The Smith Machine Will Not Turn You Into A Robot 🤖
Performing reverse lunges in a Smith machine is a perfectly fine exercise.
“But Grant, this isn't functional. You're not training your stability muscles.”
Funny how the people who argue this are also performing a leg press.
I would completely agree with you if you were trying to win gold at the Reverse Lunge Olympics because specificity is important.
Or if this was the only lower body exercise you perform (and I still think you’d be fine).
But you do perform other lower body exercises that probably does train your stability, whether that's freestanding squats or walking lunges or some sort of glute medius kickback.
So whatever is missed with this exercise will be made up later on. And that's why this is OK.
So what is the greatest benefit of using the smith machine?
You don't have to worry about balance.
So now it's one less thing for you to worry about.
You can use a much heavier load and really get after that glute (and quad).
