good" as "guid" - is that because of extreme sharpness? I think it's described as the "indie girl" or "cursive" style.
@ffionngrigsbyКүн бұрын
Nope! That's more like turning monophthongs into diphthongs rather than sharpness. I like how you described the difference with different spellings haha. They seem pretty spot-on for the style

A lot of motivational stuff is super abilist and just truisms and bootstrap statements. I'm always glad when real, constructive, original thoughts are presented in ways that don't alienate those who have tried super hard and are struggling with things that arent fixed by being told to "just do it".

please forgive my stupidity, but to make sure I am understanding correctly. To sound more feminine, with every letter, vowel and consonant, we want our tongue closer to the teeth, and then to sound more masculine, the other way around? I understand the T just fine, but I will admit, I got a tad lost when we went to other letters.
@lunaeraruth826Күн бұрын
I might be completely wrong about this, but as I understand it’s more about shifting the balance to where it fits your voice goal. You can get too sharp even for a female voice. While generally yes if I understand correctly female voices are on average sharper you don’t want to overdo it either so it can get so sharp that it starts sounding harsh rather than more feminine. You might be already too sharp to begin with. It’s more about playing with the quality, experimenting with it and find what balance of it works best for your goal, I think. Keep in mind I am just another fellow student and take my interpretation with a heavy grain of salt.

You don't necessarily need to think of it as your tongue moving closer to your teeth, but that can be a helpful idea for a lot of people. Just remember it's more important to find the sound, THEN see what it feels like to make the sound, not the other way around!
@pusheencat77222 сағат бұрын
@@ffionngrigsby good point. The idea of the tongue being near the teeth and then moving back was helpful though.

It's been a while since I've followed your work. How is sharpness different from brightness?
@ffionngrigsby4 күн бұрын
Hi Viv!!! It depends on the range of sensory experience you apply the label 'brightness' to. We've opted for this term because it's a very common perceptual description for students when we ask them to describe/label this change. Brightness is usually a less specific range of quality. People often identify changes in vocal size, weight, pitch, pronunciation, breathiness, and more as contributing to changes in brightness. That said, it really depends on your own experience! If brightness fits this change in sound super distinctly for you, there's nothing wrong with naming it as such!
@vivianriver64504 күн бұрын
@@ffionngrigsby So, you're saying "sharpness" instead of "brightness"? They mean the same thing?
