I’m a ASB tango just thought I’d add my experience. Depending on the unit if phases need to be quickly pushed out you might do more than 9-5. For example we often opted out of pt and worked a straight 12 hour shift 0600-1800. During phases many of the soldiers received separate rations due to not really having time to go to the DFAC. This was a good way to earn extra money. We also had night shifts to keep 24 hours of maintenance going.

True. It isn't the same as a civilian job. I was a 68B1P which at time was a turbine engine repairer. If we got done early we couldn't go home because " the duty day goes until 5pm. But if there were still missions out it was "the duty day ends when they get back" . I understand that the mission takes priority. But we were never given ANY compensation. Even though all you wanted to do was get some sleep

Senior tangos and NCOs are there for you. They will give you shit sometimes, but it's to make you better. If you can get on a phase team right away, do it. You'll learn a shit ton of maintenance. Before you know it, you'll be that Specialist that the new guys gravitate to. Be good to them, teach them. Graduation has been opened up to family again and we now have family day the day before graduation. 15T at 160th SOAR is Special Operations not Special Forces. You taxi people to and from missions, rescue ops in the most dangerous environments, as well as provide overwatch. The 15U/15T are the “Door Gunners” and the 68W is the Special Operations Flight Medic. But other than them and the pilot, no one else is really going on mission. Even 15T/15U/68W have to be mission qualified and pay your dues long before they get in the helicopter. I found out a 42A was telling people he was special operations Nightstalker. It’s pretty comical to hear those things. Yes he was a nightstalker, no he never went inside the bird on missions.

I've heard mixed statements about the availability of the MOS. I know the Army needs a lot of Tangos though. Right now, at our company in AIT there's 300+ of us compared to 50-100 of the other aviation MOS's, and we get a new class and have a graduating class every week. And as far as I know for crew chiefs, it's based on your PT scores, and your work as a Tango. Do quality work, do more than the minimum, and wait till your name gets called for a flight slot.
