I can tell by how you are able to explain everything in an undersable way. I think you are doing an amazing job working on videos and repairing vehicles at he same time!

You can have the patience of a saint while doing this kind of work but have zero patience in actually dealing with the vehicles owner or Mr John Q & Mrs Karen Public in general. I am a lot like that, I don't want to deal with humans(most dogs are ok tho😁). I can take apart something very tedious and figure out the problem and reassemble it after fixing it. I just hate dealing with many of the whiny Karen's & Ken's out there in the public. When I was a crew chief in the Air Force, smoking in the aircraft was allowed. When they banned smoking, the aircraft started flying better. All the tar in the smoke settled on the electronics, causing them to overheat. The outflow valves on the pressurization system, would literally glue themselves shut, causing issues. We also now had an easier time cleaning the interiors. M

Eric, I know about six months ago. A lady had a complaint in her Lincoln that her volume controls would intermittently work in her steering wheel. I had the vehicle for two days and could not duplicate the problem. I started out using the ultra Autel. Then ended up using the Ford IDS. It never set a code or any history at all. I would use live data and move the steering wheel up down and around town and could not get it to fail. Long story short after almost giving up, especially considering, it was an intermittent problem that I could not reproduce. I got it to finally do it then of course it wouldn’t do it again for some. Without boring you with the hours, I had into it. It turns out there was a hairline break at the clock spring. What I ended up doing was physically moving the wires at the clock spring pretty aggressively to a certain degree. I’ve seen a lot of clock springs go bad over the years. And yes, it is true. You can have a clock spring still work most of the functions, i.e. this case. But one little tiny wire was just barely making contact. I felt bad for the customer so I did not charge her for all the time I had into it. Because at the end of the day, the clock spring was only just under $200.00. It was just one of those cases that was not cut and dry. I wanted to tear my hair out lol. Your friend always Ron

He is located in Avoca New York think Arkansas in the northeast. There are cows all and woods all around him and the nearest big city is two hours away. The people that live in his area couldn't really afford much more an hour. He has a business to run and without customers he has no business. God bless him that he is able to keep the doors open and charge a rate that keeps his lights on and serves the people of his community. There have been several videos where the customers have been unable to afford the needed repair, and Eric does his best to mend the car instead of slap new parts on it.

The cost of everything has basically doubled over the last 4 years and it's not going to revert now that they know they can get away with it. Eric is worth double what he charges, he knows it, as a mechanic I know it too. However his customers can't afford dealer rates and at the end of the day, Eric has a heart bigger than Texas.. I own some houses I rent out. I have never had an HVAC service call for the heat pump not result in recommendation to replace the whole heat pump system. True they are usually 10 years old and maybe the cheapest long term remedy is to replace whole unit. But at $10,000 it is like replacing a car when the AC goes bad. Wish there was an Eric for heat pumps in my area. Evidently there are no HVAC technicians around that can do surgical repairs.

Just thought I'd mention a little trick I learned that sometimes comes in handy when working under the hood on those tall trucks, pull the valve stem cores out of the front wheel valve stems to flatten the front tires, that will drop the front end down several inches (depending on tire sidewall height) and will allow easier access to engine, then when you're done you just air the tires back up.

For the switches... I think it's like 6 screws to disassemble the steering wheel and pop those switches out. I'd pop them out and hose them all down with some CRC electronics cleaner first and see. For a DIYer, probably not even disassemble it first since those switches are an enclosed module tucked behind the front steering wheel trim plastic.

Might need to do more digging Eric. I had an 08 jeep hemi that had a converter code that tripped the CEL. The cruise control, eco button and remote start stopped working, mds too. Long story short, after spending $1,000 with mechanics who basically told me I was stupid for wanting to change the pcv valve for a lean condition that was causing the code, I put in a new pcv valve on my own, drove a mile down the road, heard a ding, the cel turned off, and everything started working again. Apparently Chrysler doesn’t want that stuff working with the cel on. That was in the Altel factory manual at the time, probably still is. Fix the cel.

When we bought our home in 2000 the previous owners were both heavy smokers who smoked inside the house. At the time I really did not take that into consideration when we bought the house. We should have. It took a couple of years to really get the house cleaned out. There was yellow slime everywhere. It was even behind the thermostat and the wires were coated with brownish yellow goo. We had to have our HVAC ducts cleaned out as they were also full of it. In general it made a real mess of the house.

I've been there too many times tearing vehicles down to determine exactly what's wrong and then you don't get the job to repair or replace so then your putting things all back together free of charge to the customer and it's not the best way to do business and make money. I worked at a Ford dealer for 11 years and so many times I would put back together a vehicle that was rejected for the repair and by the time I put it back in the parking lot, customer has called back and change their mind to perform the repair which is just so annoying. did computer repair for 34 years before retiring, and can't count on the fingers of both hands, toes of both feet, and even dropping my drawers for one more count, the number of times I saw cigarette smoke gum up switches, keyboards, cooling fans, etc. so badly that the systems would malfunction. What's worse is that the stuff is mildly conductive, and would settle in circuit boards and cause all kinds of havoc. I did a lot of cleaning with denatured alcohol to get rid of it, tossed a lot of very brown paper towels.

Years back I repaired VCRs that were contaminated by nicotine. With switches, I would try to get alcohol inside. I would activate the switch, sometimes feeling a reduction in stickiness. Sometimes I would hold cotton at the switch toggle and attempt to drain the alcohol. This usually worked but requires that the switches be at certain angles. It may be impractical in this situation. A quality contact cleaner may be more effective. Nicotine is nasty. 🖖🏻🍀

I would much rather a smoker car than a mold car, a cat car, or a food car! It's only Tuesday, I've already had three Rodent Write-Offs, and now here you are with more mouse-y goodness! GEE THANKS ERIC! LOL The nice thing about those switch packs in the steering wheel, it's an easy diag. If some of the buttons work, all the encoding is done internally and sent over the same wire pair through the clockspring to the SCCM, so you know the wiring is good from A-C, switch pack is kapoot.

So the varying voltage from the cruise/gear select switch is called analog multiplexing. Each switch is assigned a voltage were independent switch activation will yield the specific voltage and combinations of switches will yield a voltage unique to that combination. With 6 switches there are 2 raised to the sixth power or 32 combinations although some may be invalid like cruise on and cruise off which may be mechanically impossible to achieve and would result in a plausibility error if detected by the controller.

LIN is normally a single wire protocol (so power, ground & comms), the multi wires & voltages suggests that its a resistive ladder, possibly multiple.

26:29. While the voltages are correct, there's a noticeable "ramp" going from the open voltage to the correct mode. That's likely to create some issues if it's traveling though any other mode getting from A to B.

When it uses a resistor to encode each button on the same wire, pressing 2 at once definitely has the possibility of making it look like an entirely different button, so if one is stuck down and you press another, I could see it interpreting something completely different.

oh, when checking steering wheel buttons and scope data, beside just turning it back and forth, bang around on the outer rim of the wheel with a closed fist(or cloth wrapped rubber mallet) to add hard vibration to the whole column and dash. I have found quit a few bad plug connections that way, even some under hood/far away from the supposed problem area. heck, even have someone else push the button, watch the scope and bang all over the vehicle (within reason).

Even if the sticking steering wheel controls aren't immediately obvious as THE PROBLEM, they obviously are A PROBLEM. Sticking buttons would probably be more likely than a clock spring or a module since you can actually feel that they are sticking. I wouldn't even consider replacing the controls as a "parts cannon" firing...I'd actually consider it as part of the diagnostic procedure at this point. I'd estimate that there is a 95% chance they are the problem...which I'm sure you've already discovered.

I did some work on a 2017 Ram with a V6. Had been sitting for a while. The entire engine bay was covered with mouse droppings. Battery blanket was soaked with urine and battery tray also had pools of urine. Thought for sure the wiring was going to be trash. After drying things out, installing a new battery and cleaning the battery terminals i got the truck started. Amazingly there were no issues and no codes. Only issue was I smelled like mouse piss for a while. Owner was lucky.

Those cruise control switches were super common. When I was working for ram, I was changing one of them every other week. Also those MDS solenoids, they don't like coming out. Think of it like an ABS sensor. Also, the SCCM is in the clock spring. Cause why not chrysler, why not.

The other thing to consider... with multiplexed things like those buttons, if it was a clockspring issue, more would be non-functional. Seems like an impedance issue in the buttons to me.

I worked on a GM cruise control that would occasionally choose to accelerate out of control unless you held your foot on the brake pedal or until the cruise switch was turned off. The switch had been replaced by the stealership to no avail. Turned out that the customer would adjust the tilt wheel all the way up and down every time he entered or exited the car, flexing the wiring harness in the column until the insulation failed on some of the wires causing them to short together.

Nicotine stains are the worst. When I was a wee lad and in mobile television repair, customer complaint was a yellow screen. As an 18 year old I started my diagnoses before I got there. This older lady smoked, chain smoked! Her TV had a film of nicotine residue on it. It took isopropyl alcohol to clean the screen. I cleaned the old tuner, volume, tint, bright, contrast and focus controls. Her rug was sticky and her whole house was musty! She was happy! I needed a shower! I did smoke but mostly chewed tobacco back then.

My approach is. it depends on the customer's way of acting... been in the game for many years and there are some rats at times :-) is there a smell of a rat, does it look like a rat's nest hmm maybe I think 50/50 but is it worth it invest time in before the customer is informed. time costs a lot, and we who have the knowledge and the solution must also be paid, but not cheat the customer. Erik, you seem like a super trustworthy person. if you are sometimes in doubt, ask Miss O :-) greetings from Dk

I have a 2011 Ram. Both the steering wheel controls for the radio went from no issues whatsoever to both not working the same day (volume might work if you hammered on it over and over but only the odd push). My truck was owned also by a smoker before I bought it. I went ahead and replaced both at the same time myself - problem solved and never an issue since. Probably the same problem.

Recently, I was at a shop to have them check for a cylinder misfire in my 2017 F250 with the 6.2L gas... They also had to do a vehicle inspection for my state, which of course failed due to the misfire. After finding a bad plug boot in cyl 4 COP, they recommended I replace all the boots and the wires for the secondary plugs, but the techs advised I buy a set aftermarket to save some cash. Paid for the diag and the inspection, ordered the kit, and returned a week later. The vehicle then passed the inspection (yay) and I was waiting for them to install the new boot kit for me. About that time, the service advisor came over to me and told me it was going to be over $450 for them to install the new boot kit. As you can imagine, lasers came out my eyes, fire came from my lips, and I even think I peed a little as I questioned why the cost was so dang to install the parts they recommended I purchase separately, and had on hand... When the tech had zero explanation for charging me so much to install the boots, they immediately lost me as a customer. At 60 YO, I can still do some work myself, and even if I didn't want to, I know I can have it done at a reasonable cost somewhere else who isn't so greedy. The moral of the story is that being greedy can mean you won't be making anything at all when it's recognized by someone. To me, a reasonable charge would have been $100-$200 to replace all the boots and the wires (there are 16 of them anyway), but $500 is just a bit much. I would have gladly paid for the work if reasonable, but I lost faith in the shop (NOT the tech, but the SHOP) when that happened.

some things take more time than you would expect to do, or its flat rate charges where book time says 3hrs, they bill 3hrs. 3hrs at 150/hr is 450, that could be entirely possible what happened there. nothing is cheap anymore. if you'd rather DIY than pay someone else, skip the dealership and just DIY. you can basically buy a new set of good tools for the price of most dealerships these days, so if you think you can handle it, go for it. but dont be surprised when things arent cheap, that's just life
