Not all of Hughes’ films were great, but this is one of the best. Maybe start a poll to see which Hughes movie you’ll watch next? Must-watches are: Weird Science, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and Planes, Trains & Automobiles. Glad you enjoyed this one!

As far as why 16 is an important age it is the year that a person can legally drive and hold a job, the end of childhood and the beginning of some adult freedoms and responsibilities.

When he comments that Molly Ringwald is doing a really good job at "playing a teenager". Part of her success in these Hughes films is that she WAS actually a teenager (15 when filming began) playing teenage roles, and not a 20-something playing a teen. Her "teenage-ness" feels authentic, because it is!
@obvioushieidude76689 ай бұрын
Agreed, but one slight correction. "20 something" as in 20-29 isn't an age group. Be specific, do you mean early 20s or late 20s?
@veeganboy9 ай бұрын
@@obvioushieidude7668 What difference would specifying the age make to what was posted? ...and 20-29 is most definitely an age group. Unless, of course, you have a different definition for "20-something" aka someone in their 20s.

Those red sunglasses that guy was wearing at the beginning were not actually an 80's invention. Strangely enough you can see someone wearing those in a 1966 episode of Gidget. 😎

This is the Hughes teen film that most closely resembles the sort of tasteless, boundary stretching humor of the National Lampoon Magazine, for which Hughes was a regular contributor of darkly comic short fiction pieces. His films would progressively become more family friendly, with UNCLE BUCK and CURLY SUE, or more dramatic, like BREAKFAST CLUB and PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES.

"No more yankie my wankie. The Donger need food!" Fun Fact: John Hughes cast Molly Ringwald after seeing her headshot. Inspired by Ringwald's appearance, he put it up over his desk and wrote the film just over a weekend, with her specifically in mind for the lead role. Trend Sitter Fact: The movie's costume designer begged Molly Ringwald not to wear the hat she wore in the beginning of the movie. Ringwald insisted. After the movie was released, teenage girls started wearing their hats tilted back like that. Slight Oversight Fact: Carlin Glynn (Brenda) confronted John Hughes about the fact that the script didn't call for her to apologize for forgetting her daughter's birthday, despite the fact that her character was described as a good and attentive mother. Hughes agreed, and added the scene where Brenda tearfully apologizes to Samantha (Molly Ringwald).

This movie came out the first week of May in 1984 and was an instant massive hit. It was heavily advertised beforehand, so everyone was looking forward to seeing it. I went with some friends to see it on opening weekend so I had no idea what I was about to see. The laughter was so loud through most of the movie that it was hard to hear some of the dialogue. Basically, if you combined this movie and “Fast Times At Ridgemont High”, it’s a pretty accurate account of the high school and teenage life in the 80’s. The biggest laugh this movie got the 4 times I saw it in 1984 was when Samantha’s grandparents got what they thought were obscene phone calls when they were trying to sleep.

In 1984 the "long dong" asian character is an obvious joke and they add a gong noise to make sure you know the host family is being made fun of here. What the internet taught us is that there are some people who never recognize the absurd as a joke. But in the past a thing that was possibly offensive was eventually hilarious if you get the audience to recognize you're not serious and that the offensiveness of certain ideas is part of the joke. We never imagined a world where the audience was only one person and we totally missed that even in a crowd some people thought the laughing was at someone else's pain.

The over-sensitivity of people today drives me nuts. When I said in a Facebook movie group that “Sixteen Candles” is my favorite John Hughes film, I got ejected out of the group and for the next 2 weeks got called every name in the book on Facebook. Ironically, some of the names those people were calling me were far worse than anything said in the “horrendously rapey and offensive” “Sixteen Candles”.

The song at the end w/Samantha and Jake finally getting together is by the Thompson Twins- great '80's band (Hold Me Now, Lay Your Hands on Me, etc.) You should definitely put "Pretty In Pink" on your John Hughes list, from 1986, w/Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy, Jon Cryer, & James Spader. Produced and Written by Hughes, but directed by Howard Deutsch- but has Hughes' imprint all the way. Fun reaction and review.

But I loved it as a teen & young adult. Joan was in the movie Instant Family. Great movie. 👍 Jamie Gertz who played Starr in The Lost Boys, is the girl that cut Caroline's hair when she got it stuck in the door. Anthony Micheal Hall who played in The Breakfast Club & this, also played the buff boyfriend in Edward Scissorhands.

Both of the grandfathers were in The Twilight Zone. The one we see first when the music played was a bit better known for having been in it. He was in two different episodes, one as the main character. At the time the film came out he was a spokesman for AT&T and appeared in a lot of their commercials. I’m surprised you didn’t react to the geeks wearing jockstraps on their heads. Score! Direct hit. I remember when I was a little kid that was something older boys used to tease you about. They’d tease you in junior high you have to change in the locker room in front of everyone and shower in front of them to scare you. So they’d tease as well you will have to wear one for gym and sports. Everyone hated wearing them, probably more embarrassed being seen in them changing, so that’s probably part of the joke. Compression gear is worn now and schools aren’t as strict as they used to be about making you wear even that. Last thing if you look real close Billie Bird playing one of the grandmothers never got in the car. She just bent down and acted like she did. You can see the car backing up with her clearly not in it.

You also got to remember; 16 is different for girls, than boys. The idea of Sweet 16; is usually an event to celebrate a girl becoming a woman. Now; this is only something those of the more Well-To-Do might hold for their daughters. Originally; it was more of a Coming Out party, where the parents would announce their daughter was of marrying age, a couple of hundred years ago. Now; girls don't marry at age 16, so the whole Sweet 16 is more formality, than an actually thing. Still; a girl's 16th birthday is still a big thing, and the fact the family forgot, is a bad thing.

One of the things I like about this film is how much Hughes is able to explore the whole high school world in the film without really getting side tracked from the main story. I also think its interesting that they chose to make Jake's gf a decent person. So many films similar to this like to make the main character's competition a horrible person so its easy to root for the protagonist and I like that Hughes didn't feel the need to go that route. Regarding Long Duck Dong, I never found any of the stereotypes to be malicious with him. And I can assure you that we all absolute loved that character.

Geordi La Forge wore those glasses. No they didnt have to ring the doorbell. They are freshman and have never been to a party so they dont know what they are doing. "Are they going to cut her hair? With scissors?" How do you cut hair Roly? Cars didnt have middle front seats, they had bench seats that sat three people. That's why they could do cool things like the driver sliding out the passenger side in the movie Pyscho. Everyone gets butt hurt that Farmer Ted takes advantage of Caroline, but she wasnt the only one drunk. Ted was so drunk he cant remember if he did that to her hair or if they did it at all. When two people are drunk why is one more culpable? You missed Joan Cusack in this too; John's sister.

This is one of John Hughes weaker films largely because it's so shallow. However, there are many elements of teen life in the 80s that he does a good job of capturing. Bullying in the 80s was pretty close to the stereotype depicted and often violently worse. Nerds, gay people, effeminate guys, were the typical targets and very little was ever done about it. "Revenge of the Nerds" came out in the same year and, while still using seriously questionable stereotypes, was among the first successful attempts to elevate "nerds" as "cool". The use of the gong as well as the Chinese guys name were deliberate jokes about his ethnicity. This wasn't uncommon at the time and most people thought it funny unless you were Asian who were often called some version of his name.
