I just wanna say, Night in the Woods is such a masterpiece, and is somehow more relevant to me now than it was before. Currently being a college dropout and dealing with the emotional/existential fear of isolation and losing friends, as well as just finding my own path, makes the game all the more poignant to me. While I won’t deny that Pico’a school is a very edgy game and filled with a lot of questionable stuff (heck, you can click on a dead teacher’s tit and get a achievement), I feel like you may have misread Pico’s character in the game. He wasn’t here to get mindless and violent revenge; it was to stop them from doing any more damage and escape. Whenever Pico runs into them, they’re always the ones to start the conflict. The guy in the hallways will always shoot Pico no matter what you try to tell him, the two mini bosses trap you in the room and try to kill you, and Cassandra tries to destroy the school. Heck, you don’t even need to kill one of the bosses; you can just grab the key and leave the room. As for Pico’s speech near the end, it was less “Look how morally superior I am to you” and more “these are actually healthy ways you could have expressed your emotions, but since you didn’t do that I have to kill you.” The game, and this scene specifically, was made to be a call out to those that say games are the fault for these shootings, with Pico representing Pico’s school, and Cassandra representing the actual shooters, calling them out for being so deranged. Oh sure, this game is full of offensive content, but plot wise, I think you may have been a bit too harsh on it.

The part on Night in the Woods really hit home for me, especially as someone who is processing a recent traumatic event. Disturbing media can indeed help contextualize and understand trauma. My “Night in the Woods,” so to speak is a game I hope to see in this series, DEVOTION. I spent nine months of my life in an abusive cult situation, one I am currently in trauma therapy for, and what led me to questioning the cult was Devotion. Devotion will always remain one of the most disturbing games I have ever played, the ending reveal alone being extremely messed up, but at the same time, it was able to lay bare what I wasn’t seeing. That game saved my life, as weird as it is to say. How it depicts and talks about the damage cults can do to people is painfully and harrowingly real, but at the same time, it raised the mirror to my face, forced me to see what I wasn’t seeing. Devotion saved my life, plain and simple. It’s one of my all time favorite video games for that reason.

The Beginner’s Guide honestly hits close to home. Back in November, I left an abusive friendship. Besides us becoming different people, I felt like I was only there to help build up my “friend.” They didn’t care about or understand my interests, they constantly gave me crap over my sexuality (I identify as aroace/asexual-aromantic, and they would constantly ask me why I chose to not have a relationship, ask me if I wanted to date them or be in a friends with benefits relationship despite me saying no and making it clear that I was bothered by them bringing it up randomly, and would brag about how happy they are to be married…), they wouldn’t respect my boundaries, were very clingy and possessive and I realized how manipulative they were and how unhealthy our friendship was. I cut them out in November and changed my phone number because they used an app to block evade my blocks. The harassment got really bad in December; they started harassing my mom and threatening me, when I put my account on private they said they had a way to get around it, and my emotional health took a massive toll. I barely ate and lost a lot of weight, I laid in bed all day, had to leave work early, and I tried to take my own life. My dad got his detective friend to contact him and he was told that if he tried to contact me again, he the police would be at his door in hours. I have a webcomic Im developing as an analysis of horror games (especially romance-horror and horror visual novels) and this reminded me to note down that the only real people in the comic are the reader (either preserved as the fourth wall or presented as an incomprehensible monster throughout the story) and the main character. Everyone else is a paranoid delusion made worse by a mentally ill child getting too into the community of romanticized horror online. (Thank u!)

Not gonna lie, that sounds like a great read! I can see this as something with great potential.
@GrimmDelightsDice2 жыл бұрын
@@ZaberZlayer7 Thank you! That means a lot!! It's still super in development (I'm working on fleshing out character reference and written panel outlines through the third chapter rn) and the reader featuring as the "main" antagonist is actually gonna kind of be a twist/not a HUGE part of the story for most of it. It was inspired by watching (by proxy) my best friend's youngest sibling (11) get sucked into horror media online and using that as a vector to examine my own somewhat romantic relationship with horror media [often as a form of self harm], and things like Killing Stalking, creepypastaxReader, or the genocide Undertale route becoming popular. So it's mostly gonna be an examination of a young teen who is both enamored by dark media and surrounded by dark circumstances, and the interaction therein. (No "video games cause violence" here, just an examination of how the romanticization of horror and death in online circles of children can open avenues for those children to be hurt.) This was half a reminder to myself in case I lose the document I'm using for random spatters of planning because it's going in the inspiration playlist :> (Aiming for going live on webtoons or an independent site late this year, under the name "Killkit"/"Killkit Comic", but I post some stuff on my Instagram (inkynewt) and Twitter (inky__newt), i think I've only posted a main character design so far iirc)

I still die inside over PT. I was exposed to Silent Hill from a young age through my mother. I was about four, just watching her play. Being a kid, I just thought the monsters were cool. As I got older, the underlying themes of mental illness and struggle started to make sense and relate to my situation. With anything past the Room having no real psychological horror that made the first games memorable, PT was a refreshing experience that hit really close to home and my childhood. I am still remorseful of what me and my mother could have experienced together.

I feel like "Discover My Body" should have been included somewhere in here, as well as, "Mind Sweepers" I think is what it's called? And "Presentable Liberty" Discover my Body is this strange short horror game, where the player is tasked with analyzing, talking with, and discovering the parts of, a test subject. He gets this strange injection implant, that starts to morph and warp into him, starting as a strange mass in the shape of his mother's face, and ending with him being part of some horrifying hive mind The Mind Sweepers one, is about someone who goes around town, analyzing people for potential mental illness, and "curing" them. There are some horrifying implications, and choices though, as you can simply choose not to help someone who clearly needs it, or "cure" someone, that has nothing wrong with them. You can even completely remove their personality, leaving them as a brainwashed zombie. There's quite a bit of lore too, about this dystopian future, and the people inhabiting it Presentable Liberty, though, feels like its own whole tier. There's something about it, that's extremely hard to explain. The entire game takes place in one room, with no interaction with other characters. All you can really do is read letters, and play video games to pass the time. Other characters can send you things, but you can't respond, leave, or do much of anything else. It's amazing at making you feel truly isolated, and cuts you off from the world outside, while still using these letters to understand what's going on. Things like a traveling friend, a local bakery shop owner, and a man that's been tasked with keeping you happy, so that you don't kill yourself Edit; sorry that this comment is so long

Oxenfree is definitely a game that deserves to be on this list. It's a game that, while not filled with your traditional horror game monsters, is genuinely terrifying with how it presents these unseen forces that haunt the various characters, and makes you feel powerless to stop it from happening. And the ending sequence, regardless of what "ending" you even got, is truly the most chilling part of the game, revealing that they're all trapped in an endless loop, started when Alex chose to go to the island to begin with. You realize everyone forgets the horrors they just experienced...as they prepare to visit the island once again. Some of the game's scares, secrets, and story can only be fully experienced when playing through the game multiple times, too. There is a way to break the "curse", and it requires jumping through some hoops on a new playthrough, in order to ensure that the Alex in the next one _won't_ make the same mistake of going to the island. This concept makes the player wonder how many Alexes failed to stop the loop, and you'll never really know. There was a whole ARG surrounding this game years ago, too, and it was actually kind of fascinating. A second Oxenfree game is in the works, too. I'm really looking forward to it!

I love Night in the Woods so much. I feel a connection with Mae and also have a tattoo from the game, the leaf in the wind from Mae's journal and I want to get one of Mae herself. One of my favourite quotes from the game is Mae's monologue and I don't see many people talk about it. I'm glad that it helped you in such a heart breaking time. While I am from Australia, I also come from a little country town; I live away from it now. I also dropped out of university and feel that everyone else is progressing and I'm stagnating. I think Hatoful Boyfriend might be worth mentioning. It did the subverting expectation of dating sim games with some horrific elements before DDLC, and it was cited as an inspiration for that one secret ending in Dream Daddy. Even being a visual novel that doesn’t necessarily show a whole lot of horror visually, it sure scared me when I first played it. Even beyond the ending you might expect from the obvious scary yandere school nurse, the true BBL route takes a sharp turn into thriller/horror/mystery that certainly spooked me and left me thinking for weeks. I just think it deserves more attention than it usually gets beyond “haha silly bird dating sim lol”

One game I'm surprised isn't on the iceberg (unless I missed it) is Never Ending Nightmares. It would fit nicely in the second or third tier. I remember the first time I watched someone play it, I was completely floored with how I felt afterwards.
@cosmickitty54752 жыл бұрын
A recommendation for the next part is The Consuming Shadow. You play as a man who is tasked with stopping one of the gods from destroying the planet. Each playthrough is randomly generated making previous information gathered obsolete. While fighting off monsters you lose sanity and gain injuries that hinder your progress to piece together the banishment ritual. When your sanity is low enough you start hallucinating monsters that aren't even there. Along with the ritual you take jobs to gain money for ammo and health at the risk of running out the clock. At the end you head to Stonehenge in a last dash through an underground facility facing even more monsters before the end where you either save the world with the spell or condemning it to destruction.

Mike falling out of a tree is just as deadly, sure, but it doesn't exactly convey the same weight and tone as "Okay, so your parents are probably dead, your sister manifested herself as being half covered in darkness because of damage to half her face, and the dolls you won at the fair protected you in your mind allowing you to wake up. The studio behind Bendy and the Ink Machine, Kindly Beast, got into some hot water over alleged workplace abuse, making BATIM’s story and the context behind it seem quite ironic in hindsight. In a nutshell, the workplace has, allegedly, been very not worker friendly according to a lot of anonymous sources on Glass Door (an anonymous company review website), saying a lot of unpleasant things about their work experiences. What’s more, ~50 people were fired from KB Studios before Christmas. They also (allegedly) knowingly released a half-baked console port of BATIM and lied about Showdown Bandit. They didn’t disclose to players that it would be chapter-based, like Bendy. It did not sell very well when it came out and garnered a fair bit of bad rep from players. After it released, the head guy fired the entire team developing it to work on it himself. When the dirty began getting aired, exposing them of their scummy business practices (a video discussing this will link in the comments so that everyone can gain full context), Kindly Beast silently pulled Showdown Bandit from Steam and wiped all social media accounts and posts discussing/advertising it, essentially saying to the fans that the game was canceled. There’s a lot more I could say, but I don’t want to rant for too long. Watch the video linked in the comments if you want to know more. @eddieposting2 жыл бұрын
something i would like to point out in regards to OFF is that creator of the world (Hugo) being the player’s (specifically the Batter’s) son actually comes from a mistranslation of the original french dialogue spoken by the Queen/Vader Eloha (who for the longest time was thought to be Hugo’s mother) during her fight. so Hugo is still the creator of the world, _including_ the Batter and the Queen (who may or may not represent the idea of parents to him)… … which, considering the fact that you as the player have to kill Hugo to proceed through the story (bc the game does not end there), in my opinion, makes Hugo’s “fight” all the more disturbing.

Im a little late to this video but- at 30:15 , that little Gnome isn’t exactly a Gnome, per say. In the DLC, you play as a kid, who’s name is Seven, trying to escape the same area Six is, called The Maw (?). I don’t remember how, but i know that Seven got turned into a Gnome. The same Gnome that Six ate. Six has no idea she ate another child, presumably around the same age as her. This was probably already commented but i wanted to mention it anyways because i love the Little Nightmares series. It conveys a story while playing, but with almost zero dialogue. The only dialogue you hear throughout the game is small things like “psst” “hey” “hi” “hi-ai”. If i got any information wrong please let me know as I haven’t played any of the games in a while and im a bit rusty on relaying info on the game.

pretty obvious one, but its a shame you didn't include omori. This game tells such a tragic story that can hit very close to home. Having all the "cute" first impression only for it to become unsettling the more parts of the story you start to uncover, is a fairly popular trope, but omori balances the sadness and creepiness perfectly. While the gameplay parts seem to be hit or miss for people, the story and real life parts are undeniably fantastic. Its also amazing how omori manages to have creepy moments that once you replay the game, foreshadow the plot without making it too obvious

I was extremely depressed and anxious, had stopped seeing my therapist and in general was just running from my problems. I went into it blind so I didn’t know what I was getting into it just looked cool but as I played through it more and more it really hit me emotionally. It made me think about the people who had died or for all intents and purposes had gone “missing” from my memory from high school. It made me think of all the friends I had said goodbye to for the final time without realizing it. It made me think about how stuck I felt and much I hated myself and my life at the time. But it also made me feel seen and okay with the pain of my situation. It made me realize there’s people who know these feelings so well they took them and made something beautiful out of them. It made me look at my situation from a different lens. It’s been about a year and things aren’t nearly as suffocating as they felt back then.

The storyline of BioShock is fascinating to me. It’s truly one of the best game series to exist! I love it!

I know this comment will probably be unseen, but if these games aren’t on this iceberg somewhere I’d consider them! Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina are… very intresting games. They’re disturbing and sickening but never overwhelming in my opinion. Lobotomy Corp is the first game by Project Moon and definitely has some bugs and issues (and only recently was one of those issues fixed with a redux of the english translation). It has some very disturbing elements, including one scene that has stuck with me for quite some time. The scene in question being one where the cartoonish art style drops for a moment, giving us a look at the real facility, before the assistant realizes the mistake and turns the filter back on. Very messed up and creepy themes in this game, including being found within the abnormalites you manage, the cast of characters you meet, and even yourself. Library Of Ruina is this games sequel! It takes place after the end and you see not only the aftermath of your actions but the outside world for the first time. It’s not a very happy one, filled with murder and a general sense of the loss of what meaning a life holds. I haven’t actually gotten that far in this game unfortunately (both of these games are extremely difficult), but its still a favorite of mine. Consider checking these out for this list! Or just in general, since they’re very underground games in the west. Lobotomy Corp is a rouge like scp management sim while Library of Ruina is a deck builder game. While both are difficult beyond belief, they can be rewarding too. If you don’t have time to sink into them, there’s always videos on youtube, though with Lobotomy Corp, the English translation might be rocky for earlier videos.

I don't think Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina really fit on this list, because they are entirely their own things with a ginormous amount of lore and worldbuilding and a rabid dedicated fanbase.

You don't have to bring Columbine into "Postal" for it to be disturbing, for those who were around when workplace stress in the postal system in the US was so bad , due to systematic abuse of workers that two people shot their co-workers in two different incidents and postal locations. The phrase "going postal" has been kicked around so much that it has lost a lot of the meaning, which is horrifying on its own. The game was inspired by people who were abused to the point that their minds snapped, just from a job with benefits that people didn't want to lose.

A suggestion that I have is a game called “The Path”. It’s an unnerving game that I really enjoyed. Plus it’s also got a really mysterious story as well.

Sally Face feels like it should be included in the second layer. It has a very unique art style for a story game (I wanna say point and click but it breaches a bit beyond that). It definitely includes some gorey topics and the ending isn’t a typical happy one since it ends with defeat of the evil characters but other things not being resolved. The game had some popularity and even continued development because of the KZbin community and KZbinrs like Jacksepticeye. Some of the themes definitely match with other games on this list and I felt a feeling of dread during the ending and what Sal is forced to do. Sorry this comment is long, the game just holds a high place to me! Great video < 3

I'm so glad Harvester is on this list, it's one of my favourite weird games and makes me want to have fmv style games get a comeback.

Great video! However, I'm hoping in your next video you'll be able to cover the oddly banned Marvel game, The Punisher. Similar to Manhunt, the game has extremely graphic interrogation scenes that caused the game to be heavily censored or even outright banned in countries. If that doesn't interest you, I also highly recommend mentioning "They Breathe" a survival horror game that forces the player to willingly sacrifice their own frog friends to delve deeper and conserve oxygen or try your might to save everyone while fending off parasites. While not graphic, I feel the horror behind being in a state of drowning and very real depiction of parasitic relationships (*Using frogs as lungs to provide oxygen*) terrifying.

I really like the idea of Harvester, even though it's not executed the best. I wonder if something similar could be done today.

As always I love your content and I just took a look at the iceberg! I'm super hyped to see stuff like "I have no mouth and I must scream" and corpse party but one of my favourite ps2 horrors was excluded so I wanted to mention it here. Rule of Rose is a game with fairly disturbing themes that actually has a history of controversy so I'd love to see it covered :]

One game that's not on there that I believe belongs on at LEAST the second tier, is The Path, a red riding hood game.

The Mortal Kombat section was so interesting. We always talk about “Oh people scared over violent video games is so stupid” but it’s so weird to think there was a time where we didn’t have a rating system or stuff like that. I mean, I’m all for violent video games, but I grew up in a time where my parents could easily make judgments on what was appropriate for me (using both the rating systems and the internet). But parents didn’t have that back then. I mean, it’s easy to make fun of parents for being overzealous pearl-clutching Christians (and I’m not saying they weren’t) but I can’t imagine trying to raise a kid in a world of video games before easy access to websites that evaluate appropriateness or rating systems

It makes me feel weird that I didn't have a game disturb me until I was a teenager. My dad and I played through Resident Evil 1, 2, & 3 together when I was around 7. I was always exposed to horror games and movies, and have a deep love of the genre. For those wondering, the first game to disturb me was Spec Ops: The Line. I come from a large military family, and knew about the horrors of war. This did not prepare me for seeing what those horrors actually look like. 3 years ago, I sat down with my step-dad to play through the game with him as part of his therapy. His therapist wanted him to expose himself to media that put him back into scenarios that were similar to those he experienced. It took him 8 months of trying to play 2 days a week to finish the game, and said it was the most mentally taxing thing he had done since his discharge from service.
