All players have to be in the same party to start the match or you have to go back to the main menu to join up. The campaign starts at the last save point (and can restart missions). However, if all players haven't played up to the same checkpoint in a mission, it will start at the last saved checkpoint for all players.

Did you jus throw 4 people in what’s supposed to be a solo experience or did you re-design the campaign to some degree? No, it's the campaign and the story focuses on Master Chief. There will be new challenges though and there are armor coatings you can earn for MP (no new ones to my knowledge).

Meaning that if you joined a friend, and then want to play alone to continue the campaign, you will have the progress you made with your friend. It's not like the old days anymore where the campaign you are completing is your friend's campaign only
