@@markdotinc8371 I agree, problem is there's so many more rentors with bad landlords than ones with good landlords. For every 1 or 2 small scale landlorda with a few duplex's that they really care about, there's 10 large scale investors with 10 20 unit buildings each, who run them like complete slums while charging luxury prices. The government usually makes limiting rules to appease the publics outcry for affordable housing, but they end up only effecting the small scale individuals and the rich just get richer making more slums while rentors feel even more trapped because they'll never be able to own something themselves as REAL real estate sky rockets as it becomes a rarity compared to over priced rooms in large buildings.

In Marinaleda, Spain, housing is even more radical. Anyone who wants a house approaches a town council. If the person is willing and able to provide their own labor to build the house, the council will help them with funds, architects, material, and labor. The person owns the land for free, but is not allowed to sell or profit from it. Finally, the council and the person decide on a monthly payment plan that tends to be around $16-22 which goes toward municipal revenue.

@Gray Thomas because they do shit like the above. Because they exploit people by preying on those with a lower income who dont have the finances required to put a deposit down on a property and get a mortgage. They then charge those people twice the monthly amount of the mortgage payments on that same property and then use that money to buy off the house that someone else is living in. Meanwhile the tenents have basically no rights and can be kicked out at any time and if any issues arise, they are entirely at the mercy of their landlord and whether they can be bothered to fix a problem. Making profit on someone else's basic need for housing is bad idk what to tell u. At least when the bank does it, you eventually OWN that property.

What noel described was a rent strike. There are a lot of attempts at that here in Los Angeles, and generally they don't get covered and the police/swat are called to forcefully evict the tenants. It's a noble thought but the police exist to protect property and its owners, not to serve the people or make judgements about when to intervene. At a strike over the past year, an entire building rallied against a slumlord, and a group of officers kitted for war dragged screaming mothers and children from the building and tossed them onto the streets DURING the eviction moratorium.

ah yes it would be much better if the state could seize the property of *not*people. it would be much better if the state say... assigned where everyone should live and no one actually owned anything..... well other then the state of course... that would be so much better! so instead of having a woman thrown in the street for squatting illegaly on someones property she would simply be sent to a *work camp* for anti tenant be behavior... and for have *land lord* affiliations. and for good measure, send her child to the gulag as well.....right? much better! no one owns anything! and the state gets to decide everything!

That sucks man. Don’t worry though, the housing crisis won’t last forever. All the companies are buying up all the property right now because during the pandemic they stopped producing lumber/other building materials, making houses more expensive and therefore rent more expensive. But once that production of building materials catches up and the price of wood drops, you’ll be able to buy a house for way cheaper than right now. Hopefully.

I never have any sympthay for landlords. What people fail to realize is that being a landlord is a business and a lot of businesses fail. But landlords think they will just continue to make money. Also, you can afford to have other properties when most people can't even buy one place. I hate when people say their job is "being a landlord". That's AT BEST a part time job. And most of the time they don't even have to do anything except collect checks every month. My landlord is decent but I showed her where our sink was starting to get moldy around the edges and needs to be replaced and she won't do it until it gets "really bad". So I've started leaving water around the edge of the sink so it will get worse. We also need a whole new shower cover (it's not tiled but it's that cheap plastic covering) she keeps telling me the person coming to fix it should be by in a few weeks. It's been a few months - I talked to her two weeks ago and it's still "a few weeks". Her crackhead son in law tried to caulk it and did a horrible job. He also mows the yard and does a horrible job - mows over flowers (even though I've put up little fencing around them so he knows to not mow there, he will rip them out and mow over stuff I'm trying to grow. He won't ever use a leaf blower after he's done so unless I sweep my sidewalk and steps our shoes track in wet grass clippings. We leave our shoes by the door always but still. He also will just mow around our lawn furniture. It's cheap and easy to pick up but he won't ever do it. I move the furniture around so he will mow it. I've tried telling my landlord but she just kind of tells me "yeahhh... he's just helping me and doing what he can."
