One of the great characters of my student days was Thomas 'Dick'Noble, Bandmaster of the 16th/5th into the 1950s and for some time before. He had studied horn with Aubrey Brain, deping for him at London shows such as 'Rose Marie', and was one of the fanfare trumpeters at the Cornonation of Queen Elizabeth II. He had done it all - played under Elgar, Holst, Vaughan Williams, Ethel Smyth . . . . . Dick received the MBE for services to military music. On on occasion when Dame Ethel Smyth was conducting a rehearsal he fluffed a solo passage. The bandmaster tore him off a strip, upon which Dame Ethel told him to leave the lad alone - he was doing his best. It was a long time before he lived that one down!

My grandad was in the 21st at Omdurman. He was a euphonium player, too!

A poignant moment. The last hurrah for both of these fine regimental bands. Both look pretty small by this point. for a time their history lived on in the band of the Royal Lancers until that saga ended in 2006. Now they are submerged within the Light Cavalry Band.

Are you not a bit embarrassed by how dodgy it sounds?
