I loved this. Strangely, as an INFJ myself, I have always been drawn to Gandalf as a personal connection of character versus Aragorn or Frodo. This may sound strange but I have always had this vision in my mind of being and old man with a wizard beard and becoming wise and sage like. It’s like a goal of mine to become like Gandalf. I know you typed Aragorn as an INFJ as well but there is something about myself that doesn’t quite relate to the hero’s journey but more the self-sacrifice and willingness to guide but not necessarily interfere with those that I influence, a lot like Gandalf.

Heh, that is interesting! I do see Ti-heavy INFJs as very wizard like. I am open to Aragorn as an ISTP but on the whole I see an Se-activated Ni dominant with the Fe authority lending that all important charisma!

I'm an INFJ too, and totally agree with you. I have been a huge fan of Gendalf, and I often "imagined" myself as behaving and speaking like him, lol. This makes a lot of sense for someone who’s loved these characters for a long time. I can tell how well thought through this is and really enjoyed watching it! I relate to Sam a lot, his love of nature and animals, his stubborn hopefulness in dire situations, and definitely the way he behaves around Rosie. 😅 And I also have a tendency to get very protective of my friends. I’d only ever seen Frodo typed as an INFP and could never quite see myself in him, Sam makes a lot more sense. And I found it kinda funny that my favorite characters, Gandalf and Aragorn, are the same type, though on different sides of the spectrum. 😄 Thank you, these videos were lots of fun! ^^

Love your passion for the Tolkien universe…and also the depth of character analysis…I am an ENFP dancing around a potential relationship with an INTJ…me being patient for him to work through his thoughts…most of the internet content on INTJs had me both confused and terrified…I could not recognise the man I am falling for (and have known as a friend for some time) in the descriptions - he is so kind, loyal and easy to talk to - but equally he could not be another type based on theory…and the portrayals of someone so mechanical with no access to feelings or empathy was disconcerting as I am very expressive. Your descriptions here and elsewhere are refreshing and resonate perfectly with me…’my’ INTJ I realise simply works through emotions and decisions in slower time and in private (opposite to me 😌) and I love this actually because he holds me at arm’s length long enough for me to also think things through more fully and not to get carried away with intuition and assign meaning that doesn’t fully correspond with facts. Thank you!

Thanks Michelle! In so many ways Boromir comes across as more of an ESFP in his intensity and charisma, but in terms of functions I see him as an ESFJ struggling to act on an ESFP's (Denethor) wishes against his own moral compass/embodiment of traditional values. As with the Sam INFP vs ISFJ debate in the last video there are good arguments on both sides I feel, but overall the films paint to me Fe-Ne in the dominant position :)

Love the LoTR vids! Definetly relate to Aragorn, though I'm not sure because of type, but through the journey of being only responsible for your own vision and then taking the mantle of the group and directing that vision as your own. It's a very daunting task and getting past your own lack of courage in the vision is first priority in order to lead others. Also...background music, I heard a rendition of the Rohan theme on acoustic at one point. Is it safe to assume that is your own composition?

On my latest rewatch I decided to go ahead and type the characters myself. Seeing your first video on this topic I must agree, Frodo is ENFP. If you are up for it I can give you my analysis and we can have a chat about it, I can also understand if you are set on your typing of him and do not care for further discussion. Again, good job on Frodo, rare time someone types him the way I see it too.

Thanks so much! Awesome we're in agreement on Frodo and Aragorn :) I think it's important to consider Gandalf's playful and mischievous side outside of a war setting - I do see Te-Fi when he's in a leadership position for sure, but I believe this is within a highly developed INFJ stack. Oh, definitely, feel free to email me your own analysis and we'll chat some more!

I will say that as an ENTP I can often use a lot of Te when I am at work. I especially do this when I feel I am in a leadership position. I can be very strong in my Te but it’s not what I prefer to use and I can be quite critical of other’s use of it at times. So I do agree with Gandalf being an INFJ. When he is in his natural state he does have a warm and friendly interaction style with others, especially when one on one and when he is alone he does seem to be very contemplative with his Ni and Ti.

I agreed with everything you said in Pt1. I'm unsure as to your analysis wrt Aragorn and Gandalf. Gandalf is extremely old, and Aragorn has long life. So this applies to both: Ni (edit: Ni dom) doesn't seem to be what they started with, based on how each respectively interacts with the world & negotiates problems (at least in the movie portrayal). Rather than through matured personality (extension, dip). I've always imagined their evolution more outward->in, than inward->out: i.e they started with T?+S?, not T?+N?. It is interesting that perhaps their roles or representations in the telos of the literary work as a whole has a rather INFJ manifestation (more than other types), but this is to be distinguished from the characters as they lived per se. It is also difficult with such two major central and multi-faceted characters that we all see and relate much of ourselves in them, and perhaps as such they are unclassifiable.

As much as I'm a typical Sam fan, more people need to go to bat for Gimli (not that he'd ever want or even admit to needing it 😂). I love your very nuanced and thoughtful approach! That said, I think that perhaps you see too much of your own Ni Fe sensitivity in Aragorn and Legolas. Sorry if this sounds presumptuous, it’s just my impression and I do the same sort of thing myself. Anyway, there is just so much S in these guys! If you were to meet them in person their physicality would be overwhelming. I see Aragorn as an ESTP with very good Fe, and Legolas as a prototypical ISTP. I just don’t see how they could do what they do physically without S as a top two function. I’m going for the most stereotypical options but in this case I feel they really are perfect avatars of these two badass types. I feel your interpretation is taking their temperaments into account but not their extreme in-the-moment athleticism. But maybe I’m over simplifying? I’m sure there are great sportsmen and warriors of every type. Just my two cents love your show 😁✌️
@CognitivePersonality4 жыл бұрын
I think this is a fair appraisal! I do absolutely agree both Aragorn and Legolas have far more extended Se-physicality than most of their type. That being said, INTJs who pursue sports and athletic activities from an early age tend to excel while developing a style unique to them - they would also hide away from the spotlight and as such would rarely be seen competing with others of their level. I see Legolas as far too gentle, introspective and downright practical to be an ISTP, with the pragmaticism implying to me a divergent thinking pattern as opposed to the more individualistic Ti of the Ti-dominant. I actually really like the idea of Aragorn being an ESTP, though he would have to be a very reflective and reclusive manifestation. ESTPs are for sure more 'naturally' athletic than INFJs, but I do find INFJs can excel at a very niche physical area so long as they devote their identity to this excellence - the relative neutrality of Aragorn's cognitive stack will make this pursuit easier, as he clearly has more Se-grounding than the more stereotypical INFJ of Gandalf :) That being said, I absolutely focused more on temperement, communication styles and mental processing more than skillsets and concede, particularly in the case of the INFJ (even an 87 yr-old dunedain), being such a proficient warrior is unlikely. I also think the ISTP and ESTP tend to be more suitable to the warrior archetype Thank you so much!! :)
@theshimmerglimmers1054 жыл бұрын
Cognitive Personality Theory thanks for the very thoughtful response! I think it would be very interesting to find out what percentage of athletes and soldiers and other very physical types have S over N. It’s funny to think back on the natural Athletes I have known and realise that they likely had an advantage due to their function stack! As an INFP I think never stood a chance in sports against my Se buddies! I do agree though that Legolas does have that INTJ vibe. The archery could be a Te thing rather than an Se thing. And Archery seems like the most J pursuit ever. Anyway, it would be great if you could talk about LOTR all the time 😁✌️ Thanks!

I think Gandalf is Ti-Ni. ISTP. If he is an INFJ, then likely a 5.. but I do agree on his functions, I just don’t see enough Fe in him to type him INFJ. Aragorn as INFJ is a big yes. Boromir is totally Fe dom.. I love the take of Legolas being an INTJ! I’m going to have to consider it for a while before I’m completely sold on it but I do think it fits him more than ISFP (which I’ve seen a lot of others type him as). Gimli as an ENTJ is also a new take for me, I’ve always considered him ESTP. He obviously uses Se, but I thought ESTP because I have a hard time seeing him as completely blind to Fe. Still a good take!
@zduke14984 жыл бұрын
Also- how would you explain Legolas’ amazing Se?
@CognitivePersonality4 жыл бұрын
Gandalf is certainly very Ti-heavy for an INFJ, but then so am I! Within a group scenario he does a lot of Fi bypassing for sure, but I also believe the INFJ Fe to be misunderstood - sure, in a peace setting Gandalf is very gentle and considerate, but his priority is the development of those around him. As a well developed INFJ he hovers between convergent and divergent Fe employment. His primary utility is in forming new connections and his Ti-database is almost completely absent the mechanical. His Se employment also in short intense bursts :) ENTJs often have excellent Fe, but since it is dipped into from a Te perspective it is also entirely optional. If I typed him as an Se dominant it would be ESFP, as the Te seems to take precedence over Fe. INTJs often have excellent spatial awareness - Se-Te perceives the objects of the world, so their blend spot is Fe. Opposite for the INFJ, who does live up to the 'inferior Se' stereotype :)

Gandalf, Aragorn, and Legolas I agree. Boromir is an ESTP who's Se-Fe is overpowering his Ti and Ni because he cannot create a framework or see a vision that gives hope. Don't see the Si. Even if he were Fe dom, I'd still choose ENFJ before ESFJ. Gimli I think is ESFP. I see the Te and Se, but I find his Ni too heavily overpowered by Se. It doesn't seem like he's looping though, so I don't see Ni as an absent parent function, more as a suppressed inferior. Though I guess that doesn't fit with your framework, because if I remember right, your assertion is that introverted judging function just be used with an introverted perception function. To me, Fi can just as easily be paired with Se though.
@mattmatthewmatchuu4 жыл бұрын
We may type with different systems, do you adhere to dr linda berens interaction styles and temperaments? Aragorn has very pessimistic si thats a lot more apparent than an infj. I think of it more of an istp as he has pragmatically rejected his inheritance because si critic wont let him repeat his bloodlines past. He also has that Ni child luck, use of multiple weapons. I think an infj would look at the affiliative side of their royal heritage as a chance to change the world for good. Istp could fully rebel and choose some ranger lifestyle without Fi critic eating them alive. On gimli, i can see entj from the books as he plays more of a leadership role. In the movies esfp lol as jackson made him the comedian who never really argued with aragorn or gandalf. But same quadra no less for aragorn and gimli. I find infj explanations so dangerously non systematic lol but you guys are fascinating to me delving into their souls of each person... my typing is more semantics. Bilbo, i can dig it.

Hi! I do not ascribe to such systems, no :) Terms such as Fi critic are not employed within CPT, but as for the Fe authority of the INFJ it is apparent that Aragorn struggles to juggle his sense of destiny with his distaste of corruption/mankind. I do not believe Aragorn has a supressable Fe nor a constant Ti employment, though in terms of Se I can to some extent find that comparable to that of the ISTP. Codecs and lenses rotate within CPT, so he can definitely spend periods inhabiting an ISTP stack :) Cheers for the awesome comment!
