Jim, your videos are addictive. Love the editing, the music, the story lines, and most of all, seeing some of these amazing interstate highways. So much has been written and reported on the disruptive nature of interstate highways. Not suggesting this isn't true (my own hometown included) But watching your videos shows the amazing engineering and work that went into construction. In my city (Syracuse) there has been much hand wringing over what to do about I81 through downtown. Your vids have given me a whole new look at this impressive system of high speed roads, along with introducing me to a new guitarist who's music will be ringing in my ears whenever I'm on a road trip. Keep up the great work!
@Freewayjim4 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, thank you for watching and for the kind and thoughtful comment, I'm glad you enjoy the videos. yeah I've heard about I-81 in Syracuse, tearing down these stretches of Interstate through cities big and small is a short-sighted idea IMO while improving them from an efficiency and aesthetic standpoint would be the way to go, then again I'm biased :).

Nice route, I think you hit all of the (currently open) tunnels in the area! I'm a big fan of the engineering for that entire Mercer Street interchange. great rockin' video, gonna put it up there with your Colorado i70 Canyon video. I absolutely got "virtually" lost in this one - and as a layperson it gives me a sense of the complexity the engineers must face with all that terrain, weaving tunnels and bridges around mountains and water. Only so many places to build, and apparently with the ongoing tech boom Seattle recently super ceded Boston as the most expensive place to buy real estate not in California.

Great video! Found this one very interesting - we don't have separate "express lanes" in the UK at all AFAIK, so it was interesting to see them in action. It's an interesting idea - am I right in thinking they are essentially toll lanes on highways that are otherwise free to drive on? I'm assuming they have some kind of transponder system and an occupancy restriction?
@Freewayjim8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, these express lanes are free (some other cities have them from the 1960's), most built before the 1990's are. Express lanes being built now are essentially toll lanes, we have some under construction where I live in Atlanta. In most cases you have to have a transponder to use them.
@MrWilldude38 жыл бұрын
Ah - watched this again and I get it now - noticed that they're reversible. It's an ingenious idea and seems very cool, though I imagine it presents its fair share of challenges in construction and maintenance.

My ex wife and I honeymooned in Seattle because we didn't want to go to a stereotypical honeymoon place. Man, did we ever pick the right city. As soon as the DC-10 landed (it was mid-90's), we knew we'd made the right choice. We stayed downtown so we wouldn't need to rent a car for the entire time and did a ton of walking around the area. As I noted earlier, we both loved the city. So much, in fact, we decided we wanted to live there after three days and began to look for housing and jobs! Unfortunately, with our limited time in town and her difficulty in finding a job (I had a job that I could find most anywhere) it didn't materialize. We did, however, keep looking when we returned home to Iowa but it just didn't pan out, unfortunately. I still to this day long to go back and I'd love to take my kids to see the city I fell in love with. One sorta funny note: We talked to some locals about neighborhoods, etc and mentioned that we really wanted to move out to SEA. More than one person asked, "are you from California?". Of course, being from Iowa our answer was "no, we're visiting from Iowa" and the response was always "Oh, ok. You're .ore than welcome to come to Seattle." Apparently, Californians were fleeing to Seattle in droves at the time and, being provincial as we all are sometimes, the locals were not happy. Thanks for posting these. Brings back a ton of memories.
@Freewayjim8 жыл бұрын

Cool story, never heard of anyone honeymooning in Seattle but it is a nice city with lots to do. Definitely take your kids. You can even see how much the city's changed from the 90s. I lived in Washington in the 90s and remember driving past the Kingdome on the freeway. Well needless to say the skyline has changed significantly with all the new buildings. I guess the only constant is change. See Seattle again before it changes too much.
@frankyu5537 жыл бұрын
+jmurphy1973 This reminded me of Oregonians getting fed up with Californian transplant. A famous governor of Oregon, Tom McCall I believe, said famously, "Come visit Oregon anytime, but for god's sake, don't move here." Being a Californian native, I find it funny that Oregonians and Seattle residents would prefer people from elsewhere than California even though we're similar; I guess people just want more diversity among newcomers.
@FoxWeaver7 жыл бұрын
It's less the Northern Californians we dislike, more the ones from SoCal. Impatient, driving up property taxes/house prices, razing entire areas and destroying favorite places (some even historical) to make high-rises that no one in their right mind can afford, and pretty damn unsafe driving. Not to mention Californian companies investing and only paying minimum wage. By all means, please visit. However, if you're going to live here, contribute and help out instead of being part of the problem.
@CascadianPatriot7 жыл бұрын

I wonder why the exit sign for I 90 says O.K.

Kinda cool because just last month they closed (permanently) the express lanes on the I-90 bridge (Don't worry, the ones on I-5 aren't going anywhere!) so they can turn the former express bridge into a light rail line. Weird to watch this video and see cars on the "middle" bridge now. Haha!

OMG! You played Muse!!!!! Not sure what they have to do with Seattle, but thanks!

They don't, the song fit and we were listening to it while filming. Not every song has to be local specific. Got more Muse coming in future videos.

Sweet! They're one of my favorite bands, and "Stockholm Syndrome" did go perfectly with that part of your vid. There's one Seattle legend we've yet to hear. I'm hoping he's in one or both of your last two Seattle videos.

Who are you thinking of? ...if it's Hendrix, no can do, the music is not safe to use but there is a Hendrix cover in the next video. I do have two Seattle artists left in the next two videos but they probably aren't who you'd expect.

Yes, it was Hendrix...I didn't realize his music wasn't "safe", but that's cool.

The cover I used is pretty good and fit. The fact it is a little longer than the original tune was a good thing too.
