Also, Minecraft story mode is not lost media because the pirates also cracked that one, you can easily download it on the internet. In fact, this is valid for a lot of games in this video, you should really do your research better, a lot of games here can easily be played still.

To be fair, this is technically happening to shows as well, If you try to watch Supernatural on current streaming platforms instead of on disc or pirating, you'll find that a number of the songs have been substituted as a result of licenses expiring, unfortunately making certain scenes with iconic classic rock songs seem weird without the original song playing.

I really want The Path to be remade from the ground up on a modern engine like Unity or Unreal Engine (Unity would probably be a better choice). I don’t care if it uses modern, updated graphics or if it replicates the original visuals, I just want this game to be functional on modern software. Tale of Tales have actually been working on a remake of The Endless Forest. I can’t remember if it came out yet or what engine it uses (I think it’s Unreal), though the community seems to be more critical of it, especially with the aesthetic changes. Update: The Endless Forest remake hasn't been released yet, though the first beta was released in 2022.

@@toumabyakuya That's weird, last time I checked a publisher wasn't allowed to confiscate a game disc from your home. You fell for the corpo propaganda. There is no kind of license is the world where the license owner can make it so your software is unuseable without the expiry date of your software specifically having been stated from the start. If games are a service (they're not) when they end needs to be openly dictated when you buy them. "Well you agree to the EULA which states they can do whatever they want with the game." EULA's don't mean shit if they don't agree with laws, companies can't sneak in a "We legally get to kill you" clause and get away with it. The reason they get away with it is that lawmakers are too old to get what's being done, same with lootboxes being gambling for children when that's clearly illegal.

@@BenersantheBread *"last time I checked a publisher wasn't allowed to confiscate a game disc from your home."* They actually are allowed to do this, within reason. As long as people just keep accepting digital only and "games as service" terms without any protections to the consumer, such as full refunds should you be cut off from any game/service for any reason, you'll continue to have this problem. Push for legislation that makes companies offer permanent use to the consumer or to lose money should they take away the product. Once their money is at risk, they will stop these practices.

LBP, especially the first two games, were not only some of my favorite playstation games but also favorite games of all times. The music in them really defined my tastes during my teenage years and introduced me to artist like Ladytron and Kinky. So sad that the series went the way it did Also, I've would have loved to see Wolfenstein 2009, Bulletstorm, and Iron Storm on the list. Those games really brought something intresting to the FPS genre, in my opinion. Especially, Iron Storm with the alternate history it presented Also also, OW2 isn't a new game, just a disappointing 2.0 update. Just my two cents

Hell, the path was one of my favorite games for a while! Even made a 'chronological' playlist of Cinnamon Toast Ken's playthrough of it (making the routes in order of youngest sister to oldest) and an oc inspired by Robin, the youngest girl. It sucks that I'm probably never going to be able to play it myself...

I know this game was never mentioned in the video, but this just reminds me of the whole debacle with Bushiroad and Love Live School Idol Festival. I got into Love Live because of this game, and I listen to the songs pretty regularly, with Aqours being my favorite of the groups. LLSIF was a rhythym/anime gacha game that released all the way back in 2013. I love rhythm games and got hooked on this one when I was 16. It was how I was introduced to the anime, the fandom (for better and for worse), and how I found a music genre I really liked. Last year, despite millions of fans, the company Bushiroad set LLSIF to shut down on March 31, 2023 in favor of a sequel game set to release a few months later. I still remember the chaos. Everyone was trying to backup their save data, and many international players were unable to. I fell into the latter, and just screenshotted the pages and pages of Ultra Rare characters I had collected after years of playing. And then the time came. I remember logging in one last time to grab some more screenshots and I attempted to try and play one more song to see if it would still work. The app immediately crashed, and I knew that was it. Even worse, the sequel, Love Live School Idol Festival: Miracle Live would shut down 11 MONTHS after its initial release, so even trying to back up save data from its predecessor was ultimately worthless. I know this is just one of many anime rhythm games about highschool girls in cutesy outfits singing about their hopes and dreams, but it's something I hold very close to my heart. The Love Live fandom is a fucking nightmare, I completely recognize that (I cannot count the number of people I've blocked for fetishizing the characters, who, I want to emphasize, are HIGHSCHOOLERS) but there were still those corners of the internet that kept shit wholesome, and would celebrate the new outfits gachas, discuss the anime, and cheer people on as they perfected their rhythm game skills. I really wish LLSIF was still up and running. This was the game that introduced me to Aqours, whose songs of unrelenting positive energy got me through highschool and later COVID lockdown during my first couple of years in uni. I hope there's some rewritten form of it preserved out there, as I miss the days of just tapping my screen with reckless abandon as I tried to Full Combo every single song. TLDR: Love Live School Idol Festival is a mobile rhythm game that shut down last year, and I wish it didn't.

At least what Ubisoft did isn't even a legal grey area - it's explicitly illegal, and they're being sued over it. We need this regulation sooner, rather than later. Games may be only data, but so is a book - the only difference is method of storage. Once sold, publishers can't just go and destroy it.

Hi, I just wanted to say that as a long time, lbp player, thank you for covering the devastating shutdown of the lbp servers and even mentioning the custom online servers. I feel like a majority of ex-lbp players probably have no idea what ended up happening to the lbp servers in the end or even why they were shut down to begin with or that custom lbp servers exist and can be accessed! It's nice that someone with a bit of a following like yourself covered such a small topic. 😊

I would LOVE to mention an app I played as a kid that was a Marvel game, Avengers Academy. While it seemed like a usual farmville clone but with Marvel characters, it was it's own universe and received MCU tie ins up until Thor Ragnarok. It shut down due to not being worth keeping alive. I played it on and off during it's time alive and I LOVED the designs and personalities of each hero and the RPG turn based gameplay for when your doing the main story missions. It was a game you'll expect them to keep straight to the MCU but not really, the events and tie in costumes and characters were the only MCU pieces as a lot of the game uses Comic only or heavily based on the comic counterparts. They even had characters like Angela (the Odison siblings other sister and resident Spawn character) in the game along with a lot you wouldn't suspect. I wished they made it to Endgame before shutting it down but thankfully a lot of its memories are saved via tons of fanart and while it was a bit niche compared to the lego games or other tie in games, there WAS a fanbase for it. We also got Emo Kid Bucky so.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - First Assault Online. It *was* a first person squad shooter where you'd take the roles of the Section 9 operatives in objective based missions and vs modes. Nexon, the developer who made it, shut the service down on December 6th 2017 and even offered refunds to players who'd purchased the game before it went F2P. It doesn't have a Steam listing anymore and all that remains of it is the Discussion group. It was actually a really fun and well put together game, but it came out when the market was saturated by Team shooters like TF2 and Overwatch 1.

Yeah it is, but the engine it was made on makes it so the game is literally rotting away, corrupting more and more with each windows update. It's not about if the game is still purchasable, it's the fact that the engine is so old, obsolete, and obscure that modern programs can't easily download and utilize the files. To preserve it it'll need to be rebuilt from the ground up. Otherwise it will not work properly even though you can still buy it.

It's usually not the devs making the decision to pull the plug on these games, but the publishers (i.e. Ubisoft) or parent companies (i.e. Activision-Blizzard). But developers get such crappy treatment from the higher ups, that even if they WANT to keep supporting and working on these games, they'll be ignored in favor of shutting the games down. It's very, very rare when the devs' thoughts or feelings are honored when it comes to these decisions. Closest you'll get is like with Spellbreak, where they released the tools for the fans to keep going if they wanted to in the form of that client.

Because I was a kid with a short attention span, I would often delete the app and reinstall it when I was bored. One day I started looking for it, and it was nowhere on the App Store. I did some digging and found only a handful of videos on KZbin and their Facebook account saying it was now a Facebook game. I’m honestly just looking for something else who remembers this game.

No One Lives Forever is a series I've been wanting to see a 3rd game from it for years now. My first experience was sometime between 2013-2015. It took me FOREVER to get my hands on a full NOLF 2 game at the end of 2016 (because the one in the CD that came with 1 did not work). A shame that the rights for this game has been lost between several studios and publishers which is the only reason why we never got another sequel. Edit: I'm actually surprised that a group of devs is still desparately trying to get their hands on the game to this day, it might gives us a small hope, regardless the fact they are continue to reach that goal is alone good to hear.

I know absolutely nothing about game development so I might be talking out of my ass here, but this video is just further confirmation for me that no game should be made without offline functionality. If a game has single player mode, it should be able to run at without an internet connection. It’s just so sad how much has already been lost and will continue to be lost due to over reliance on online servers. As we move further and further from physical media, digital preservation is so so important. But this isn’t my area of expertise to say the least, so maybe there’s something I’m missing here. Personally I just don’t see a reason why any game that is not a strictly multiplayer experience should not be able to be played without a running server.
@pan1884
@pan1884 6 ай бұрын
Nope, you're exactly right. There IS no reason a single player game can't run without a server; it's just a ploy to make you rely on the publishers to play their game, so they can pull the plug when they want and more-or-less force you to purchase their new shiny title. It's forced obsolescence, but for video games.
