I learn Portuguese which has nasal vowel sounds that I could not understand how to pronounce so your segment where you pronounced vowels nasally really helped understand everything!

It's difficult trying to work out what is too much nasality when you're from a specific part of the world where nasality is just kind of naturally occurring in the accent. In my case West Scotland Being reassured that it's not the be all, end all and there's a lot more nuance to it is great

The confusion about what is and isn't nasality reminded me of a class I took as part of my education as a Sound Designer. The class centered around a book that dives into the semantics of sound, and tries to establish a common language with which to describe sounds in a general sense. My lecturer said, that describing sound in *general* has almost never been done, and that this book is pretty much the only resource on the matter - Music, speech, song, etc all have their own established languages, but how do you compare a singing voice with the ocean, or the BWOOMP from a movie trailer, or a field recording containing muliple uncorrelated sounds? The book was written in 1999 (Speech, Music, Sound by Theo Van Leeuwen) which is just nuts to me. We've just been sorta unable to talk properly about how things sound, and we still are. My point is that one of the characteristics he comes up with is Nasality - again, not in relation to speech, but to any sound in general. So when people describe those characteristics as "Nasal" it's kinda the best word for it people have. And, as you explain so well, it's completely different from nasality in the context of using your voice. Great video

Wow this is an excellent in-depth video that helped me further my understanding! 💜🔥☺ I knew that people were describing many different sounds as "nasal" that were not actually nasal. It seems people use it as some kind of shorthand or placeholder for describing something about a voice that they think detracts from the femininity. Like you say at the start, I think it's usually "buzzyness" that they're really talking about. I didn't have full confidence in my own ability to consistently differentiate nasality as an auditory quality but if I do some of the explorations in this video I think I will sharpen that perception more. I really liked that you emphasized that more nasality does not mean less feminine in any intrinsic way, like you said there are very clearly feminine voices that are quite nasal. The degree of nasality that might be seen as feminine or "normal" etc. is a question of language and dialect. (as well as maybe other categories like culture or class?) It's also really great that you underlined that parts of this analysis of nasality are specific to English (with plenty of variance on this among dialects within English). Butregardless of the specific language factors for an individual, I'm sure being able to better perceive and play around with this quality will be very helpful for anyone doing voice feminization or other voice training projects. I will look forward to using the same skills you're teaching us to explore here as I practice my voice feminization in French too!

For me I was actually sounding nasally not because of nasality but because I was subconsciously adding vocal twang as well. If you pinch your nose and still sound a bit nasal, look into controlling vocal twang.

Curious ! For a non-American/English native like me (French), the difference is huge. I'm used to your every day voice, and easily understand everything you say and when you change to nasally I'm lost! Your approach to tones and voice frequencies is a lot of work ! And my english is probably bad !

Interesting to start watching this because I recently was told my voice was too hypernasal but it sounded fine to me so maybe it was something else. Hopefully you address both nasality and that general buzziness in this video. (tho still wish I could figure out what's causing my pain when speaking.... It isn't that bad, just a bit of pain/almost dryness when ive been speaking too long and no matter how much water I drink. I don't feel any tension whatsoever when I speak, it feels natural, yet still, pain a bit after speaking for a while) EDIT: Nose test, IT WASNT NASALITY lol EDIT 2: okay so yea just gotta figure out how to get rid of this quality, you called it buzzy, brassy, twangy so I guess I'll start searching around for those terms.

In order to place the voice in the 'mask', many speech therapists use m,n, and ng exercises. However, singing is usually done with a focus on the vowels. Question: how do we reach a placement in the mask if we completely close off the nasal space with the soft palate when singing vowels? Does this rather happen by lifting the larynx(resonance lift) and/or by reducing the weight? In other words, what do we need to do to avoid speaking and singing too much from the throat?

Hello Z. I don't know if you reply to the comments section anymore, but I have a few questions. First of all, I want to say that, at least when I have actually voice trained, your videos have been a major help. That said, I am not great about voice training consistently. Part of that is just my paranoia about getting outed to anyone. Do you have any advice to voice train while you are not out. Coming out is not an option, as I am in an unsupportive environment. Second of all, I was wondering if you still did scholarships for youth in bad environments. I don't remember the exact wording, but I do remember from a livestream a few years ago that you did offer them. Are you still offering them or will you ever offer them again? I would be interested in a lesson if you are going to do them again, but I don't think I can afford it otherwise. Thank you for your time.

One potential way to hide why you're training is to do character impressions. That'll get you a lot of practice with using your voice, even if you have to spend time more of your practice time on voices that aren't where your goal is.

So, TIL, I'm a genetic failure in yet another way. I *literally* can't do that "blocking nose." If I hold my breath, I do that with my diaphragm or throat. I cannot "close my nose," I don't even understand how that works. If I jump into a pool, water doesn't get into my nose, because the nostrils are downwards. If I turn upside down, water will 100% go into my nose. To block bad smells, I have to hold my breath. Breathing through nose only is only possible while holding my nose, or when my nose gets clogged. No wonder why my voice sounds so atrocious.

literally not true. holding your breath literally seals the nose at the same time. if you jump into a pool and water doesnt enter your nose, you clearly have a functional soft palate otherwise there would be no pressurized seal to stop the water from rushing in. water entering while upside down happens to basically everyone. if your soft palate didnt work you wouldnt be able to make a /b/ sound as in Bear. you arent broken. not sure how you reached the conclusion of being a failure here.

​@@TransVoiceLessons I literally cannot prevent air going through my nose, unless I pinch my nose with my fingers. Breathing through my mouth only isn't something I'm able to do. Like, at all. That's not an option. I cannot block any smells without touching my nose. It just isn't something I can do. My voice does sound funny (I was even told that by a doctor specialized in voice therapy), so maybe I cannot say bear in the way I should. I'm Finnish, so /b/ sound isn't something I really ever need in my native language. (Now that I'm trying it, trying to say a soft /b/ without is sounding like /p/ is really hard, and I'm not sure I can do it.) Yes, holding my breath seals my nose, but it ALSO seals my throat, because that's the part of my body that does the sealing. There is no possible way for me to seal my nose *and then keep breathing*. If I'm trying to breath through my mouth only, I cannot do it. Air travels through my nose even in that case. It is literally impossible to keep my nose sealed AND breathe at the same time.
