If you ever get the chance, fly in one, or any other warbird for that matter. There is nothing quite like the experience.

@jsm666 I've never heard about anyone making brand new Mk IXs and XVIIIs but there is a company in Australia that make a 80% scale kitplane version of the Spitfire called the MK 26

@jsm666 Actually there's about 44 Spitfires and Seafires (a small number) that are airworthy in the world. With more undergoing restoration to flying condition

@TopGunSGA That many? That's outstanding - there ought to be enough, then to keep at least the Battle of Britain memorial flight going for a long, long time. What's this I read about a few years back that someone was making new-build Mark 9's and 18's??

theyd come back across the chanel heading for manston shot up! and as children ( me dad said) theyd be standing in the town and on the beaches and cheering em on bombers spits and escorts alike! an me nan god bless her went through barbed wire on the beach to get to a crate of oranges that had washed up on the beach for her kids! sadly the sea had spoiled them but thats the heart of an english MUM.

Just think, back when the battle of Britain was happening, this was a common sight in the skies!, If i was alive then, i think i would of died of excitement :O These aircraft make me proud to be from Southampton.

@poopturd529 well, we (CANADA) had Spitfire's, and Firefly's in WW2. And now we have F-18's and in 3 years F-35's. People forget we are a nation of 30 million people. We don't have unlimited cash for our Defense.
