I cannot even begin to imagine the skill and ingenuity that went into building this treasure. Keep it in the family as an heirloom in honour of the constructor.

Just finished replacing the valves in my 2.5 litre engine after a timing belt snapped. Imagine having to do one of these! Building this was brilliant but to me the geniuses are the people who design these from concept in the first place - the more I learn the more I realise how little I know.

One of the smoothest running "scale" engines I've ever seen, & a take off of my favorite powerplant, the P&W R2800.

WOW! I can only imagine the many parts to this engine that had to be made and carefully machined by hand. Must have took some time. what a fantastic work of art! I'd like to see somebody make a 1/4 scale Pratt & Whitney R4360 , wouldn't that be a challenge!

Honestly I'm flabbergasted, I'm a amateur machinist, with the most basic mill and lathe, and I could no more make this than fly to the moon. I don't even know anybody who could. Where do you learn this skill set anymore? I went the route of college and engineering/flight school to satisfy my interest of mechanical things. But I always have thought I should have been a machinist instead, but at the time and now for sure, there is no way to gain this skill/knowledge. My kids can't even take shop anymore...and I live in the country with wheat farmers for crying out loud!
@DetroitEngineWorks7 жыл бұрын
Me and my father are both machinist and he is also a retired tool & die makers. He retired in 1993 with 36 years of experience. He has been retired now for 24 and has never stopped machining (still works in his own shop) so he has about 60 total years of experience. I am 55 still working as a machinist myself now going on 37 years. My father is 81 years old and he can still do more with a lathe and milling machine then most ever dreamed of.

Plans for this 18 cylinder radial & a 9 cylinder available from Lee Hodgson at Ageless Engines
@KO-pk7df8 ай бұрын
That's seriously amazing. It sounds great. I wonder whare the 9 post distributor caps came from or did they custom make them? 3d print or what?
@DetroitEngineWorks8 ай бұрын
My father thanks you for the compliment. He machined the distributor cap if I remember correctly from either acetal or Delrin round stock.

@adrianlarkins72599 жыл бұрын
That needs brains, skill, experience, devotion, money and a well equipped workshop. Brilliant. I would love to see it in model aircraft but I can understand the reluctance. However, here's a thought. I think I'm right in saying this engine was fitted to the Sherman Tank. That would not be dangerous. Anyone got a 1/5 scale Sherman?

just one question .Is CNC required to make such a piece?
@DetroitEngineWorks7 жыл бұрын
No CNC, all done with manual milling machine and lathe and a few jigs for machining the one piece heads.
