Great video as always. Elite athletes -- please do not forget some of the most elite athletes on the planet are professional level motocross riders. Average 175+ BPM heart rate for 35 minutes during a race x 2 times on race day. Practice days of 175+ BPM heart rate for 60+ minutes x 2 sessions a day. Have some 20 to 25 year old riders that hold a 190+ BPM heart rate for nearly the entire 60+ minutes. Never found any other athlete in any sport that can match. Plus it is a 230lbs motorcycle, not a wimpy 25lbs or less tour de France bike or 30lbs down hill mountain bike. Add in G forces, weather, use of every muscle in the body....and the whole time risk of death

HIIT for both aerobic and strength/resistance is perhaps the single biggest biohack we have at our disposal. Sheer laziness leave the vast majority to not do what is required, yet those mortality statistics are stark and clearly show how important it is.

Another great podcast, thank you! I’m that 57 years trying to fight “gravity” as you call it. What are your thoughts on the various algorithms that attempt to estimate V02 max, like the one on my Garmin Fenix 6 Pro? What do you use to test your V02 max, do you use the PNOE system? If so would you recommend it! If not, do you know anything about it?

The ex smoker cohort interests me, I.e. the risk versus the duration between now and their quit date and the duration of their status as a smoker.

I am loving how bob is edited to be on the screen 😂 (or am I wrong?). Nice touch

Yeah they've done that for every guest so far. Filming the screen usually gives bad results. So overlaying their video feed onto the screen in post gives an extra camera angle without losing quality.

I love Peter's content and, unfortunately, the conclusions from this video are wrong! Peter made a mistake here (which goes to show that this stuff is not easy). There is selection bias in the data that may not be completed reverted simply by improving VO2MAX. For example, assume I am in the "low" category because I am both a couch potato and also because I have a genetic anomally that makes my blood circulation inneficient, then even if I improve my exercise habits and improve my VO2MAX, I still have the genetic condition and may never achieve the extra lifespan obtainable by people who didn't have that problem to begin with. In other words, simply exercising more may not balance out all the factors that caused higher mortality in the "low" category. I don't know if this was addressed in the full video, but, as is, this is a mistaken interpretation of the data and should be corrected. You may not get a full 5x improvement by going from "low" to "elite".

Looks like 20% of the effort will get you 80% of the benefit. Figure 2a or 2b, redraw with a linear instead of log scale on the y axis will show how stark the benefit. Compare to the all cause mortality benefit of taking a statin, not even close.

very true. I think attia overestimates how much exercise is needed if we care only about longevity. and let's also not forget that you cant do caloric restriction if you are exercising as much as he does

Nope. If you look at the hazard ratios when moving from one group to the next it is approximately the same for every jump
