I love my flail mower. I went with a hammer type blade and its been nice for running over bushes and things like that. Recently been thinking about getting a hydraulic offset y-blade flail as well just for field mowing but haven't made up my mind yet.

Yes, but the convenience of doing it from the cab and not getting tore up by wasps is nice. In the mean time the pole saw is getting brought out when it cools off some.

Ya, I hated my Caroni for a couple of seasons - it left a lot of standing straw in my mixed weed pasture. I came from 20yrs with a 40hp Ferguson and flat mower ...where engine RPMs were casual. This flail drove me nuts. My JD 1070D was similarly operated as the Ferguson. As a kid I plowed with a Johnny Popper, so high RPMs are spooky. It probably took me 3yrs to look at the PTO range indicator on the tach to see I needed to get the 1070 screaming @ ~2500rpm. Woah?! This Caroni now lays down some fine lines! ..and without belching wads of weed like the flat-decked mower. I also like the offset so I can get a little closer to the edges of our ditches. I am old enough now to stop worrying if the engine will throw a rod. Press on, eh!? Jim

All mowers are designed for 540 RPM to get the proper blade tip speed. That's usually 2600 rpms on most diesels.

Thanks for your earlier reply regarding 2" saplings. I am trying to figure out the PTO Horse Power of the John Deere 4044R. Would you happen to have this information?
@TKCL

34hp for gear drive 33hp for hydrostatic drive.

@@TKCL many thanks, I really appreciate it. I have a dealer telling me if he used the same calculations that Kubota use, then it would be PTO 52hp...
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 жыл бұрын
Not at all, PTO hp is always lower than engine hp due to all the losses in hydraulic or gear drive to transfer the energy back to the pto gearbox. It's impossible to increase HP from what the engine can produce.

How does the flail mower cope with mulching 2" saplings?
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 жыл бұрын
That's a bit much for this particular model. You would want a heavy duty model with hammers for that kind of work.

Your information on the JD 4044 tractor was really helpful. Do you have an opinion on the Kubota L4600HD tractor vis a vis the JD 4044R tractor? I am really struggling with the comparison. I have all the energy ratings in my comparison model, and the weight of each machine. Now I am struggling with which is the better machine over a projected 5 years of ownership.

Sorry, I don't have experience with the Kubota so I can't give a honest comparison.

I have a Kubota 3710 and it's been perfect. No problems at all. It's 4 wheel drive too. I needed to replace a front tire from it having a low tire which cracked on the sidewall.😊

How does it do in brush. How big of brush can it mulch?
@TKCL
@TKCL 2 жыл бұрын
Does well, just slow down like any other mower. I'd stay around 1 inch saplings or less. If your constantly mowing thick brush, stick to a rotary mower.

Do you have knives or hammers on your flail mower? Nice cut!
@TKCL

Y blades, not hammers. Best of both worlds in my opinion, cuts grass ok and does well in moderate brush.

What do you know about the John Deere flail mower in comparison to the Caroni?
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Never used the John Deere flail so I can't say. But I do have a Caroni Flail and can compare that to the caroni finish. If you look back at one of my first videos on this channel, I do an in-depth comparison between finish and flail mowers.

Does you flail ride on the skids and roller or mostly the roller. Trying to get mine adjusted properly. Was thinks of letting it ride on the roller and the forward 1/2 of the skids. But not sure it does not say in manual I downloaded.
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 жыл бұрын
Use to be skids and always dug in. Then I discovered the roller is also adjustable. I adjusted it down to the same height as the skids and everything runs much better now.
@TKCL

FYI I always adjust the top link out to allow the flail to roll back more on the roller. That really helps

If you have y knives do you ever sharpen them how long do they last long
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 жыл бұрын
I do have them and probably only sharpen once a year. I prefer dull rounded over blades for brush, they don't chip as easily. If I were constantly mowing grass with the flail I'd sharpen a lot more often.

Hello! I went to trade my jd3520 in for a tractor like yours. Test drove it and loved it. But the dealer pushed me to buy a 5 series tractor so I left with my tractor. Have you driven a 5 series tractor? If so do you ever wish you got one over your tractor?
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 жыл бұрын
I came from a 3720, almost identical to yours. If you want bells/whistles and hydrostatic drive, stick with the 4 series. It's a lighter, smaller tractor which is easier to maneuver and better on yards. The only reason I'd ever go with a 5 series is if I was farming or doing a lot of field work, as in discing a lot. I absolutely don't regret not getting a 5 series and they were cheaper too. The 4 series is a big jump up from the 3 series in stability and power. Don't get me wrong, I loved my 3720, but the 4066 is in another league.
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention 5 series loaders lift a lot more, that be the only other reason to get one. I love my 4066R and absolutely have to have hydrostatic for the convenience.
