There are some surprising facts about male cats that are unique to their gender. In this video, we will talk about 17 interesting facts about male cats.
They live shorter lives
As in humans, female cats tend to live for longer than their male counterparts. On average, the life expectancy of male cats is a year or two less than female cats.
Male cats are more likely to be left-pawed
Believe it or not, most cats have a dominant paw. Scientists have found that cats show a marked preference for the left or right front paw when it comes to knocking things off the table, walking down stairs, or reaching for food. Female cats tend to prefer their right paws, whereas males are more likely to be lefties.
Male Cats Have a Wanderlust
Unlike female cats who tend to stay around the home, male felines often have a more independent nature. They have an active sex drive, which means they are more likely to wander or roam for miles around to find females in heat. They are also more likely to get into a conflict with other male cats due to competition for territory and mates. Male cats are also curious. They like to explore and wander if given the opportunity.
Another offense attributed to male cats is the habit of urine spraying.
Male Cats Are More Affectionate
Although female cat lovers may argue this point, there does seem to be a widespread belief that males are more affectionate than females. A survey of veterinarians who specialize in cats ranked males as friendlier, and some studies support the claim that male cats are more affectionate than female cats.
They Have a Unique Mating Call
When unsprayed female cats are in heat and are ready to mate, they make a loud, distinct yowling sound to attract male cats. Interestingly, male cats also have their own unique courtship call known as caterwauling. They often make this sound to advertise their availability to female cats
They don’t make good fathers
Male cats aren't known for their fathering skills. Other than siring as many kittens as possible, they don’t generally show any interest in their newborn kittens.
Male cats bite the neck of female cats during mating
At one time or another you’ve probably witnessed a mama cat carrying her kittens around by the scruff of their neck. This form of transport is known as scruffing.
As adults, the only times a cat is held by the scruff is when they are attacked by a predator, or while two cats are mating.
Male felines do this to stop the female from moving as the mating process takes place.
Male cats are more prone to obstruction
Male cats are more likely to develop urinary tract blockages in their urethra. It is a painful and life-threatening condition that is extremely common among neutered male cats.
Most orange tabby cats are male
Orange tabbies are much more likely to be male than female. In fact, about 81 percent of orange tabbies are male, making orange female cats a bit of a rarity.
Neutered male cats live longer
Studies have found that neutered cats live 62 percent longer than intact males. This is because neutering prevents reproductive diseases such as testicular cancer, and neutered cats are less likely to roam. A neutered feline is also less inclined to fight for females and territory.
Male Cats Are More Solitary
In the wild, male felines are generally more solitary than females. Whilst the females may set up colonies to help each other rear their young, male cats remain on their own to avoid having to compete for food and females. In one study, researchers found that on average, male cats maintain territory three times larger than females.
Male cats kill kittens
Although it is not very common with domestic cats, male cats have been known to kill kittens, usually kittens that they didn't father.
It often happens if a feline’s hunting drive overcomes his parental instinct.
Another common reason is a feline’s competitive nature. In the wild, killing a rival's young would keep the rival from spreading his genes. It allows the killer cat to advance his genetic agenda and keep the competition from taking over.
Male cats have stronger urges for scratching
Because male cats are more territorial, they have a stronger urge to scratch furniture, doors, and things like carpets.
A Male Cat’s Personality Will Influence His Kittens
A male cat’s temperament has a strong influence on the way his kittens turn out. Research has shown that confident and sociable male cats produce confident and sociable kittens who are easier to socialize with people. Timid fathers on the other hand, produce timid kittens.
Male Maine Coons are giants
Maine Coons are the largest domesticated cat breed. A full-grown male Maine Coon can weigh up to 25 pounds
Male cats have a nickname
Unneutered female cats are called “queens”, and unneutered male cats are often referred to as “toms” or “tomcats.”
They are often named Oliver
The most popular male feline name in 2021 was “Oliver.”

@@JR-ut2ne you are very mistaken. You can leash train your cat. Indoor cats live much longer and painless life. I am saying this as an owner of a 4 year old male cat who has been an indoor outdoor cat all his life. I have bottlefed him since 2 weeks and just exactly a month ago he fell on a sharp fence just between us and our neighbours and impaled himself on both sides of his abdomen hrough and through by 2 rods. It injured his spinal cord and now he can't walk nor pee himself . My cat is only 4 year old and has become a paraplegic at such a young age. So trust me, one incident outdoors is enough to change your outlook on this. Stop sending you cats outside.

My first male cat was a wanderer but also a very good dad. He loved the kittens he sired. He often laid with them and cleaned them. I saw him outside once where someone had let their very young cat out, couldn't have been more than 4 months old, and he would follow him around protectively. He was such a sweet boy. I had a male tomcat years ago when neutering wasn't as common. Despite being a spoiled domestic boy, he was tougher than pretty much all the local boys, including the ferals. He managed to impregnate a huge amount of females from the nearby feral colony, and eventually he brought them all to our garden. He looked after every one of his little families, and even took food to the mums. When the kittens were born he'd sit up on the wall and watch over everyone, unless a female wanted to go hunting,in which case he'd sit on the kittens until she came back. He was the ultimate cat dad, and because my family was big and mostly lived in the countryside, the kittens always got new homes and became ratters on their farms :)

I had a 23 year old male orange tabby that passed away a few years ago and he was still running and jumping all over the place until his last day. My current cat is an 11 year old male named Radar (he's named after the character from the TV show M*A*S*H) and he acts like a 2 year old child. He's always into something and he is glued to me. Getting your animals fixed in general does help with temperament as well as decreased risk for certain health issues and that's just not for male cats or dogs that also goes for females as well.

@@Lisa-cn2uu He was an indoor only cat. Indoor cats tend to live a lot longer then outdoor cats. Its because if they're outside, they're more at risk to catch certain sicknesses and they're more at risk of getting hurt by vehicles, dogs or wild animals. I had a 18 y/o cat as well, he was indoor also. They both ate Friskies. Taking them to the vet for check ups and whatever vaccines they needed also played a factor.

Had 2 orange Maine Coons growing up, they both lived to be about 15-16. Absolutely the sweetest bunch of boys ever. Figaro would always sit with you no matter where you went, and Sebastian had a unique tic where if you sneezed or even faked a sneeze around him he would “bless” you with a small tiny meow. My cat Winston was 3 when I got Cooper, at the time my youngest, around 9 weeks old. Winston would wrap himself around Cooper and bathe him and play with him, always protecting him. He was like the adoptive dad to my kitty. Unfortunately Cooper passed away at a year old due to his health conditions; Winnie searched the house for weeks looking for Cooper... It was heartbreaking because Winston became very sad, but he slowly recovered, alongside myself. The fact he helped father my little kitten was incredible. Now he looks to grooming and cuddling his older brother Louis, who mostly enjoys the affection, especially a good cuddle session with his little brother. Even to this day, if I say "Coopy", Winnie's ears go crazy and he purrs, I hope he is remembering the little boy kitty he loved so dearly. Male cats steal my heart; They are so affectionate. If you treat them right and give them all your love, you will have one incredible bond. I thank my cat Winston for being an amazing adopted father, and an amazing brother and son. Cats are wonderful.

My male MacKenzie (just died at almost 19) was rather indifferent and independent from me during the first several years of life; he did sleep with me (top cat, always slept at the head of the bed and his sib sisters had to sleep where they could fit in). But when he got to about 8 or 9 he became noticeably more interested in me, affectionate, and down right intrusive if I was busy . Eventually he got very smooshy, rubbing his face all over mine and wanting to hold my hand just before he fell asleep (he was polydactyl so had big hands with thumbs, and would squeeze my fingers several times before settling down). . And he and all the other male cats I've had were left-pawed.

So how old was this cat when he died? 18? 19? 20? EXACT AGES WORK BETTER THAN ALMOST!!! Another example? YOU ARE AN IDIOT NOT ALMOST AN IDIOT. You are one!!!! I can definitely agree with males being more friendly, after working at a cat shelter for several years, it is also often the case that the most affectionate males are more aggressive to other cats, most of the males who would start fights with other cats were also the friendliest to people. My cat had a urethral blockage, the signs can actually show several weeks before it happens, he started randomly peeing on the bed comforter sheet over my legs, after the obstruction happened and he got treatment, he stopped peeing on the bed completely.

My orange cat, originally named "Boy" now called "Daddy Boy" is the best daddy cat I've ever heard of. He stayed with Momma all through her labor and helped clean each kitten and has taken care of them since day one. I was so afraid he'd hurt them but he was so gentle and would even roll over to try to let them nurse. It was so adorable. The kittens are now over a yr old and he still cleans them regularly and they all sleep in a big cat pile. He still hangs back and let's them eat first, runs around and plays with them. Meanwhile momma kitty is over the kittens, lol and will hiss and/or give them a swat when they get on her nerves. It's so odd to me, the way he is the primary caregiver. I had a female orange tabby! She could be temperamental and skittish but she was very loving and loyal. Generally I've noticed males tend to be a bit more affectionate than females, however my current kitty is female and she's the most affectionate cat I've ever had, so it definitely varies a lot by personality. I literally don't think she even knows how to be mad, I've never once seen her hiss, growl, put her ears back etc. She's just nonstop sweet.

As someone who's had at least a dozen cats over the past 40 years, it's been my experience that male cats are usually friendlier and more out going, while females tend to be more aloof. The two meanest cats I've ever seen were not only female but also solid white (they're weren't related to each other). I've often wondered if that's a common thing among white cats. This is all assuming we're talking about neutered/spayed cats.

The affection thing is somewhat true, I've had a good mix of male and female cats and the males tend to seek me out more. Male cats are also more likely to be clingy, they want to be around you more often. It took my little girl a year before she was affectionate at all where as her brother came around after a week or so. Also spraying may not happen with un nuetured cats, my current (inside) male is not fixed (mostly because I had a panic attack and thought too much about him dying on the table.) He is not spraying which is super nice.

I can absolutely agree with the male cat affection point. The two most affectionate things in my life, (including girlfriends and dogs) were my two favourite male moggies. And the males being prone to urethra blockage almost made me cry. That's how I lost my last guy. The earlier tom, was a big ginger guy, he'd been a stray left by previous occupants and once we became good mates, he'd climb up on my lap and positively drool with joy as I scratched and petted him.

Part of the biting while mating is to hold the female in place and prevent her from biting the male because it's very uncomfortable on the female's part. Cat penises are barbed, which also serves to make mating more effective, but causes a fair amount of discomfort or even pain for the female.

Well one interesting fact is that after I had my boy cats neutered they calmed down more and my latest boy doesn't pick on his sister as much. Before he was fixed he played too rough with her. My girl has a light touch when she kneads. Manny2 is heavy handed. He plays harder than my girl. My first was a girl, 2 and 3 were boys but not at the same time and now I have a brother and sister. I was thinking just a male but fell in love with both and my girl is fixed too. My girl is more affectionate, my boy acts like he couldn't care less until he demands cuddling and he head bunts me hard. My girl is a light head bunter. Manny2 has always been big. Built like a tank and heavy. My girl is more big length wise. She has the smaller head. Both have kissable foreheads and neither mind. Manny2 is more adventurous. He's more the juvenile delinquent. His sister is more a studier of things. She'll tilt her head if something interests her and studies it. Manny2 will pounce. I love them both equally. My two previous boys were Siamese so they don't look muscular in general. More sleek. My two aren't so you can tell more by looking. Manny2 is the wrestler and looks it. He's more dominant but my girl doesn't tolerate that much any more. More to hug with Manny2. Money is more delicate. She took right to me. It took two months for Manny2. He's a sweet boy when he's not getting into mischief while my girl prefers a nice warm lap. But love? Both give equally. He likes to nip my right knee a lot. Never the left. He's my only male who stretches up a leg to get a back rub and head rub. But their meows are the same but Manny2 does it louder. Money is more sing song. I love them both to pieces.

Interesting facts! I love cats and have owned many for decades! We had a mother cat who lived to be 20 and she used to have kittens 4 times a year with 4 - 6 kittens per litter so that was a lot of kittens in our home when I was growing up. We gave them away for free and they all found good homes! Sadly, I lost my two beautiful cats in 2020 one female, one male and both were 13 1/2 years old, They had great personalities. Still miss them, terribly! Recently I've spent a lot of time with my granddaughter's beautiful cat, a Snowshoe Siamese who is male. He is so affectionate and loves to be held like a baby. I may get a male one, too! He has blue eyes, one slightly crossed and a typical Adolph Hitler black mustache under his black nose, slightly off to the side. His name is Kumo which means "Cloud" in Japanese because he's so soft. And he has long white whiskers so I also call him, "Adolph, Fu Manchu" because Emperor Fu Manchu had very long whiskers!

I have one intact male (2yr) and one neutered (unknown age, shelter cat). They get along very well and love to cuddle (each other and their humans). We even took in a kitten for a couple months last summer. Both my boys acted as great fathers, caring for and protecting their kitten, but also carefully teaching her when she was acting out. She was given to a trusted friend before 4mo of age to protect her from getting pregnant (though my intact male was showing no romantic interest). Intact males are often given a bad rep when they just need proper care. Not to mention the likelihood of testicular cancer in cats is very rare and can typically be solved with regular vet visits & surgical removal (if it ever does happen). My intact male is healthier and stronger (but thinner) than my neutered boy, despite being feed the same diet and given the same lifestyle.

I’ve had two big boys and both of them are/were the friendliest, most cuddly babies. Both were neutered and neither ever sprayed. The one who’s still alive loves to just go out on the back catio and lay in the stream of sunlight that comes through the shades. The one who died had a urinary blockage (that’s not what killed him) and was in the vet for 4 days. The minute I saw him struggling in the box I scooped him up and hustled to the vet. That was expensive and traumatic.

My aunt and uncle found 3 strays/ferals near their house once and my uncle being a cat person adopted them, one of them was pregnant. Then she had 2 (I think) kittens (surviving, more were born) but one of them had infection in his eyes when the mother finally brought them over to them... they saved the little one's eyes but he had poor vision on one (I think the other healed completely), and one of the older cats (surprisingly not the mother but another male so either a father or uncle when I use human terminology) is with him all the time as if he knew he can't see properly. They wanted to give the kittens away and found out these two are inseparable now. So in the end they keep the other one too and have them all.

I had a female orange tabby years ago and I let her have one litter of kittens before spaying her. She came right to me on my bed when she was in labor and gave birth with my assistance, lying on my bed. She absolutely asked for and wanted my full support and participation. My son watched part of it too and he shed a few tears of joy. I was so honored by her trust in me and I eventually got all her babies adopted out to good homes. She was such a sweetie. I usually prefer male cats but she was one of my best ever cats. My two boy cats that I have currently are great but one is very shy of strangers, has a sensitive stomach and has had a urinary obstruction that nearly killed him. He does want a lot of affection from me ever day and is very sweet and also talkative. He’s the smaller of the two. My tuxedo cat Max is huge, confident with people and big foodie too. Love them!

This was explained to me by a Veterinarian. The problem of a blocked urethra can be prevented by feeding your cat food that's low in ash content. What you want is a food with 3% or less ash. Check the ingredients. Purina is notorious for high amounts of ash in their products. Cats need tiny amounts of ash in their diet, too much can mess up your male cats urinary system bad, bad.

I've owned 14 cats over my life. (160 acres, no neighbours) The most affectionate female Ive had was about as affectionate as the least affectionate male. Of these, 5 of the males would lick human faces and one will tug your socks until you sit still so he can groom you. Have never had a female cat do this. 2 of the boys will try to make your arm into a pillow as they sleep. They like to be cradled next to your face at night... Having said that My favorite cat is a half feral female who spontaneously started to feed the males as we adopted them, never having a litter of her own. She has raised the affectionate boys into the fur babies we have today. Her affection was by far the most difficult to obtain as she is perpetually alert and skittish even if one makes a sudden move or slight cough or does anything unexpected... The reward of having this wild young, adoptive mother cat come willingly to push her small face into mine... :D

I have had many cats as well and all my current cats anyways (2 female 3 male) they are all super affectionate one of the girls and boys (siblings) are incredibly affectionate so I think it varies from cat to cat and breed

I’ve never had a female cat, but my boys are delightful and well tempered most of the time! They are very affectionate too. My one cat sat with me and watched the video 😹

with my cats i have noticed that my 2 male cats are more after my mother for affection and the 2 female ones are more after me... but even so all 4 are very affectionate and seek company from both of us

My boy Grumbles is so affectionate. He lets me cradle him in my arms like a baby and I can pick him up whenever I feel like and rub his belly whenever. He’s such a good boy ❤️🥰

Such a weird thing to say. I hope you won’t flag a cat because of it’s sex, without even trying to get to know it first.

I've always preferred female cats myself having had both. Female's tend to pick a favourite human more than males I've found.
