Hey Coily Companions! Yesterday, on a rainy day, I decide to film the ENTIRE process of installing... I know... TWISTS on my natural hair!!! I'm starting my new regimen today, so I'll be keeping tabs on the way my hair is adapting. In the meantime, all it took was an hour. Already a huge benefit versus braids. But, it's too early to tell. Anyway, I hope the gems in the video added something valuable to your repertoire of natural hair knowledge! I look forward to seeing you guys in another livestream this December! we'll even be having a special guest! So keep an eye on the community posts. Have a happy belated-Thanksgiving and safe Black Friday!

😂I started washing my hair more often now .. I used to wash my hair once every week now every day or 5 days out the week now. 🎉🎉🎉my growth is crazy... All this time and God finally opened my eyes to the truth.. more hydration.. bc the products we use on hair literally cover the pores in our scalp. Washing daily helps to let the hair grow out . Makes sense.. God bless you all❤

🤣you know it’s true because when I was doing wash n gos, washing my hair like every 3 days, it was growing a lot faster. I think that has a lot To do with stimulating the scalp as well, on top of a clean environment. More hydration was def what I’ve been needing. So, thank you for sharing! Water! The key is water. They told us not to get our hair wet, but us 4c girlies MUST embrace the hydration. What's more hydrating then water? First mist your hair with water then use your leave in conditioner and oil at least every other day. Think of your hair like a plant and water, water, water! Do this even if you have a protective style and watch how much your hair grows. It's a must for healthy hair.

I've been natural since 2012. Ive cut my hair low every year until around 2020. That was the year my hair grew pass my shoulders but was too thin from all the weave wearing and hair dying I did that year. It took two years to grow the dye out. Now, it's thicker, healthier and pass my shoulders again. 12 long years and I'm still short.
@CoilyCode2 сағат бұрын
That tells me if you keep doing what you’re doing, you’re going to reach very long hair in less than 2 years Nicole! I felt like I was cutting my hair too much in 2021 😮💨 and I was trying to figure out a regimen to stay consistent on between 2022-2023. Now I’m finally reaching that stage where I’m finding what works and just stick to it.

Going natural alone doesn’t do much for length retention. 1. Keep your ends oiled and buttered. 2. Cleanse gently in sections with a gentle cleanser. 4. Finger detangle. 5. Keep hair stretched. 6. Wear low-manipulation protective styles without added hair. 7. No tight styles. 8. Avoid hair ties. 9. Sleep on silk or satin pillow cases. 10. Avoid hair color.

#5, #6, and #7 are most important, in my opinion. My hair is longer than bra strap length, and I’ve never worn a “wash-n-go” (I always do stretched styles = braid out or twist-out”); also, I’ve never worn wigs or braids with added hair. When not worn out, I wear my hair in my own version of mini-twists, which is 24-28 total twists- only using my own hair. Good luck, Ladies. You can indeed have long, healthy hair - Type 4 hair is beautiful (as is all curly/coily strands).

I’ve been natural for about 9 years and I have 1 loc in the back of my head I started 9 years ago. The loc is all the way pass my bum while my other hair is only at my bra strap. I know that the loc is longer because locks don’t shed and retain all its length, but I just wish the rest of my hair would do the same.

My hair stayed at shoulder length for a while, until I started moisturizing it twice a day. I always start my day wetting my hair and then layering leave in and oil, and then in the evening I once again oil my hair to strengthen it. I wash my hair once my scalp starts itching, which may be after a week or so. Just once though, so my hair doesn’t get stripped by the shampoo. Since I have high porosity hair, I use Greek yogurt every weekend as a protein treatment, and then always follow up with a deep conditioner. My split ends have reduced since starting this method. I got the idea from my fingernails, as I oil them 2-3 times a day, which keeps them strong and flexible. I always oil my hair 2 times a day now, and it has made it stronger and more flexible. I wet my hair daily in the shower to keep it hydrated. When I shampoo I since I only do it once, I do not rinse it out unless I’ve been massaging it into my scalp and hair for about 4 minutes so the shampoo can break up the buildup.

So im in theory mode right now, but I believe what grows our hair isn't products. That is merely an aid to manageability. What grows our hair is health and more specifically technique. I also think there are rules that we can change and ones we must implement, like washing and conditioning, which is mandatory. Yet deciding between using moose or gel is temporary. I am, however, of the belief blow drying our once to twice a month can be helpful due to the lasting stretch. I think trimming should be every 6 - 8 months. Also, I think from water to product to oil, you have to experiment with amounts because it can become a speed bump in your journey.
@CoilyCode2 күн бұрын
I agree! It’s really the manageability and handling of the hair that makes the most difference. I love stretching my hair with heat, because of that stretch. It is long term, at least if I’m not adding any gels to my hair. But your theory seems plausible.

New subbie! I used to try and follow the other ladies' methods. One month later had a moment of clarity! I remember how as a child my wash day consisted of washing, conditioning, greasing, and having plaits in my hair for a week until wash day again. I now do this weekly sometimes switching up my regime. Weekly I use savila and oil my scalp and use whipped shea butter and essential oils. Monthly I use greek yogurt and Ayurveda treatments. Just recently I roller set my hair twice and now this week I twisted my hair. Scalp massages are helpful and blended ginger root. Thank you for sharing your journey. ✨️

With my hair, I learned that less is more. Using less products and manipulation created easy wash days which simplified things for me. My hair is so soft after doing green house effect on it. (Saturating it with water/aloe vera water, coating with oil of choice, putting a cap/bag, and then covering with a scarf for hours or overnight). I do that and it makes detangling, wash days or whatever easier.

So my sister used to wash your hair like every 5 days because she heard washing your hair works more often especially for the European people someone suggested that to her and she did that for a while for a long time but she didn't like that routine then she switched to washing her hair every 3 weeks because that fit her better and she also Incorporated using aloe vera on her hair and avocado mask every time she washed her hair and then every two months she would do the apple cider vinegar rinse and her hair is down to her butt. And I've recently gone back to being natural I've done it a couple times but me personally I like short hair we have thick hair runs in our family my mother is a mixed woman from Trinidad and Tobago she's mixed with Venezuelan my father is a black American man but my hair type is type 4 while my sister who I mentioned earlier she is a type 3 girl personally I like to shave my hair every so often because I sweating my hair especially in the summertime I think my hair would probably be longer if I didn't cut it so much or shave my head off I just went natural 2022 and right now it's about shoulder length if I blow dried it straight I can't say that I'm looking for the longest hair if I'm going to be honest when my hair was the longest it's ever been I just put it in a ponytail I was never really creative with it
@CoilyCode3 күн бұрын
See, if I had thick hair, I’m not sure if my sentiments for long hair would be the same 🤣. That is a whole other feat on its own. I do think there is a benefit to washing your hair often, but only if you’re doing wash n gos. To wash your hair everyday and have to style it would be counterproductive. However, my hair seems to achieve more length when I leave it alone. I don’t like having a dirty scalp so soon as I feel a persistent itch, that’s when I wash it. I notice it increases when I sweat. It’s actually refreshing to hear someone who isn’t aiming for length. As long as you’re learning your hair, that’s really all that matters. Thanks for sharing. My grandfather was from Trinidad & Tobago 😁😁😁

Great video Sis! There’s definitely balance needed between protecting our strands and wearing them out and enjoying the hard work, no matter the length. I know for me, I’ve only worn my hair out once in two years and that’s wild when I think about it! 😂😅BUT, I’ve been trying to nurse my hair from a setback in 2022 and then just see how much length I could retain with plaits, and now twists. Through the process, I’m relearning my hair, what products I can and can’t use, and what my ultimate goal is. I do plan on wearing my hair out at least once a month next year, if the Lord says the same. Another thing to consider is life changes. Moving to a different environment regarding weather, the quality of water, hormonal changes when having children or menopause, stress from unexpected events, the list goes on! 😅 Your hair looks healthy, and the length will come for all of us if we keep going, no matter how we change up our regimen. Observing what our hair needs is so key…you’re spot on! As usual! Thanks for sharing. 🥰💕

I’m glad I went natural in the 90s before KZbin. I learned how to take care of my hair through trial and error, but my hair was down to my shoulders in a couple year afterwards. I know that my hair is unique and what works for one person might not work for me. Also, “natural” hair comes in many textures, so there is no one size fits all.
@CoilyCode6 минут бұрын
So true!!! I’m curios Maki, what were you doing in the 90s to care for your hair?
@Mita75384 күн бұрын
Hey lady - Love your channel. I’m watching your video while cleaning and can see you are using the products but I also noticed you pull your hair quite a bit when you get to the front of your head. I know for me when I first went natural, my hair began to recede. Scared me to pieces. I now fall back on pulling AT ALL in the front and my hairline is like it was when I had a chemical. Not that my hair routine would benefit you, but here it is: - 100% Organic Jojoba Oil (I put fresh rosemary, 10 coffee beans, 30 whole dried Alma seeds in the bottle and let it sit for 2 months. Think cold press-ish). Once I’m reading to use it, I put some in a small dropper bottle and add 100% Organic Australian Tee Tree oil. For my scalp only - Water bottle with brewed Fenugreek seeds - Shea Moisture Kids Curling Buttercream (add 100% Organic Castor to the jar) I wash my hair almost weekly. Sometimes I use a clarifying shampoo on my mids and lengths only to prevent scalp damage. I do that before following up with a moisturizing shampoo (using my scalp massager) and then conditioner and deep conditioner, every wash. I never skip this step. I have high porosity, thick 4C hair, I need this protection. Depends on how my scalp has been feeling, I’ll put a small amount of Sulfur 8 on four parts in my hair and massage before I begin adding my products listed above. My hair is super dry. Like desert dry, so I moisturize every other day. Oh and now I’m watching another one of your videos while I type this extremely long comment and I see you’re using protein treatments. How is that going? Are you still using that with the clarifying shampoo? The scientific consensus is protein treatments are harmful ONLY FOR low porosity hair. How is that going?
@CoilyCode4 күн бұрын
Are you a natural hair guru in disguise??? Totally here for your detailed routine! Thanks for sharing. Regarding the pulling at the front of my hair -I definitely aim to not add unnecessary tension, I promise you I was being gentle but taut. However you’re absolutely right. We don’t want to stress the tresses! As for the protein treatments, I haven’t been able to do them much due to life changes. But, as things are settling, I should get back to doing them more often. However, I didn’t experience an adverse reactions to it with my low-porosity hair. Science isn’t the gospel truth in my opinion. Some scientific insights are helpful, and others, I don’t give too much weight. I’ve seen low porosity naturals do fine with protein. It’s really a balancing act. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to share your routine and feedback! ♥️🌸🌺😍

I wash my hair once a week but rinse it everyday. Sometimes every other day, and use a light oil afterwards to moisturise. Our hair needs regular hydration and oil (in this order). Shampoo is too drying, hence only weekly. If you have hard water, which is also drying, use vinegar to bring the pH lower.( ~ph5 or 6), Example a tablespoon in 400ml of water and use this as your rinse. Buy litmus paper off amazon test the ph of water.

So friend, did you send your flu expedited over the Caribbean waters to me in South Florida?? 🤧😂 Whew chile, I was DOWNN this thanksgiving. The flu has a way of stopping everything in it’s tracks and hair is the last thing that gets moving on the to do list lol😅 Love the tips! Gosh, if we knew then what we know now then…. well… we wouldn’t have the experience to guide others right? And I’m sure so many are encouraged and helped with this information. Reminds me of the scripture, Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Nice to see that you’re trying twists again. I’ve been doing twist for while now. I wish I could remember the KZbinr’s name who inspired me to do twists. Twists doesn’t last long like braids but I don’t mind because I want to refresh my hair about every two weeks. And because twists doesn’t take long to do it’s usually not a big deal. Plus if I want to take it out to wear as a twist out for a nicer outing I can. I would suggest when you first do it to try to stretch it. That’s what that nugget that KZbinr taught me. While it’s damp I encourage it to dry stretched. It lessens the tangles. 💗💗❤️💗❤️. Perhaps flexi rods or rollers or even Bantu knots. I put mine in Bantu knots or a bun.

Oh nooooo!!!!!!! 🫢🥴So sorry!! The technology is really getting advance. Imagine that 🤣 that’s awful you missed thanksgiving too 😭😭😭 (although I was well, thanksgiving is an American holiday so it was just a regular day in Jamaica 🤣).girrrrrrllllll hahaha hopefully your hair is in some twists now, at least that’ll keep the tangles in line. I LOOOOVE that you used that verse because it really helps bring everything into perspective so we don’t feel shame for the mistakes we made. We were all just figuring it out and now the future generations will have all they need to do even greater things. Sis! When I tell you the joy I had doing these twists!!!!! I didn’t do them too small either, but they’re so much fun to install. I love my mini braids but I really couldn’t justify doing a style that pains me to do 🤣. It took me an hour versus 4.5 hours. That’s a good tip! I also have been watching more ladies who do twists as their main style picking up some ideas along the way. And like you, I like to refresh my hair more often too. It’s a way to enjoy it more too. I hope you get well soon! At least before the leftovers expire? 😭

Girl I wasn’t missing out on that Thanksgiving meal, you kidding me, only once a year I gotta have it. The portion size was much smaller but I had to have a taste 😂. @CoilyCode2 күн бұрын
I may have a few suggestions. But first, what are you struggling with exactly?
@tracyberry36172 күн бұрын
@ I am struggling with patience. I am not good at styling my hair it is short but long enough to two strand twist . I had locs for eights and I have been trying to re learn my hair . I suppose I need to listen to my hair and scalp ie when to wash it when ti it it needs moisturizer or protein
@CoilyCode2 күн бұрын
I’d just keep it super simple. Since twists remind me of locs, just two strand twist your hair or braid, which ever you’re able to do, and wash it when your hair and scalp gets dirty. And you’ll figure out the frequency by observing your hair and scalp. Most naturals have a schedule, like once a week, once a month etc. I wash whenever my hair gets dirty or scalp starts getting unbearably itchy. If two weeks doesn’t work for you, then that’s okay. There really are no rules to taking care of your own hair. Ppl like to wait a long time before washing because that’s less manipulation on your hair strands. But, you can still wash it as often as you need to in order to maintain moisture and a clean scalp. No rules :) you just have to learn your hair as you say. And maybe you’ll need to style it more often in order to do that. OR you can buy a mannequin head with natural hair and practice on it. In terms of patience, that’s going to take time. Patience comes from struggling to wait. You don’t develop patience unless you need to have patience. So when you get impatient, you need to remind yourself of your goals, what do you ultimately want, and what’s the sacrifice you’re willing to make. Hair doesn’t grow overnight, but with time, you’ll see the growth. 😊

Shanita, don’t judge me but 🥲I used to be one of those 3 months lol. I honestly didn’t like it because even though I retained length, my scalp was so dirty and the buildup in my braids was disgusting. I lost my confidence leaving the house knowing my hair was dirty. So not anymore 😆

@CoilyCode21 сағат бұрын
Mini braids were actually my first love! I love them so much and did retain length. The issue is my regimen didn’t involve moisture so I got a lot of breakage from brittleness. Plus since my hair is fine, the takedown was BRUTAL. I do like medium braids. I just wanted to give my hair something new since twists aren’t as time consuming. But I’ll definitely return back to them one day. I have a mini braids playlist to show you how much I loved them haha

I guarantee your hair will be the longest it has ever been if you get locs. This is because people with our hair texture flourish with minimal detangling and max moisture. Just a thought! From a girl who had shoulder length hair her entire life until getting locs that grew my hair all the way to my tail bone in 6 years! I promise, I’m not lying to you sis ❤.
@CoilyCode4 күн бұрын
Oh I believe you!!! Most women who have locs have long hair haha. 😆 and I’m sure it would work wonders for my hair. Who knows what the future holds? 🥰 thanks for sharing :) I think that’s why we tend to emulate locs with braids and twists.
@sable71143 күн бұрын
Unfortunately so much of that hair length is shed hair trying to get out of there. Can you imagine shedding 100 hairs per day for years and your hair is locked. If someone took the time to actually try to detangle that then you would see the true length of the hair. I don't doubt that it would be longer but I think not quite as long as it appears and it would probably be very damaged my opinion.
@maatx40273 күн бұрын
@ I’ve had multiple sets and shed hair is a huge part of locs, but with proper takedown, I maintained over 70% of my length. Not to mention the length when stretched is much longer than I could have ever gotten as a loose natural.

Some women just have short growth phases. I’m a licensed cos, and you can see in small children how every individual has a different growth rate and phase. My hair is 17inches and my child’s is almost 30inches, while my mother and sister have never had more than shoulder length. A great regimen with low tension and low manipulation is great, but if your growth phase is short, it is what it is.
@CoilyCode2 күн бұрын
This may be true, but no one really ever knows. No one has studied human hair growth speed to the extent that this is definite. A lot of growth has to do with lifestyle, genetics, and haircare practices, variables that have not been considered when discussing hair growth phases. But at least for me, when I sum up all of my habits and seasons of this journey, my length is only because of mismanaging my time. That’s evident by the years of documentation I’ve done on my hair. My hair would’ve been past my waist if I had been focused and knew what to do in 2017. I guess if you’re happy with that, than I can’t say anything to change it. Thank you for sharing your wisdom!
@aielianna2 күн бұрын
I feel like this is backed by the fact that some people do not take care of their hair at all and it still grows long. In my opinion if you have resilient hair coupled with a long growth phase then you have won the jackpot. People with long hair don’t have to do anything in order to obtain it cause most likely their hair will grow long regardless of the conditions. That’s why I feel like people shouldn’t be trying to do the most to get long hair. If it’s healthy but it’s not long, so be it 🤷🏾♀️

I've watched you style your hair. You're losing it due to bantu knots. The knots are too tight. Try bantu knots it loosely as it will keep you from pulling your edges out. Just a suggestion. Also, you don't have to wash it so often. Wash and condition every 2 weeks.

Some ppl can’t go every two weeks. It’s not a matter of fact. Everyone’s body is different. I think if it was that simple, all of us would have long hair and there’d be no such thing as regimens lol. And if you’ve watched her other videos, she hardly does Bantu knots. Never does them for long term styling. They’re literally in for a day and sometimes less.
