Eliminate unsightly gaps on the back of your Mosaic Crochet projects by using an anchored double crochet (Adc) stitch instead. I invented this stitch many years ago while designing some mosaic crochet patterns and I’m excited to share it with you today!
Anchored double crochet (Adc) instructions:
Insert hook in both loops (or in back loop only) of next st on previous row and draw up a lp, YO, insert hook in front lp of st one row below same st and draw up a lp, YO and draw through 2 lps on hook, YO and draw through all 3 lps on hook.

The unanchored crochet stitches on the back of Mosaic crochet really bother me, so I hadn’t even tried to do it. This, however, takes care of that problem beautifully.💕 Now maybe I will give mosaic a try! Thank you so much! You are amazing!👍🏼

HI. I love this stitch. I tried pulling the yarn through three loops then the two loops and the stitch looks more like a standard double crochet. It also puffs the stitch out a little more on the bottom and gives better coverage. I love your videos and you can teach an old crocheter new tricks.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for commenting, JoAnn! I'm an old crocheter, too! I actually started working the last Adc in my row like you're doing it: pulling through 3 lps first, then the last 2 lps to finish the stitch. It helps the Adc move to the right a little and helps eliminate the gap between the last 2 stitches in the row. I'll give it a try throughout the row and see if I like it better for working my Adc throughout my projects! Happy Mosaic Crocheting to you!

@@TheCrochetArchitect Thank you. I am one of those people who tries something and then adapts it. The other thing I was trying was on the reversible mosaic when I inserted the hook on the wrong side I chained one and then made the blsc. In other words I tried a long single crochet. I have been crocheting since my grandmother taught me almost 60 years ago. If you ever need a pattern tester I am volunteering for the job. I retired a year ago and have the time now.

Just finished my first mosaic blanket and I wish I had seen this tutorial before I started! As I was crocheting I kept thinking it would be so much easier to keep track of stitches if I didn't have to keep going back to count how many I had to skip when I did multiple dc stitches. This would eliminate that and ensure that stitches didn't get dropped. Definitely going to use it for my next project!

This is a very, very helpful stitch with mosaic crochet, it's like a "sc - front loop double together", as you're doing a partial single crochet, which anchors the double crochet. The back of the fabric looks soooo much better, and the stitches are much more secure. These types of anchoring stitches are also useful in other types of crochet, like overlay crochet, with either front loop or post stitches, where you want the stitch to either lay flat on top of the fabric, or you want at least the top of the stitch to be flat on the top of the fabric.

I hope you don't mind my suggesting an alternative to the anchored dc. It is a good alternative, but those stitches do look a little different than the regular dc. When I come to a sc that is roughly centered over a long series of dc (in row below), I extend that dc through the current stitch down the back and into the top loop of a stitch 2 rows below (same color). I make the stitch a tad looser, but it looks good front and back and does the trick in fixing the gap! For an especially long series, this could be done spaced over the series. Try it!

Jewelie, I don't mind you suggesting an alternative to my anchored dc at all! However, I don't understand what you're trying to describe. How can you insert your hook into the top loop of a stitch 2 rows below if you're going down the back of a stitch? Wouldn't your hook be on the back side of your stitches? Are you working a new dc or a sc? I guess I'd need to see it to understand what you're doing. Are you working a spike dc?
@jeweliedee4299
@jeweliedee4299 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheCrochetArchitect Insert the hook into the back loop of the current stitch as you get ready to make the sc, and then keep going down the back of the work with your hook to catch the top loop of the stitch 2 rows below (again, on the back of the work), then yo and complete the sc as usual, just a little bit looser.

@@TheCrochetArchitect I don't use it for every stitch, just every 3rd or 4th, depending on how long the series of dc's is. It sort of just tacks the flap up to the work. Nothing looks different on the front, and only slightly different on the back. But the back isn't really pretty anyway!

How wonderful, Susan! Glad I found you tonight. I just started Mosaic Crochet a couple weeks ago. I saw that you plan on making more videos. I was wondering what are the other mosaic crochet techniques? I'm enjoying the overlay technique but always interested in new things. I started to watch another one of your videos and saw this one on the side and thought hum I should watch this one first before continuing on incase I like this technique. Well, I do like this and your teaching ability. I believe in watching 3 videos from someone before deciding if I want to subscribe BUT I have watched less than 10 minutes of the two videos combined and I am going to click subscribe and the bell. I will be watching anything you put up on Mosaic Crochet and maybe other things as well but I'm hooked on Mosaic now. Thank you ever so much and God Bless.

You're very welcome, Rashami! You can try what sounds like an anchored single crochet (I've never done it, but it's probably possible). I would make it just as tall as a double crochet stitch by pulling the 2nd loop up taller. I'm not sure if it will be as straight of a stitch (up and down) as the anchored double crochet, though.

Is there some reason the anchoring pull through stitch can’t substitute for the yarn over in dc and then you are dealing with the normal 3 stitches on hook?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Judith, I'm not sure if I understand your question. Are you asking if you can insert the hook into the back loop of the sc below and draw up a loop, which would substitute for the yarn over that starts the dc? I'm not sure if it would be a tall enough stitch without the yarn over. I'll have to give it a try (or you can try it and see what the result would be). I filmed another alternate Adc video that you can watch to see if you like that technique better. You can watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKa3mX2AeLhrsNU. Happy crocheting!

Thanks for this tudor! Like it a lot. I have a question - Does this anchored double chrochet stitches use more yarn than the "original" double mosaic ?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, Monica! Yes. The anchored double crochet stitch uses a little more yarn than a regular double crochet because it has an extra yarn over. It may add as much as 10-20% more yarn to an overlay mosaic crochet project, depending on how many dc or Adc there are in the pattern. I hope this helps. Happy Mosaic Crocheting to you!

Do you have a video showing how you do another anchored dc into an already anchored dc of the same color. If that makes sense?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I don't think I show working a row with an anchored dc into an anchored dc 2 rows below in any of my videos, Andrea. It works just like a regular drop down dc worked in overlay mosaic crochet, though. You'll use the back loop of the back loop sc in the row below (in the opposite color) and the front loop of the anchored dc 2 rows below (in the same color). You can work the first and last anchored dc in every other row into both loops of the stitch in the row below for more stability and the other stitches into just the back loop. If you work an anchored dc in the first and last stitches in every other row, then you'll end up with a nice line on the edge (made with the color you use in the first and last anchored dc). I did this in my Dueling Diamonds Throw and Wedding Ring Blanket patterns. Then I worked rounds of sc around the whole blanket/throw. I also used my COM technique to eliminate the ends on each row so I didn't have to work a double border. I hope this makes sense. Happy crocheting to you.

@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! The Adc won't work for Inset Mosaic Crochet because you don't have a sc to work into (it's a chain space instead). However, if you use a Spike dc instead of a regular dc, you can encase the chains instead of working in front of them, making the project reversible! Check out my video on the Spike dc to learn how: kzbin.info/www/bejne/inPOc4qwmb-agpo.

Isa, I'd be happy to put some special mosaic stitches on my long list of crochet videos to make. I didn't design the leopard print pattern that you purchased and I'm not sure exactly what stitches the designer used in the pattern. The designer of the leopard print mosaic pattern is Alexis Sixel. Her pattern listing on Ravelry says the pattern is intermediate to advanced, but comes with step-by-step photos for the special stitches she used. I'd suggest asking Alexis to explain the special stitches to you, since it'll be many months until I get around to doing a video like this! If you're not in any hurry, you can keep checking my KZbin channel. But if you'd like to make your leopard print project sooner rather than later, I'd suggest you contact Alexis Sixel through Ravelry.

Okay - I absolutely LOVE this method! Thank you so much for sharing it. It’s amazing. However, I’m having an issue that I hope you can help me with. This is only my second mosaic project, but first with the anchored stitch, so I’m not sure what the problem may be. Using the anchored stitch, my work is shifting into a parallelogram. Instead of the sides looking like this: l l They are looking like this: / / I’ve already done 6.5”! The last row I did I tried hooking in the opposite direction of the lean. I haven’t worked far enough to see if that will rectify the problem. Have you run across this? Do you have a solution? This did not happen when I made my first project (no anchor stitch), but I also am using different yarn. Help!!! Please. 😊
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, Joy! I'm glad you like my Adc stitch! The only thing I can think of that might create that lean is working in both loops instead of the back loop when drawing up the first loop for the Adc. There's much less lean of the stitches in Mosaic Crochet when working the majority of your stitches in the back loop only. Maybe the different yarn is also adding to the lean. Is it a "Z" twist or an "S" twist? Is it the same twist as the other yarn you were using?

Ugh. 😔 I just did another 11 rows and honestly, I don’t know if it made a difference. It made my stitches a little tighter, and they seem stacked better. Maybe if I went further I’d be able to tell, but I’m going to frog this now and start again some other time. I’m frustrated. I love this idea and I want it to work, but I need a break. Now the problem is how do I frog this with keeping the yarn in order?!? 37 rows, half of which are a striping yarn!
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 3 жыл бұрын
Keeping the yarn in order might be tricky! You could try using hang tags, if you have them (or make your own with scraps of paper and string/crochet thread) to label each row of yarn as you frog it. Or you could put 2 rows at a time (dark and light) in plastic bags and label them with Rows 36 & 37, etc. By the way, have you watched my COM video for Continuous Overlay Mosaic Crochet? With that technique, you wouldn't end up with separate strands of yarn when frogging! You don't finish off at the end of each row. You carry the yarn across to the beginning and work over it on the next row. Then it's available to use again on the next row of that color. If you take a photo of your mosaic piece that's leaning before you frog it and contact me through my website, I'd be happy to take a look at it and see if I can figure out why it's leaning so much!

@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like my Adc, Phyllis. You do an Adc into an Adc just like you work one into a sc 2 rows below. You insert your hook into either both loops or just the back loop of the stitch in the previous row and draw up a loop. Then you yarn over, insert your hook into the front loop of the Adc 2 rows below and draw up a loop. Then you finish the Adc just like the other Adc. The only thing you can't do is work an Adc into an Adc in the previous row. It has to be worked into the Adc 2 rows below, not in the previous row. Give it a try and let me know if you have any more questions about it. Happy crocheting to you!
