Finally a review from sombody who is taking the bike for just what it is. I say to people... if you are going to test or review a bike.. cast aside all your preconceived ideas and clear your mind. Take it for how it makes you feel and what it is. For example, we often hear.... it doesn't have have shaft drive... so what.... that's how it was designed. Don't keep keep referring to shaft drive. Shaft drive has its virtues and its problems. I ride a GS and I know the 1290 is now a better bike, I accept that. So to all those GS peeps out there....Get over it. Thank you for a brilliant review.

Hi Sam. Just got back from three days and 1100 mile round trip in the lake district. Had its first service last Wednesday, Thursday morning off the 360 miles to the lakes. My thoughts on the bike. Comfort was good for a couple of hours then stopped for fuel, acc brilliant on the motorway effortless crusing. I was getting 58 mpg, I have mine in auto suspension sport mode. Screen is fine or me I'm 5"8. Rained quite a lot and had total confidence in the wet it handled brilliantly, only issue was on the honnister pass over a cattle grid where the back came round, but it sorted itself out, unlike my underpants. I like you will keep this bike for years it really is that good.
@SamVBikes3 жыл бұрын
Haha chuckled at the "unlike my underpants" part of that!! I agree with you! It's an awesome bit of kit. KTM have just text me this weekend saying my comfort seat has arrived so will get a vid up and give you an update if its worth a buy. Need to get myself back up to the Lake District!

About the starting of the engine: yes, it seems it takes some time to launch, but I think it's on purpose. It leaves the time for the oil to run properly everywhere before to allow ignition. There is a neat video from "Tyrrell's Classic Workshop" that explains ti well. It's about "how to warm up your classic car engine the correct way", and explains how the electronics evolved to allow for slower startup procedures with time... For lubrification. At first, like you, I was always wondering if that was the starter struggling, or a weak battery (we know how KTM's electronics can be sensitive to a low voltage), but I think this is the reason: just good engineering. My 990 SMT did that. My previous 1290 SAS did that. My current 1290 SAS does that.

Engine start revolutions is a function of both the engine management and tuning, the ecu needs to see the crank position and cam postions so at least two revolutions plus the manufacturer may give it a few more revolutions to build oil pressure to save the bearings 👍
@SamVBikes2 жыл бұрын
Yes true! It was an odd thing to get used to as most bikes just go with the standard 2 revolutions. Having said that, since I was listening out for it, I noticed most of the bigger power and CC bikes tend to turn over an extra time too

I have a 2021 KTM 890 Adventure with now 250 miles on it and it has been nothing but problems. It takes 3 - 8 attempts to get it started when cold, it stalls after a few seconds requiring another start. Many false neutrals, problems with down shifting not working (even while moving can’t go from 2nd to 1st). Indicator lights popping up with a generic “immobilizer failure”. The GPS app is HORRIBLE, like map quest level directions. That is, if the directions work at all … randomly disconnects making me pull over and restart the bike. I bought a Garmin GPS instead. I’ve taken it to the shop multiple times and each time they say this is a normal with KTM. Would have been nice if they told me this when I was buying it. I’m not happy at all, and just started building a lemon law case.
@SamVBikes2 жыл бұрын

It doesn't on this bike - Road, Rain, Sport, Off Road and then Rally mode if you opt for the tech pack. You get a lot of options in Rally mode so I guess thats closest to the track mode

Hi Sam just about to buy one but been put off a bit by some vids talking about the vibration. You mentioned it a little so I presume you did not think that it was bad ?
@SamVBikes Жыл бұрын
It is a vibey bike, but no more so than any other big-bore twin cylinder adventure bike. You quickly work out the best gears to be in - same thing with an inline-4 Vs a twin etc. Don't labour the engine and the vibes are way less! I've just done my 30,000 mile review on this bike and vibes weren't even a point of discussion if that helps! I'd definitely say ride it if you haven't already

Hey! Yes I've done 42k miles on it now. There's a 30k mile review later on my channel going through a lot of these questions!

@SamVBikes thanks for your response.i shall definitely check out more tedious content. Also the bike I'm looking at is £15,499 but it dosnt have the tech pack included.should I purchased this?.have you done a service cost video yet?. Live to ride/ride to live :0)

Yes definitely buy the tech pack. Normally you can get it thrown in or at a reduced price. Yes service cost is all in the 30k mile review

@SamVBikes good morning Sam. So I have the honda nc750x dct, and I'm really thinking g about the ktm adventure.most of my riding is commuting and that's about 1 hour 20 minutes to work.should I trade in my bike amd go for the ktm.? Your advise is much appreciated. Have a good day. Troy :0)

@Getagripbicycleworks Morning! My commute is now nearly 2 hours, 80 miles each way and I use the KTM for that. It will be more expensive to run than the NC. My partners NC does 70mpg odd, and a set of tyres lasts for 10k miles or more. The KTM does around 50-55mpg, and I normally get 4k out of a rear tyre, but that's mainly because I like the throttle! Service int are 9k miles which is a little higher than the NC. I really enjoy the bike on the long commutes because it makes it less tedious, plus it's a big comfy adv bike with heated seats, cruise control, rider modes etc. So there are definitely pros and cons to both, but with my distance, I wouldn't go for anything that doesn't excite me! I've done 44k miles now and it's still going very strong

Sam - I'm roughtly 5'8.5" would the bike be too tall?
@SamVBikes2 жыл бұрын
Not if you get the tech pack with the ability to lower the rear preload. My dad's ridden it at 5ft8 and he can get both feet down!

If you are going to ride like a #$*@, don’t do it here. As he proceeds to do it there himself.

Fair point. I would say momentarily spinning up the rear wheel on a long, straight bit of green lane with plenty of visibility, is vastly different to racing down them at 60mph with no regard for what might be around the corner though. If you're doing the latter, that's what I would class as riding like a knob

Pointless advertisements beforehand complete waste of everyone's time

I assume you're talking about adverts before my video starts as I had no adverts in the video. I have no control over the adverts unfortunately!
