You guys are awesome for covering all of the Brat Pack movies! I meant to comment on your Pretty in Pink vid; I really enjoyed it. I agree with how badly this movie has aged. It hit me maybe about 10 years ago or so when I rewatched it with one of my guy friends who had never seen it and he immediately commented on the racism surrounding Long Duk Dong's character. The actor has said that he received a lot of backlash from the Asian community at the time and years later for consenting to play the role. I actually also read an article that Molly Ringwald wrote for a blog a few years ago about how she watched her movies with her daughter for the 1st time and realized how inappropriate almost all of them were with this one being the worst one. The 80's were definitely a different time! Are you going to tackle Weird Science next?

I had heard that about Gede but that Molly Ringwald thing is interesting. It’s amazing that anyone thought this was a good idea. It’s insane how bad it is today. Weird Science, Less Than Zero and The Outsiders will all be coming soon!

There also was anti-Hungarian propaganda in this as things like "bohunk" and allusions to "weird foreigners" were brought up a lot. It may not be POC but it's still dicrimination nobody talks about.

I can tell you something. All comedies about teenager love affairs, absolutely all of them, came after Sixteen Candles, and all their directors owe it to John Hughes.

It’s odd that this movie was PG but there was no PG 13 yet. Since the target audience is teenagers it wouldn’t be any good if the movie was rated R.

I totally get that. When I’m just watching a movie, that’s how I view it. The point of our show is to watch movies that are 38 years old and judge them by today’s standard…not very well sometimes but. 😂

My favorite Molly Ringwald movies are The Breakfast Club and For Keeps. The way you guys reacted to the whole shower scene and your commentary about it, I literally can't wait for the breakdown of Blown Away, and knowing you guys you probably don't hate the idea of watching it lol. No bush in that movie either hey Cory *nod*nod*wink*wink* haha. As far as you guys thinking this movie is rapey, with no pun intended my response to that is "Me too". I had forgotten about the sound effect played to signify that idk a cartoon character has entered the room for the Asian Guy but imho the most racist thing when it comes to the character was the name they gave him. I'm surprised they didn't just name him "Sum Ting Wong". The name "Long DukDong" by itself would be enough to cancel the person responsible for his name. Also I am pretty sure I only witnessed obnoxious behavior like that on the bus as everyone was getting on because the driver was always mia then he got on and basically told everyone to sit down and stfu.

😳☺️ Blown Away will be a lot of fun to review. I’m laughing already and haven’t seen that shit in at least 15 years. I was a fan of For Keeps and She’s Having A Baby w/Kevin Bacon. Two really solid surprise pregnancy movies. Yeah, me too is the only appropriate response…lol. His character name and actions totally reminded me of this…kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmKtinuEjZ2jmtE You are totally right about the bus! The drivers took absolutely no shit.

It’d be interesting to hear what the actor who portrayed Long Duck Dong feels about the role when he was playing it then and now. It’s sad but obviously back in the 80’s there weren’t too many opportunities for representation of anything that wasn’t white. The more I think about it, there was racism, homophobia, and sexism all rolled up in his films. People obviously will say that that’s just the sign of the times. But you wonder if anyone was aware back then?
@KisstheReviews
@KisstheReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I know he’s spoke out against the role and was generally ostracized from the Asian community for a while. That’s a good question. My guess is that was deemed “acceptable racism” back in the 80s. Crazy how anyone though this shit was normal but it totally was.
@MrBdiddypop
@MrBdiddypop 3 жыл бұрын
Totally. I was a kid in the 80’s. 4-14. You definitely bought into the jokes back then. And then you look back and get a bit embarrassed. Remember Anthony Michael Hall doing his black imitation in Breakfast Club and Weird Science? I thought he was cool and funny and now you see those scenes and are like WTF? But you’re right, that was the times.

@@Fairways-and-greens Well, Fallon Wilder, I'm gen x, but besides that. The accent isn't the problem, it's the gong that sounds whenever Long Duck Dong comes on screen. But hey, I enjoy the movie. It's a relic and the world was a lot less enlightened. We're just acknowledging that.

First of all Long Duck Dong was an exchange student and wouldn’t have a good American accent right? So why do all these millennials get so offended by this character? Millennials have no sense of humor. Guess that’s why they are canceling Dave Chapel. Who was assaulted? Nothing happened?
