Eric, I know about six months ago. A lady had a complaint in her Lincoln that her volume controls would intermittently work in her steering wheel. I had the vehicle for two days and could not duplicate the problem. I started out using the ultra Autel. Then ended up using the Ford IDS. It never set a code or any history at all. I would use live data and move the steering wheel up down and around town and could not get it to fail. Long story short after almost giving up, especially considering, it was an intermittent problem that I could not reproduce. I got it to finally do it then of course it wouldn’t do it again for some. Without boring you with the hours, I had into it. It turns out there was a hairline break at the clock spring. What I ended up doing was physically moving the wires at the clock spring pretty aggressively to a certain degree. I’ve seen a lot of clock springs go bad over the years. And yes, it is true. You can have a clock spring still work most of the functions, i.e. this case. But one little tiny wire was just barely making contact. I felt bad for the customer so I did not charge her for all the time I had into it. Because at the end of the day, the clock spring was only just under $200.00. It was just one of those cases that was not cut and dry. I wanted to tear my hair out lol. Your friend always Ron

I've been there too many times tearing vehicles down to determine exactly what's wrong and then you don't get the job to repair or replace so then your putting things all back together free of charge to the customer and it's not the best way to do business and make money. I worked at a Ford dealer for 11 years and so many times I would put back together a vehicle that was rejected for the repair and by the time I put it back in the parking lot, customer has called back and change their mind to perform the repair which is just so annoying. Make up your mind people! 😂

For the switches... I think it's like 6 screws to disassemble the steering wheel and pop those switches out. I'd pop them out and hose them all down with some CRC electronics cleaner first and see. For a DIYer, probably not even disassemble it first since those switches are an enclosed module tucked behind the front steering wheel trim plastic.

Just thought I'd mention a little trick I learned that sometimes comes in handy when working under the hood on those tall trucks, pull the valve stem cores out of the front wheel valve stems to flatten the front tires, that will drop the front end down several inches (depending on tire sidewall height) and will allow easier access to engine, then when you're done you just air the tires back up.

When we bought our home in 2000 the previous owners were both heavy smokers who smoked inside the house. At the time I really did not take that into consideration when we bought the house. We should have. It took a couple of years to really get the house cleaned out. There was yellow slime everywhere. It was even behind the thermostat and the wires were coated with brownish yellow goo. We had to have our HVAC ducts cleaned out as they were also full of it. In general it made a real mess of the house.

What's worse is that the stuff is mildly conductive, and would settle in circuit boards and cause all kinds of havoc. I did a lot of cleaning with denatured alcohol to get rid of it, tossed a lot of very brown paper towels.

Years back I repaired VCRs that were contaminated by nicotine. With switches, I would try to get alcohol inside. I would activate the switch, sometimes feeling a reduction in stickiness. Sometimes I would hold cotton at the switch toggle and attempt to drain the alcohol. This usually worked but requires that the switches be at certain angles. It may be impractical in this situation. A quality contact cleaner may be more effective. Nicotine is nasty. 🖖🏻🍀

Just stumbled across this vid……I thought! n I could be wrong 😮. That when you bought a Dodge’r or mop’r from the dealer…….it came new with the “check engine light” as standard equipment! 😊. 😂.

LIN is normally a single wire protocol (so power, ground & comms), the multi wires & voltages suggests that its a resistive ladder, possibly multiple.

Good video as always Eric O i am Sensible with my diag I do a hour of diag and if its obvious like Tar and Nicotine gooo i would do the same thing not out a ton of time in it and Suspect the switch i tend to do a few things for free when vehicles are already in for diag i would of done the same thing on the filler neck free of charge if the code matures again then diag should be done 33:30 @South Main Auto Repair LLC

I'm a minute into this and I'm predicting a clock spring problem. Horn circuit voltage shorted to cruise set circuit pulls TPS voltage to over 5 volts causing WOT downshift...

I did the same. I'd diagnose but if the part was cheaper than the diag fee or tearing into something I'd talk with the customer and the majority of time they would go with my suggestion and thank me for trying to save them $$.

Great job again. I would have you fix the mouse damage and let the rest ride until I have def failure.

My approach is. it depends on the customer's way of acting... been in the game for many years and there are some rats at times :-) is there a smell of a rat, does it look like a rat's nest hmm maybe I think 50/50 but is it worth it invest time in before the customer is informed. time costs a lot, and we who have the knowledge and the solution must also be paid, but not cheat the customer. Erik, you seem like a super trustworthy person. if you are sometimes in doubt, ask Miss O :-) greetings from Dk

I wonder if there's a cleaner that would work on the switches without causing more problems. I'd give isopropyl alcohol a shot if it were my truck. Another great video Mr O, thanks.

That's great you said at least that guy's not cutting his grass, but I was cutting my grass with my ear buds in listening to this so some one was cutting the grass lol

I just got the same borescope under a different brand name. I want to inspect my cylinders to help diagnose stage 1(carcarenut)oil consumption on long trips. I've only had time to examine one cylinder and it was good, strong cross hatch, valves clean though there is carbon on the piston top. Compression was exactly even across cylinders and exactly at spec. I'm working on that I can do it part.

CRC Electronics Cleaner is good for cleaning residue in auto switches. Dealer detailer _drenched_ center console with cleaner/protector and most of the switches were gunky and stuck.

I had to clean my moms car after she passed. She was a smoker. It took me hours to just clean the steering wheel. The layer of tar on everything was shocking!!

Saw you do a perfect waft move under the hood of that Ram !!! 🦦❤️😎

Those cruise control switches were super common. When I was working for ram, I was changing one of them every other week. Also those MDS solenoids, they don't like coming out. Think of it like an ABS sensor. Also, the SCCM is in the clock spring. Cause why not chrysler, why not.

When it uses a resistor to encode each button on the same wire, pressing 2 at once definitely has the possibility of making it look like an entirely different button, so if one is stuck down and you press another, I could see it interpreting something completely different.

I have a 2011 Ram. Both the steering wheel controls for the radio went from no issues whatsoever to both not working the same day (volume might work if you hammered on it over and over but only the odd push). My truck was owned also by a smoker before I bought it. I went ahead and replaced both at the same time myself - problem solved and never an issue since. Probably the same problem.

Eric needs to put his prices up, with some of the other rates quoted it would definitely be worth driving in from other states just to be guaranteed a great diag technician. I know i would.
