There are stages of minimalism that almost all of us go though. over the past year as I've been on a journey towards living a more minimalistic life I realize that there's stages of minimalism that I have gone through and looking around and talking with other people I have discovered that other people go through a lot of stages of minimalism as well well they might not be the same for everyone I believe you'll be able to relate to some most or even all of these!

I finally told my family I don't even want to do a gift exchange this year. I'm 31 years old and make my own money. I don't need anything. I just want to have a potluck and play some games with family. My dad made the comment that they'll still get me some little things like Christmas pajamas. I said I still have all the sets of pajamas that they've gotten me for the last three years. I don't need more than three sets of Christmas pajamas. I don't really even need the three that I have. 🤦😅 It's crazy what we do for the sake of gift giving and consumerism.

You missed the stage where you watch a whole lot of 'Aesthetically Minimalist' youtube videos and feel like buying all those stylish stuff, instead of using your old stuff that work perfectly fine. I almost fell into that trap, and then deleted both eBay and Etsy off my phone and tab. Now I just improvise with what I have.
@spring7643
@spring7643 3 жыл бұрын
Hell yes same happened to me. I thought 'wait a second this doesn't seem right' then I realized minimalism has become another thing to sell us. The luxurious minimalism you have to buy is not true minimalism, it goes against real minimalism which should include some level of frugality.
@marimalistic

I am happy to be not alone with this stupid idea. You are completely right. This is the wrong way. But if your old stuff is defective and you have to replace it, you can buy products with better quality and design. That’s what I learned.

These were the steps for me: 1) watched minimalism the movie 2) purging and philosophy brought to another level 3) selling stuff on ebay 4) freecycle stuff 5) no-buy year 6) old collections (rock memorabilia, watches, etc) can finally be purged 7) some sentimental stuff can finally be purged 8) grey or white the patterns and off colors 9) trade the thing that works for a better more minimal looking version of that thing 10) rounds of purging get progressively harder 11) quit job, re-eval friendships and activities and figure out how to earn passive income.

@lelexoxo303 Exactly. That's the difference between minimalism and superficiality, which I keep saying is why a lot of people do this. They don't understand minimalism, they only imitate what they see others doing, for all the wrong reasons, the main one being how it makes them look.

Me and my husband had to start minimalism. There was one time he was like I DONT HAVE SHIRTS TO WEAR! I counted all his shirts that night and counted 74 shirts and 8 pants. I told him afterwards, he was very disappointed with himself. We started to sort out his clothes, sold some and then donated most. Now he has 15 shirts and is very happy with it. He gets to wear all of them in 2 weeks (just in time for laundry) and we have so much closet space! IT is the way to go

I've moved 23 times, for the first 12 moves or so, I always ended up with more and more to move. And it was always this major, life sucking event... every time. Then we discovered minimalism, and each time we moved after that, we had less and less to move, and I can tell you of all of the things that I have owned, and therefore have gotten rid of through my minimalism journey I can say there are only a few things that I miss because they were sentimental. The rest of the stuff I don't even remember and I certainly do not miss it. Everything you own, is energy. I equate it to the same feeling you get when you clean out a closet, how somehow you yourself feel lighter. It is because you literally are shifting the physical energy of the space, thru being decluttered, and cleaned out. While I love my things, and I do definitely have a hard time not hoarding beautiful objects. I do find that it weighs me down mentally when I have too much surrounding me. Especially if it's not important things or things that bring me happiness to look at. Defend your calendar " that's super important. It's taking me too many years to figure that one out and I'm 54. Don't wait until you're 54 to defend your calendar my friends! Know what your time is worth. It's valuable.

Although this is about living with less, which I am all for, I feel like another stage could be repurposing. I feel like for some there will always be items that feel like they're so much apart of us that we may want to keep them around. For example your vase would be repainted and hold a nice little flower arrangement or something. Obviously this probably wouldn't work for you, but just something to keep in mind. I really enjoyed this video!

That's a really good point! It's fun to repurpose things too and find a new life for them. Funny how things can work so well in other areas!

I agree. I watch The Minimal Mom's channel and she says that when you display those sentimental items instead of putting them in a box, you show how much you value them.

I just subscribed! It took a 2nd major hurricane for me to finally be in the process of letting go. After spending 11 days priming and painting, still not done yet, but we started bringing some of the furniture back inside our house that is in a storage POD in our driveway and I afterwards I felt sad. I realized that I’m grieving. I’ve been asking God to help me let go & declutter my home, be careful what you ask for, lol. My mother-in-law is that person! In one week I think it was 8 times that I took it to her doctor appointments, she’s been doing this for years and they’ve never found anything wrong with her. I told my husband I cannot spend my life bringing her to the doctor, heck I’m about to be 59 years old! Thanks to your video, I know what I’m in for!! We Shall Conquer!! 🙌

Me encanto!

I needed this. Terribly so. My home is clean and tidy and everything has its place, but there is simply too much. I’m home every second of everyday, and have been for 5 years. Bed bound from chronic illness and what not. I cried last night because I am so overwhelmed from all of my things. I just looked around and cried and got upset that I don’t have the physical energy (again, illness) to do anything about it, and got into bed. Add in the elements of my attachment to many of these items are rooted in trauma and not simply memories, plus I’m trying to sell a lot of them since I do not receive disability, and it adds a whole new element of confusing stress into attempting minimalism. I’m still confused and torn, but this has helped. And it just happened to be on my timeline; I didn’t even search for it or anything of the like. But again, it was exactly what I needed, and it helped. Quite a bit. Thank you.

Have you watched Minimalist Mom here on youtube? She has helped me more than anyone or anything. It sounds like we are in similar situations. I really want to move next year into a smaller place at a long distance from where I am right now. I believe I'll be able to do it as long as I keep at it and go back to Dawn's videos when I lose steam. Good luck! 🌹
