16 week old Yellow Lab Tricks

16 week old yellow lab does a few tricks.
EDIT: Since we posted this video many people have suggested that Jack is overweight or that we feed him too many treats. The treats were ONLY given for training. His weight is due to him being on Prednisone for Puppy Strangles at the time this video was shot. He is not then or has ever been overfed.
Jack is of the English Lab variety.
As for his training we had him enrolled in "puppy school" and this taught us how to teach him. He is a quick learner and was often able to complete a trick after being shown a few times.
As of now (March, 2009) Jack is almost 2 1/2 and is still a beloved member of our family.

Oh my!!!! You are so lucky to have such a beautiful puppy!!! He looks exactly like my late beloved dog Bonny. He died 4 years ago, at the age of 15. Take good care of this doggie and make sure to love him very much, because he will love you even more.

Hi - I am a Certified Dog Obedience Trainer/Instructer - Great Job with your training!!! Pup looks great - not too fat!!! Some people don't know what labs should look like at that age!!! I have had labs for the last 25 years and raise and breed them. He is one good looking, very calm, very obedient pup and you have done a very wonderful job with him - keep up the good work!!!

What a lovely, lovely pup. You have every reason to be proud of him and the wonderfully thoughtful, intelligent, patient work you have obviously done with him. What a precious little boy he was! I'm glad you put the update in so that we can know he survived his puppy health issue. More people ought to read the info on the side and they would understand the weight issue. I hope you put some new videos of Jack in soon. Thank you for sharing.

Labs are so amazing! I had to put my best buddy down last week at age 14, was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. :S Heartbreaking. So cute to see young ones and it's a reminder that life goes on. Great vid.

Our Papillon knows the very same tricks and at least 10 more, but he is a Papillon (a very smart breed). Our yellow Lab only knows two tricks (sit and shake hands) because I noticed he was harder to train/teach. Your video has inspired me to spend more time with our Lab now. Thanks for sharing it.

the leave it was very impressive for a 16 week old puppy, but seeing as he's a lab it's amazing!! my sister has a four year old female lab named lily and trying to get her to leave any food within her reach is impossible! Well done on all the training, he is clearly a very loved member of your family, he must be big now! :)

Excellent job. A trained dog is a happy dog. I would cut down on the treats as Jack gets older. Labs are great family dogs! I have a chocolate lab.

1:42 is really obedient. After he rolled over he immediately wanted the treat and sh said "Leave it" and he froze in his tracks. Very well trained!

I have to say, this is a VERY cute video. Enjoyed it alot. Also, at 4 months old, this dog isn't fat. Yellow labs grow very fast from 6mos to 1 yr, as i'm sure by now you guys have descovered. Thank you for uploading. And to GT1004: All i have to say is the vacuum thing is the funniest thing i've ever read, and I am glad I wasn't drinking anything at the time i read that!!!

Yellow lab's to me are the best dog you can find.But im really sad right now because my 12 year old yellow lab named Buddy died of a siezure after a lot of surguries i thought he would live longer.It just shows how attached you can get to pets.

What a cute puppy Jack is! He's not overweight, my yellow lab zeb was chubby as a puppy too. People would often note on it as well, but as soon as he grew up he was fine. As puppies labs are always little fat butter balls.

I think the difference is in what they are bred for. The longer labs are usually bred for hunting, the shorter ones more for show. But there are so many mixes.

We live in southern Ontario, Canada and although we had him in "puppy classes" we trained him ourselves. The tricks we taught him are fun, but the first and most important command we taught him was "come". This one can save a dogs life if he runs into the street for example. The easiest way to do it is to have your dogs sit, then you take 2 steps back and give the command "come" in a loud and firm voice. When he comes give him a treat and repeat. Then slowly increase the distance.
