Your phrases "It gets the job done" and "it fills bellies" run through the back of my mind, frequently. I appreciate these self kindness mantras - it helps remind me, as a home cooking mom, I don't have to do things perfectly. Thank you!

The "things perfectly" reminded me of how my 8 year old son said yesterday at dinner "dad, mom made stew, it's brown and there's lots of it". I died. It was a good stew but maybe not pretty haha. I agree with you 100%.

I was just watching a video of yours from the 2022 pantry challenge, and I was reminded about the "ugly food" issue. Homemade meals aren't ugly. Being resourceful isn't ugly. Providing your children with a happy, loving, and safe home isn't ugly. Not wasting food isn't ugly. Modelling respectful treatment of livestock isn't ugly. Thank you for _choosing_ to share your life with us.

Jessica, you are a wonderful mother. You are hands on and a teacher. When I see your children sitting at the table ready to eat, it shows the time you have put into your children. Your 2 year old, sits at the table like a 15 year old, waiting for his meal, knows how to handle silverware, knows how to eat with table manners. I have seen many 2-5 years olds that don't do this. All parents are not teaching manners these days.

I’m an older person and I wish I had know how to stick up before. I started stocking when I ran my childcare, preschool business because we had to do earthquake preparedness. When we retired and moved I brought my long term pantry with us. This is the first time we’re doing the Pantry Challenge!! So excited to do it. I planned meals for 3 months. We support local farmers and get a Farm Box twice a month so that keeps us in fruits and veggies as well as 1/2 dozen eggs that supplement. We got the smallest box since there’s only 2 of us. Also decided my husband can buy his milk and cottage cheese twice a month and maybe some bananas. That made him happy. Figured out we will be saving tons of money because every time he went to the store he would buy junk food, chips, cookies, etc. I save all the receipts so I know exactly what he spends 😂. Only spent $100 on all the things I don’t have to make all our recipes for 3 months. Will update on how it went!!!

Growing up in Minnesota with a hot dish Mom you learn that the crazier the dish looks usually the better it tastes, lol. I see your children know the same. I'm in awe of your homesteading skills how they all come together for an efficient homestead. These are skills most children today don't learn. I had my granddaughter ask me how I plan my purchases so I don't run out. I gave her a simple example; toilet paper. Dated the outside of the main package, recorded the finish date and the saved start date which gives you a frequency for how often to budget for. I had to chuckle how amazed she was! It was like a lightbulb went off. It's sad our schools don't prepare our children better with budgeting skills. It's creating a society dependent on credit which when the bottom falls out creates a disaster. I firmly believe your way of raising your children is a wonderful solution to this. Brava! Hannah is suck a cutie!

Everything you cook looks so yummy! We are enjoying our spin on the pantry (freezer for us) challenge. Even my husband is starting to participate by helping with meal planning week 2. We have to eat at least 1 thing from the freezer every day and no buying new freezer items. We saved money this week because we didn’t even eat out one single meal.
@deborahlawing27282 жыл бұрын
I too try to eat out of the freezer regularly but sometimes I make a concentrated effort to keep using out of the freezer and like you, not put anything back in. One can really make a dent if you are focused. I even run across some small prepared meals that I've forgotten about. One was a dish of chili and another was the last bit of roast and veggies from a crock pot meal. It's nice to warm something up and poof, supper is served.
@homegrownharvest2112 жыл бұрын
That’s broadly what I’m doing too but due to inflation I’m using some money to buy things that I know are getting more expensive in a couple of weeks to replace it in the freezer. (Largely fish). It’s crazy food inflation at 12% in the uk.

Here at Our Strowler Project, we are preparing to move a 150 miles to our new property at the end of the month. We have been eating down our stores for a year in preparation for this move. So I'm participating by giving ideas when people say they don't know what to do with X. All of our jars are palletized, 3 of them. We have less than 2 dozen still in use. When we get to the new property, we start prepping beds and getting our chickens back. Once we know our fences are good, it's time to fetch all of our breeding stock from around the state. I have a partially paralyzed GI system, many allergies and intolerances, some of my household has similar issues and other are predominantly plant based. So we cook from scratch a lot.
