ARTISTRY ON VIDEO - to you blokes and generations before. In the early 80's in a country town, my service club got a 1920's tractor restarted after weeks of sourcing tyres (English spelling) from farmers as well as a few weeks of constant lubricant soaking before start date. Worked within say 30 seconds on first try. It was part of our town's yearly parade that year. Preserve, preserve.

Good video. Its clear that you're being honest when you say that this is the first start in all those years. Its annoying how lots of people on KZbin with old engines claim that the engine "hasn't started in X years" only for the engine to start up like it ran 5 minutes before. You can tell that those people are just lying since almost nothing starts up on the first try after a few years.

I'm taking an educated guess here that it is a half--breed engine. This was originally a steam engine that was converted to petroleum from an engineered kit way back in the day. I've seen a few of them on KZbin and at antique engine shows here in WNY. How can you tell? Its has 2 connecting rods. 1st rod runs straight from the piston to a set of slides or ways. 2nd connecting rod runs from the slide to the crank. I could be wrong but I think that was a steam engine originally converted with a factory kit. Nice engine either way, steam or diesel.
@themadmailler7 жыл бұрын
this is a two stroke gas powered oilfield engine, neither steam, diesel, or halfbreed. the reason it resembles a steamer is the crosshead and piston rod. it has this because the back half of the cylinder is enclosed and is used as the intake side of the two-stroke cycle. halfbreeds worked and looked the same way, but as you said were conversions. this one was manufactured this way.

Not half as much fun as this, this has to be one of the best start up vids I have seen you put it all in warts and all goodonya . Can the flywheels turn both clockwise and counter clockwise like some of the old John Deere diesels?
@themadmailler7 жыл бұрын
this engine, being a two stroke, can run either direction but they should run in the standard direction because running backwards will put excessive strain on the upper crosshead rails. Also as far as i know the JD diesels are 4 stroke, and thus cannot run backwards. maybe you're thinking of the Lanz and Field Marshall hotbulb diesel tractors? those are two strokes and can run backwards.
@fmanh7 жыл бұрын
themadmailler to the best of my knowledge 4 strokes can go both ways a s well (old mechanical diesels) it's even earned about in the tractor manuals I use for some old tractors. It's not good for them, the lubrication system and air filter won't really work properly leading to all sort of trouble. But the machine will appear to be running for a while until it seizes....
@themadmailler7 жыл бұрын
nope, valve timing, injection timing, etc will be backwards. two strokes can run backwards because the piston is the valve. There are some 4 stroke marine diesels that are reversible, but i believe they have a mechanism of some sort that reverses the cam timing.
