I will never, never understand why the American production cut the epic chorus at the end.

Maybe so it would be more personal, setting the focus and responsibility on Phoebus and Esmeralda. There are plenty of strong booming songs in the soundtrack, but not many quiet or subtle ones.

The Media Angel I blame the Entr’acte and In a Place of Miracles for that(especially the latter, which was trying to mash together everything that both Balancing Act and Out of Love’s reprise were able to do successfully here, but all within a last minute-feeling window that I felt came off as wasting time and rather dumb plot-wise since Frollo’s LITERALLY A FEW FEET AWAY, WHY AREN’T YOU ROMANIANS ESCAPING ALREADY!!!!). Also, I miss City Under Siege as the opening number of Act 2, which would make the shift in tone fallowing either A Guy Like You or Flight Into Egypt come less off of left field(especially with Frollo’s attempted rape before Someday in the American script). Either way, regardless of which version of Someday is used(though I prefer this version, musically), I just wish this song came after Made of Stone, not before it. Made of Stone is more of a “personal statement of one’s individual flaws” kind of song, and Someday is more of a “personal assessment of the world’s flaws as a whole” song. The way it is in the American version, it comes off to me like Made of Stone is basically a mean spirited f**k you towards Someday’s more complete sense of hope. As if it's representing the people who hated that Quasimodo didn’t get loved back by Esmeralda, and that they are blowing mean spirited raspberries at her for breaking his heart(Basically, in my mind, the same kind of fans like those of Les Miserables, who call Marius an idiot for not loving Eponine instead of adult Cosette, and act like adult Cosette's EVIL for the former reason and for being so nice in the boring sense). I get that they’re trying to pass the American version as “Based on the Victor Hugo novel, with songs from the Disney film”, but that boat of making an accurate adaptation of the book(which is very misanthropic as well as depressing in tone, to the point where a song like this would be very far fetched) has already sailed when they focused more on humanizing the tone of the story, made up the whole arsonist hunt that ends and starts both acts, making Esmeralda and Phoebus more progressive and likable respectively(in the book Esmeralda’s a stupidly naive 16 year old with no sense of social justice, and Phoebus is an engaged and low brained “Gaston” type womanizer with no redeeming qualities), and writing well beloved songs that hone in on those social justice qualities that wasn’t really a thing in the original book(heck, the book was basically about the Notre Dame cathedral itself, and the importance of architecture as a sharper of France’s cultural identity in a pre printing press world, with the whole barbarism of humanity tale literally written to draw interest in the lengthy screed of architecture. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3qsiKxpib9km6s). Even this production(which I personally prefer for it’s book and direction by James Lapine, and the orchestrations for the score: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roGblIBshreed5Y kzbin.info/www/bejne/epquooisq7x3bKcis) is trying to be a balanced mesh of the Disney film and the Victor Hugo novel(Frollo mentioning being a preist during this show's version of his duet with Quasimodo[in reference to being the archdeacon in the book] before his sensing of Paris's corruption inspired him to become a judge, and Phoebus starting off as a womanizer as his book counterpart before being inspired by Esmeralda's words to become more like his Disney film counterpart throughout the story, etc.), which I feel to be the best move for the current version of this show(as well having an ensemble of 24 people be the congregation and choir, not separate them as 16 people doing all the heavy work of narrating and playing the villagers, Romanies, and saints, while a 32 person wall of sound at the back of the stage sits around and does nothing when not needed, so as to not have to deal with the Union refusing to have to fund THAT many people PLUS the orchestra and production crew. Just a personal thought.). (I did like that they returned Frollo to his role as the archdeacon in the American version, though, but prefer his backstory from the novel, his naming of Quasimodo done not explicitly out of cruelty, etc.). As far as the Epic Chorus, I can see that they put it into the end of the Entr’acte, but I feel that it spoils the revelation of this song, and I feel that that number would work best as a curtain call song(though I reasonably see how straining it would be on the choir, so I wouldn’t push it as much). Again, I’m fine with either this version or the American version, provided that it is the last song before the Finale since it makes more thematic sense, but I’ll also admit that I too love this version! Frederick Lycke sounds AMAZING here as Phoebus(My favorite actor for this character, just from this whole cast recording!!!), especially at 2:49 with the chorus, and I’ll never get tired of replaying 3:24 over and over again!!!! :) God, since he’s now a genuine Broadway actor now(thanks to Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812), I would die happily hearing an English version of this version of this song with Josh Groban as Phoebus(not sure who’d I personally pick for Esmeralda, but Ciara Renee of the American production is a keeper!)!

I dunno. I think the book for the American version got caught in the framing device/play within a play fad that Peter and the Starcatcher popularized and then Catch Me If you Can and This and Leap of Faith all did to diminishing returns. The Berlin script by James Lapine was a solid show that would have been great for American audiences to experience.

I think it’s a little much. Plus in this scene it’s just Esmeralda and Phoebus in Jail. So a big chorus isn’t really needed. It changes the mood. They have it for the someday reprise at the end of the finale.

English Lyrics [ESMERALDA] I used to believe In the days I was naive That I live to see A day of justice dawn And though I will die Long before that morning comes I'll die while believing still, It will come when I am gone. Someday when we are wiser When the world's older When we have learned I pray someday we may yet live To live and let live. [ESMERALDA (PHOEBUS)] Someday life will be fairer. (Someday life will be fairer) Need will be rarer. (Need will be rarer) Greed will not pay.(Greed will not pay.) Godspeed, this bright millennium (Godspeed this bright millennium) On its way [BOTH] Let it come someday [CHORUS: ROMANIES, VILLAGERS, And CLOPIN] Someday when we are wiser When the world's older When we have learned I pray someday we may yet live To live and let live [ESMERALDA] There are some days black and bitter. There are days we haven't got a prayer [PHOEBUS] But the prayer for something better [BOTH] Is the one thing we all share [CHORUS] We all share We all share [COMPANY] We all share! [PHOEBUS and CHORUS(ESMERALDA) Someday our fight will be won then(Someday our fight will be won then) We'll stand in the sun then That bright afternoon(That bright afternoon) [COMPANY] 'Till then(Till then) on days when the sun is gone Hope lives on Wish upon the moon Change will come [PHOEBUS] One day [COMPANY] Someday [ESMERALDA] Soon
