I'm an old man now, but back in the day the yard dog crews would tell you what rail was building a train to were you wanted to go. The bulls would ask for your ID and run a check on you and ask you to leave the yard and drive off knowing you were gonna catch out. Just wanting to know mainly you wasn't a fugitive or an eleagal. THEIR was hobo jungels at every division, that's a hobo camp. Good friendly hoods helping each other out with coffee hot hobo stew and smokes if you were out. Good place to learn tricks to get along on the rails. God is were working tramps working in the orchards, and produce fields as well as day labor. We always helped out each other. The train crews would have you get in the cabos in cold weather so you wouldn't get to cold It was a good adventures lifestyle and I did it for 4 years steady untill I got married. The only hot yard in those days was Little Rock that was the bull training yard, they would check you out then drive you into town about 20 miles from the yard and uncuff you and said if you get caught in our yard again your going to jail. At that time there are multiple train companies in that humungas yard and it was all fenced in no way was you able to catch out on the hook. I'm wishing it was like the old day now I'm retired I'd be out there right now, but it isn't and I'm living in a place right beside a small yard and enjoy the sounds off the units power every day and ride the Amtrak often.

You should do it..my man. Got to experience it at least once. The memories will last a life time. Be carefull, stay alert, have a plan...in my day we had Rand Mcnally railroad railroad atlas. Sure... once in a while we had to make a hasty departure from the train and into the woods. Other times R.R. personell would direct us to the right track with info on the next departure. Road coast to coast...and lots of small line jumps. Even had the bull put me on the right track a time or two. But it is much different now...got to have a heightened state of awareness. You got to be in top form...cuz physically demanding. Alcohol was never part of my adventure...too dangerous. Had a great time anyway.
@kishascape Жыл бұрын
That's false. It's easy to tell general area of where a train will be heading based on what line it's on and it's cargo and the past 20 years now, ATCS monitor which tells you exactly where it will be going.

Having road the rails in the 90's. No internet, no cell phones or electronic maps. If you learned without getting killed it still was a hard way to go. It was June in Fargo MN. 7 people (Riders) had been killed along the "Highline at that point" of the year. Why does the Bull get angry? Fools out there being seen getting on and off. Hey 16x9 could you do a story on Kaliningrad (oblast of Russia, between Poland, Latvia and the Baltic Sea) - last year, they opened the border, for Poles living in the Northern Regions of Poland to visit Kaliningrad, and also for the Russians living in Kaliningrad who wants to visit Poland: Now, everyone in these areas, can just go to a local office, and right away grant a 1-2 day permit to go visit the other side of the border. Especially tourism to Gdansk in Poland, is now rather dominated by Russians who visits this beautiful city, which is both Polands largest harbour city, and one of the richest cities in Poland. The Poles go to Kaliningrad for historical reasons, to see what this "little part of Russia" is like - Kaliningrad have always been very important for the Russians, since this is the only harbour of Russia which is free-of-ice all year long. Lately, some problems with the region appeared, since the Russians set up some missiles pointing in direction of Poland very close to the Russian-Polish border, as a reaction to the European Missile Shield (against nuclear weapons), which have some missiles placed in Poland. All this - could make a pretty interesting episode of 16x9 ........ -Michael, Krakow PL

I agree with most of WH says, there are a few people out there with money and take advantage of that to do these things. But the biggest part of the expeireance is the traveling its self. If you are smart about what you do( and some are not) you will live a dream and come out with an edgeucation of not just what is around you but about your self. My last trip like this I took, I walked from Union station up through Pasadina, around through Glendale/ Burbank, over griffith park, Hollywood to west Hollywood then to Santa Monica and back to Holly wood. Cought the metro back to union and back on the bus to Pheonix. No cops, gang bangers or crazy people. Just me, a 70lb back pack and hand a sleeping bag. No big deal, but I don't have to many freinds that would do any of this. Urban camping, train hopping or any other so called dangerous things.

To restore a roller bearing caboose to be able to move on a Class I railroad would be far far more than a couple of grand. Then the cost per mile to move an occupied caboose would be amazingly expensive if anyone would even do it. Some small short lines might do it, but it would still be expensive.
