I'm doing a refresh of the garden design. So far I added in the spiral aloe and the tulips. I haven't fully fleshed out my idea for this garden bed, but I want to use a lot of different types of aeoniums. This will be my aeonium display area. I'll show you the plants we can work with in the next episode and maybe you can help me plan this bed!

Great to see you back!! Your kids have grown so much, it seems,...WOW! And, your garden looks so full with texture and color! Word of caution with leaving your shade cloths up, though... The lowest point, where each one sags, will be where water collects and drips down, causing whatever is underneath to be disturbed. If you get a hard or persist rain, that drippng water can become pretty strong and dig up the soil beneath it, ultimately messing up your design and/or potentially harming any plants in the immediate area. I've had that happen before and it's disheartening, to say the least.
@Cerriscapades3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the word of caution Frank! We have lots of rains in summer too, and it did fine back then. But then again the shade cloth is probably drying up quickly for it to matter. I'll see how it goes, then adjust as needed.

Hi Chuck , I'm so glad to see your back I've been hoping you would start making videos , I live in South Africa and there are very few garden KZbin and your on the same season as us , I was just curious to know why your succulents go into dormancy in winter ? I was under the impression that winter is echeveria and aneomium growing period ? Mine are definitely not dormant they have all opened up and have all currently had growth especially my aneomium

I realised something - you have been posting a lot less since you shared your KZbin channel with your new (at the time) co-workers!! I can tell a bit more nervous you have been in your less frequent, recent videos. You were so confident before you told them about your channel! Even more cinematic and stuff. Oh well. Just know that they probably aren't watching your videos! I know some of my friends online usernames but I don't ever bother to check them unless they are talking and tell me to go look at something - then I do, otherwise life is too busy. Anyhows, love ya. I learnt a lot from you, ya know. I've been teaching my family and friends the stuff that your videos have taught me. You should see their faces when I start talking about the lateral meristems lol.

He's BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What will you do when the aeoniums go dormant? I don't have any, but from what I've seen, they shrink? If so, maybe you should fill the spaces with smaller succulents?? About future bulbs you decide to plant in drifts, I reccomend sedum (Phedimus, Petrosedum, and Sedum) as they have shallow roots, don't need much nutrients, and don't care if they get damaged or moved.

I'm planning for the next episode to be aeonium-centric, so I'll address your questions and more. But I won't let you wait that long! So with aeoniums, during the heat of summer they kinda shrink in the sense that the rosettes close up. The leaves curl up into a ball to protect the growing tip (apical meristem). Many of the older leaves are shed. The combination of those two results in a tiny ball of leaves. This way the rate of evaporation is drastically reduced. Only the outer leaves may get burnt, but at least the tender parts are shaded and intact. Also yeah I definitely agree that putting some groundcover on top of them is the way to go. Then just let the tulips pierce through them when they're blooming!

I often see that when you dig you don't remove the stone mulch made up of small pebbles. You let them mix with the soil and then put a new mulch after the work is done. Each time you may end with a higher percentage of pebbles. How much does it affect the properties of your soil and affect maintenance work? Do you periodically sift the pebbles with a fine mesh and reuse them as mulch?
