The section on Spec Ops: The Line is a wee bit misrepresentative of the experience, though mostly accurate. The game's loading screen tips originally start with generic tips like "shoot with RT" only change to begin mocking the player after either the WP or Water sequence, and similarly the main menu changes after every chapter to reflect where you are in the game, and the state of Dubai. Your companions aren't necessarily figments of your imagination, though that could be one way to interpret it, it's more like they're characters that could represent elements of the human psyche (or at least Captain Walker's psyche) as it breaks down, but I don't think they're imagined people

Not many games fucked up my emotions like spec ops, so when the white phosphorus section played out i didnt really care i just thought it was another game trying to shock the player. However when you encounter a large group of civilians who are screaming at you and youe partner, your partner is yelling for you to take action. Now playing this game after experiencing no Russian I had taken action by point my gun and shooting at the innocent people but the screams that the civilians gave are still haunting than no Russians tourists. I legitimately didnt touch the game for about a month until I was ready to restart the level and decided to shoot up towards the air, which allowed the civilians to run. While not any better than anything else I did in the game I was just glad I saved a few people. But then the loading screens give the taughts of "you really think your a hero"

I played That Dragon, Cancer waaaay before my mum got diagnosed with endometrial cancer, and even then it left its mark on me, showing me a completely different side of games. I've recently replayed it after 6 months of Mum not being with us anymore, and I can wholeheartedly say that just like it was said by Ryan Green himself, these games should exist. While my grief will never compare to the pain and sorrow that parents feel when losing their children, if I had the right skills to make a game that could both celebrate my mother and console those who lost their parents too soon as well, I definitely would've.

Alice: Madness Returns will always be my favorite horror game of all times. It has such an amazing story and does a great job representing the cruelness of topics such as child trafficking, rape, murder, loss of a parents and family at a young age, and the depression and aniexity that comes with it. I think a lot of people can find the main character - Alice somewhat relatable because of the things she has to overcome to save her mind (Wonderland), and learn the truth.

That Dragon, Cancer, remains one of the only games to make me not just cry, but full on bawl. The first time I heard about it I was in the depths of post partum mental illness (psychosis namely, but also along with that depression) and it was awful. I couldn't make it through a video talking about it without wanted to crawl out of skin. My daughter is nearly nearly 2 and it still hits just as hard because it's so hard to comprehend. 51:22 Hi, native Appalachian here. The terrible whiteness of Appalachians Nights might be about the more problematic aspects about Appalachian family's. Particularly domestic abuse. The tense, bleak of the game might simulate how a spouse in that situation would feel. I can only assume the reason why the kids wake up screaming is due to frequently nightmares from the situation. The reason the character you play is probably afraid when Mark screams isn't concern for him. It's probably because she's afraid of what he might do to her. The scene of... Well, THAT... Might refer to the consent issues that show up in some relationships where the wife might not verbally object, but she feels she HAS to. The Nazi symbolism might be two things. One, it could mean she sees Mark as a tyrant, or two, it could be a commentary on the ultra traditionalist values seen in Appalachia. Usually these abuse situations can be caused by multiple factors. Stress from extreme poverty. The traditional "christian" view that the man is the head of the household, and therefore always right. Lack of education and exposure to other family dynamic styles, which leads to a perpetual cycle. The situation in Appalachia is not a pleasant one. Unfortunately, due to superstition of outsiders, they often won't accept help.

PLEASE look into the suicide of Rachel foster. this game is so disgusting and disturbing in how it completely botches up its message about p*dophilia. the most disturbing part for me was when the daughter of a man who dated a literal child find this girl's room recreated, after the entire game portrayed the child as a "woman". you see that this was a child this man took and forced to live with him, then recreated her room as her death (which is revealed at the end to not be suicide but murder). so few people have covered what is actually wrong with this game and it's message and it NEEDS to be talked about

I’m surprised Edna’s not on here. If anyone has played the game or heard of Edna & the Breakout ( or the sequel Harvey’s New Eyes ) then it’s one of those games that’s kinda forgettable. Okay, the game is about this girl named Edna who’s in this asylum that wants to breakout because she claims that she’s not crazy. The one that helps escape is her best friend “ Harvey.” It was discovered during a few parts of the game that the reason why Edna’s there in the first place was because her father was sentenced to death of the death of the owner of the asylum ( Doctor Marcel ) son was killed. Edna wanting to see the truth, Harvey decides to help. Harvey is basically Edna’s only real way of remembering what happened when she was little. This game, at first I thought it was just some harmless game, but it became kinda disturbing when you realize there was something really wrong with her. I’ve played the game multiple times to figure out why she like this. The closest answer I could come up with was that she was only like this because she didn’t have any friends but Harvey. Harvey was just this blue rabbit stuffed animal she always had with her, in her imagination Harvey could talk & walk. Basically she only ever listened to what HE said. This game disturbs me even more when you find out in the sequel the same Doctor claims that Edna…never existed.

I don't know if you've heard of this one, but it's a short (~1 hour) visual novel I found on Steam years ago. It's called Ambre and its premise is that you're a man who discovers a little girl abandoned in a park. You take her home to care for her and essentially watch how she lives/develops through the rest of the game. I won't spoil anything because it would absolutely destroy the impact to the game's ending. I'm not sure if it'll even be considered an honorable mention or afterthought, but I thought I'd suggest it since we're discussing different ranges of disturbing content. Keep up the good work!

I could be totally wrong, but I think I know what might be going on in Terrible Whiteness: The Appalachian mountains, on top of being isolated, are home to a lot of traditionally religious communities. So "traditional," as a matter of fact, that women are seen as the property of their husbands and are not permitted to be anything more than a housewife and baby machine, doing everything their spouse demands of them. Divorce is almost forbidden and they see a wife being abused as a failure of the wife rather than the husband being a monster. In the same vein, women are taught that saying no to the sexual advances of their husband for ANY reason (not wanting it, pain during sex, ect) is "selfish" as they aren't considering "his needs." That said, I believe the game's ending is depicting a marital rape , which is why the imagery is so disturbing and why the wife is always so afraid. These religious organizations don't believe marital rape exists as men are treated like they are right for forcing themselves on their wives and the wives suffer in silence.

Didn't expect to see That Dragon, Cancer on here. I hate that my first association with that beautiful game is to think of how it brought out the worst in gamers who were so triggered by having to be exposed to Christianity it was all they could bitch about, while whining that the creators requested let's plays of the game to be meaningful in some way instead of just a silent playthrough (and calling that banning let's plays of the game). I'm a nonbeliever myself, but it doesn't make me better or smarter than anyone else. God though. I tear up thinking about this game. Their oldest son graduated high school last year. But Joel will be forever five. The original ending was actually very bleak and nihilistic, but they decided against it. While I find the game's actual ending pretty cloying, it IS nice to picture Joel just spending eternity sharing pancakes with his puppy waiting for the rest of his family to join him. I don't believe it's reality, but if it's not, it doesn't really matter. What will be will be. I'm just grateful I was given the chance to get to know the Greens in some way, including Joel. It was a privilege.

The Bag of Milk games are really awesome in my opinion. Well not the mental illness part. I really enjoyed the art as well as the music, especially of the second game. It really left a mark on me because my IRL friend and crush actually dealt with problems similar to what was described in the Bag of Milk games, like anxiety and identity disorders. Although, the character of those games had it a lot worse than my friend. Also I'm really glad you mentioned Yume Nikki and Omori, those are some of my favorite surreal RPG Maker (horror) games! I'm not sure if you've done this game in this series since I haven't seen any other videos as of yet, but if you haven't, could your try to cover the RPG Maker horror game "Cat in the Box"? That game is also really good and gave me similar vibes in terms of art style to the Bag of Milk games.

not really sure how i feel about the whole "this IS what yume nikki is about" thing. kikiyama has (most likely deliberately) refused to state what yume nikki is about. yume nikki is about exploring dreams, and everything is left unexplained. and as someone who absolutely adores yn, it allowed me to form my own connection with it by seeing my own experiences in it. imo, going into yume nikki with the opinion that there is no official meaning is the best way to experience the game

Listen, I'm allowed to have an interpretation on this. I stated several times that I am not an authority, and if I just go in there and say "It could be about anything" Then leave it at that its kinda... I dunno just an unfinished thought that does not give a reason to play the game. These are bizarre and trippy games no two people will have the same experience.

@@ThatCreepyReading i don't take issue with anyone's interpretation of the game, much less having one. for me it was mainly when talking about the imagery in the dream world being based on madotsuki's life, it felt like it was being stated as fact rather than interpretation as we don't even know that much. the wording was just a bit off to me. i'll also admit my original comment was rambly and i should've just outright stated my nitpick rather than go on about,, well something i suppose.

I really liked these icebergs! If you're gonna make a 3rd installment, a game that I'd recommend to include in it is "Train". It's a Russian horror game that takes place on a train, and as the game goes on, the player gets flashbacks to the main character's life, to showcase what kind of a person he was, and with each flashback, the environment of the train changes more and more. Most of the story behind it can easily be deciphered, but some of it is difficult to make out, especially considering that there's multiple endings (I know about only 2 endings, but for all I know, there could be more).
