Started watching your videos 6 months or so ago. Love them, lots of little tips that I find very helpful. One thing I try to figure out in your videos is what wood that you are using for each project. I can usually tell but sometimes the board is mostly covered or the video is zoomed way in and I can not tell. I would like to know what varieties of wood you use. Best and worst for cutting. Thanks mike in minnesota
@oldave1007 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Thank you for watching, so glad we could help. I use several kinds of wood depending on how big the sign is and what's available to me at the time. Also depending on what the customer likes. 1. My favorite is the cedar fencing. I think it's Northern White Cedar or similar. This is for smaller signs 5" wide or smaller. 2. Then Redwood fencing for same sizes as above. 3. Wider than 5" up to 11" wide I use Select Pine. 4. For large signs sometimes laminated Redwood. 5. Also for large signs laminated Western Red Cedar. 6. Another option for large signs is a panel board that is made from a species of pine. All but the laminated Western Red Cedar are available at Lowes. Woods I don't use: Oak, Alder, Poplar, just about any hardwoods. I prefer the softwoods. Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with eric@makeawoodsign.com Thank you

Hi Tim, thank you for subscribing & watching. Yes the dwp611 will do everything but some of the heavier operations eventually I would get a bigger router for. You guys are the best... you inspired me to go out and buy a router... and now I am wondering if I should quit my job and do this full time. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on a problem I am having with a customer? I was sent a design to copy, told exactly what size it would have to be and what not. Truth be told, this is the first time that my suggestions have been completely ignored and the sign I have made looks dreadful. The font and style my customer wanted me to do uses nasty sharp uneven letters and it is difficult to read from a distance. This is the first time I have been ashamed of something I have made, but then again, its not really my work. I personally would never have drawn such a poor design. I did make other designs for this guy based on his one he sent me, but he was not having any of it. He wants his... I simply do not want to sell such rubbish, because it reflects badly on me. This is a bar where probably 100 people walk in a day, and the first thing they will see is my sign on his wall. Whats worse, is this guy will not answer my phone calls, text, facebook or email to let me know if he is happy with my work... and my dealiine is closing (plus I have a life and another job, I dont have time to be chasing people all the time). Do you think you guys could make a video on how to deal with customers like this? I am hoping it is a one off, and that this never happens again, but I know it will. How can I explain to my customers that I want to make professional-looking signs, and not ones that look like soemthing from a rushed kindergarden art-class.

Thank U for the kind words. So glad you found us and we were able to spark an interest. In regards to whether you should quit your job and do this full-time that is out of the realm of our expertise. So many different factors come into play that is a decision for you and your financial advisers. The situation with your customer is a rather tough one. I have done signs before with the customers artwork that I thought could have been done much better had I designed it. However, if the customer is the one that designed it and that's what he wanted then I wouldn't feel bad about what you did. On the other hand, you have the option of doing business or not doing business with whoever you please. Ultimately it is your call. The part that I'm confused about is your deadline closing? The other thing I'm curious about is did you get paid for this job yet? I'll put this on the list to do a video on soon. Thank you, Eric

Dave Rhoten have oooooone more question lol, so I'm about to purchase the same dewalt router you are using in this video, after doing my research and watching you....I've convinced myself this is my best route to go...no pun intended, but I'm also buying the larger one for doing big clean up areas....with that said this is the router I want set up with one of your acrylic bases you guys offer, but am thinking about getting a couple of bits from you guys. but being on a low budget just starting out with my wood working, I was wondering if you guys have maybe a starter pack bundle??? or I don't know some sort of beginner package lol....if you would either write me back here, or email me it would be most appreciated. thanks again and keep up the amazing videos!!!! I spend hours in my small workshop watching you guys 😊 aloffland87@gmail.com

@oldave1005 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. Porter cable makes great routers. We have base plates for the P/C 450 as well as the P/C 690LR.

Is plain old black spray paint a good way to go. We are having trouble getting it off the signs. Any suggestions??

No I have never had luck with plain black spray paint. Here's a video Dave and I did a while back that explains it all kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3KXi3aOpNmMebM

Just watched, "Coffee & Questions 2/13" and it answered most of my question. I like knots on my signs, I try not to have a knot where I'm cutting. When I cut into a knot even a little, 50/50 chance it's going to tear out. Is this just me or the luck of the draw? The "D" in your sign was just fine, I will say, I haven't been gluing my knots. Thanks
@oldave1008 жыл бұрын
+Jerry Ivy Sounds like you're just been unlucky. If they have any movement at all you will improve your luck if you glue them. Give it a shot. Thank you, Eric

I have heard that Silicone Spray will contaminate wood and wood finish, and it hangs around in the air a long time. I would use it outside, not anywhere near the area I do wood finishing.
@oldave1008 жыл бұрын
Never had an issue with it. I only spray it in very shorty spurts.

I'm considering getting a DW611. I currently have a Porter Cable 690lr. Would the DW611 be leaps and bounds better due to size or would that money be better spent on bits and lumber?
@oldave1005 жыл бұрын
I like the small routers for carving, but I carved signs for decades with the bigger routers. The 690LR is a great router and will do everything you need. If you have to pick the bits and wood are FAR more important than the router.
@MrDirtysteve755 жыл бұрын
@@oldave100 thanks for the quick reply. I've got an assortment of bits, but there are some others I'd like to get. Same with lumber, you can never have too much. I think I'll try the 690 for a while, then get the 611 later. That way I can leave the 690 in the table and not dismount it so often.

I been trying to find how to rout small letters into wood what's best router or trim router? What bit and what's the best technique
@oldave1007 жыл бұрын
Jason, I like the small trim routers, easier to maneuver. I like our 60 degree bit and I would probably do them inset. Hope this helps. If you have more questions you can email me directly eric@makeawoodsign.com. Thank you
