Every spring we had a big event for Explorer Scouts (older, co-ed kids) called "Almost" Anything Goes. My senior advisor and I would do a black powder shooting expo as groups of 20-30 kids rotated in during the day. After talking about the guns and demonstrations on loading and shooting any kid who wanted to was offered the opportunity to shoot (we loaded). Usually half the group would opt to give it a go. By the end of the day my palm was SO bruised from seating and loading a few hundred rounds. I miss those days!💕

I bought a CVA muzzle loader back when my mom worked at the mail order center for Gander Mountain in Wisconsin at thier outlet store about 1990. I spent a lot of money there. They had such a wonderful gunsmithing staff. Anyway I bought a .58 Cal kit and put it together and made it all pretty and learned about muzzleloader rifles. I didn't want to blow my head up like you seeing Looney Tunes. I really enjoyed it. That's when the first Trapdoor came into my collection. Now the black powder bug has a bit on me still after 30 years. My dad did a lot of black powder but didn't tell me so I could learn on my own. He loved to do that to me. Put the bug in me and let me learn how to fine tune it. I even taught him a thing or two but he would never tell me but I could see him change the way he would do things to the way I would in little things. Especially when reloading ammunition. I think he wanted me to know more then him by learning and experience. He sure was proud when I would place higher in rankings durring compititions.

That's a beautiful piece. If I was to get a rifled musket it would be the one I would get. I prefer the rifled muskets with the musket caps to the regular percussion long guns. I tend to prefer military guns in general. I do love to shoot in october. It has always been my favorite month for target shooting. With a gun like that plastic surgical tubing connected to the nipple with the other end in a sturdy jug of hot water with a drum cleaning jag on a cleaning rod and a wet patch being thrust up and down the bore to pump the water from the jug thru the tube and nipple works good to flush the soot from the breach before holding the barrel with a cloth and pouring boiling hot water down the bore and having it drain out the nipple after removing the tube and then swabbing the bore with dry patches until they come out clean works well for cleaning because they don't have a hooked breach

Hickock 45, I enjoyed your two videos showing the shooting of your 1841 (1850) Eli Whitney Mississippi rifle in original 54 caliber. I too am the proud owner of one of these old beauties. The long story of how I acquired this magnificent old girl is interesting within itself but I won’t bore you with those details at this point. It came wrapped in brown paper and had some very light rust on the barrel and the bore looked like it was clogged with dirt and rust. I carefully disassembled the rifle and when I closely examined the lock mechanism I made a startling discovery. Several of the mating (friction) parts of the trigger / sear were blued BUT not even slightly scratched. Being young and foolish, I decided I wanted to shoot the old girl. I plugged the nipple and filled the barrel with Hopes #9. After running a bore brush and many patches I discovered Just dried up grease & dirt but not a hint of rust. Reflecting a light off the breach plug revealed a mirror bright set of rifling. Again, long story short, over a period of five years I fired the rifle about a hundred times. In many ways I’m glad I did … but in others I should have preserved her in what I believe now was an unfired state. The only exterior evidence of firing now is very slightly charring of the wood of the stock just below the nipple from the musket caps & powder ignition. Prior to my firing her that wood was unblemished. As my grandfather taught me over 75 years ago, I used boiling-soapy water to clean up after shooting black powder. I would like to hear your description of proper cleanup procedures. I’ve studied various suggested methods but would like to benefit from your experience. Larry

19:53 Yep, you can still shoot Civil War or Revolutionary War muzzleloaders today if they have been stored and maintained properly. The only things that can make one dangerous to shoot are rust, and a cracked stock. Rust pits that have eaten into the barrel diameter can cause a thin, weak spot that may rupture during firing. Often times the exposed barrel metal will look fine, but the barrel that's sitting down inside the stock wood may have deep rust pits growing deeper every year. If the gun was fired in the past and never cleaned properly, the rust pits may be in the bore working their way outside instead, and they are just as dangerous. Removing the stock for cleaning, inspecting, and lubricating old rifles is a must when maintaining shooter antiques. Cracked stocks are the other danger. Wood shrinks and warps over time if not stored correctly. If you notice a crack, do not shoot it anymore. Get it to a gunsmith like Mark Novak who can make it safe again with a beautiful repair that blends in perfectly. Shooting light or mild loads will be gentle to the 100+ year old wood. You can shoot the old girls with 50 or 60 grains just as you can with 100 or 120 grains of powder. Take care to not soak the stock in gun oil. When you smear the whole barrel and lock with a heavy layer of oil, it drips down over time as the gun sits muzzle-up in the gun safe, and the tang gets soaked in oil and very weak. Eventually it becomes so soft that the barrel smashes it under recoil and splits it wide open. The gun does not know it's as old as it is. It's just metal and wood. If you take care of it, it'll shoot just as good as it did the day it was made.

Nothing quite satisfies like plinking solid steel with a rifle on a crisp fall day. I was just out this week in 40 degree late winter weather in the sand pit where I shoot with mud and slushy snow all over the place shooting a solid stainless steel 7 inch wide circular pot bottom from 20 to 25 yards away with my Diana model 34 classic .22 air rifle shooting my 16 grain H&N hornet pellets and I hit it all 5 times I fired the piece within a 4 inch center mass group using open sights with 3 shots hitting the bullseye and each time I shot the piece I heard the nice ringing sound because I hit it and the pellet flattened up so much but definitely left clear marks on the solid steel so I knew where all I hit it

I know it is brass but just sayin.......Those barrels are kinda soft at best. Ballistol is a bit stinky but good stuff for muzzle loader cleanup and care. How much does the 1850 weigh? I know you don't hunt but I'll bet it would make a good deer gun in the muzzleloader season. As far as your health losing some weight is good at any age just don't get carried away and I can sympathize with you on dental problems. At 61 I had a complete overhaul back in Aug. of last year. Very painful and even more expensive. Mine fell prey to peridontal disease so go to your dentist regularly! Believe me catching those problems early can make a difference.
